Teacher 'Petrified' After Being Attacked By Student (Baltimore)
Today Show ^ | 4/10/2008 | Mike Celizic

Posted on 04/10/2008 11:46:16 AM PDT by Pyro7480

Six days after she was sucker punched and beaten in her own Baltimore classroom, high school art teacher Jolita Berry still finds it almost impossible to watch the MySpace video of the attack. And she can’t make herself go back to work....

The attack happened last Friday morning in Berry’s classroom in Reginald F. Lewis High School in Baltimore. One of the girls in the class approached the 30-year-old teacher and got nose-to-nose with her and threatened her.

...The video, recorded on a cell phone by another student, picks up with Berry on the floor trying to defend herself while the girl straddles her, throwing punches at Berry’s head. The teacher said some of the other students cheered on the attacker....

One student did call for help. After the attack, Berry said the school principal, Jean Ragin, suggested that she provoked the attack.

“On one hand, she told me she is sorry this happened to me,” Berry said in a taped report filed by NBC’s Savannah Guthrie. “She told me telling the student that I would defend myself was a ‘trigger word.’ ”

...Lewis High was put on probation by Maryland school authorities last year for the high number of violent incidents reported there....

The school is one of several schools created in 2002 when the city broke up Northern High School, a large institution beset by violence and problems. W.E.B. DuBois High School, which was created at the same time as Lewis High, is already labeled persistently dangerous.

“They know that there are no consequences for their behavior, so they are pretty much running the school,” English told NBC News.

Berry agreed with English. “There are no consequences,” she said. “The students do whatever they want because they know nothing’s going to happen to them.”

close the school, put up a prison sign in front of it and re-open as a youth authority.. with armed guards.. on the perimeter,, and then let the students cheer each other on,, as they whack each other one at a time..

is that something like “dissin’”???

worthy of killing someone over.

Ah yes, all cultures are equal, the students are victims of their socio-economic conditions, etc.

Thanks, libs, for totally destroying the culture of America - may you burn in hell for it.

I have yet to be challenged on this statement.

Don't stare at the predator, it takes that at a threat and challenge to its dominance. Keep your head down and avoid eye contact at all costs and if attacked, roll into a ball and protect your head and vital organs.

OR

‘trigger word.’

My trigger would have been me knocking her on her arse when she got in my face and touched me.

Funny how stuff like this happens to people who cannot/will not defend themselves instead of to a person who could take on the entire class.

“Consequences” are anathema to liberals.

The core of “liberalism” is to force those who make good decisions pay for (ie, remove) the consequences of those who make bad decisions.

One little trick to get them to hit you first but on your terms so you can catch it is when they are that close just reach your foot out and lay it on theirs. Their reaction is to push you which you are prepared for so then let the attitude adjustment begin since they hit you first.

Let me get this straight. Student hauls off and hits the teacher, has her on the ground pummeling her and the principal blames the teacher saying “if you only didn't provoke little Suzi Sl*t none if this would have happened”.

My oh my we live in insane times. The convicts are running the insane asylum.

Trigger word? Trigger word?

This is the same liberal BS that blames us for terrorism. To them, terrorism is caused by resisting it. I'm begining to agree that liberalism is a mental disorder. On the one hand, they want everyone to be a victim. On the other, they blame the victim. The world has gone mad.

The problem is, in this day and age, if the teacher even raised her hand to block a punch and the 'poor little child' (sic) who struck at her got a bruise, the teacher would be arrested and her career ended forever. I've seen it happen before.

At the high school level, these kids are way beyond being controlled by the “board of education”. If a teacher or principal whacks their hineys, their gangbanging pals will ambush the teacher/principal away from school grounds to teach the whacker a lesson.

My Dad told me that when he was in High school they still had it. He said they had a “Dean of Girls” and a “Dean of Boys” who gave it out. They did not have this when I was in school. If you were this bad when I was in school they sent you home, and quite frankly the other students at my school were glad to be rid of you. I went to a good high school that had excellent teachers and students that really excelled.

now days....it is the dumps.

I think we need the “Dean of Girls” and Dean of Boys” again and introduce the “board of education” in the schools in the lower grades so they know to expected it!!!!

Two questions come to mind immediately:

1. Why is the perpetrator not in prison for assault and battery?

2. How much would you bet that the teacher is a Democrat and will continue to vote Democrat?

South Park did a show on teaching in the jungle last night.

Cartmen taught the animals to cheat to win.

They also had a refence to abortion as the ultimate cheat. I think the whole show was geared around making this statement.

Well, when the first kid swung, I blocked, stepping in with hand to his throat. Pinned him to the wall. He gave up pretty quickly.

2nd. time, kid thought he was a wrestler, dove at my legs. I went down on top with one hand to back of neck and other hand to crotch. Picked him off ground wrapped up like a little ball, head and neck under one arm, legs in the other, with his ass sticking up in the air. Needless to say, he was pretty embarassed. I was “Mr.” from then on. LOL.

P.S. It helps that I’m 6-5, @225.

Found this:

“Teach students how to avoid over-reacting to trigger words and phrases. Triggers are words or phrases that have such an emotional connotation that after hearing them, the student quits listening for a few moments or a sustained period of time. When a student hears a trigger word, his or her attention is redirected to the consequences implied by that word. This brief interruption in the listening process often causes some of the most critical parts of the teachers message to be lost. Avoiding the usage of such trigger words, and encouraging the disadvantaged learner to listen to the complete message are key to the development of good listening and improved teacher-student communication.”
