Original Formula Schlitz Coming Back to Chicago!!
Beer (& More) In Food ^ | 4-5-2008 | Bob Skilnik

I can’t wait! This is the beer I was raised on, long before certain people at Schlitz got greedy, leading to Schlitz beer becoming known as “Schitz” beer.

The downfall of Schlitz, combined with a bottler’s strike at Anheuser-Busch in 1976 allowed Old Style, a sleeper brand that had been in Chicago since the early 1900s, to take over the Chicagoland beer market. OS distributors took their battle for supremacy to neighborhood taverns, bottle by bottle and case by case until the brand dominated more than 40% of the local beer market.

The problems of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Company were brought upon themselves and a board of directors that refused to acknowledge their production mistakes, the sudden death of CEO Bob Uihlein, Jr., and no real leader to take over the business when Bob died, a leader who could handle the meddlesome Uihleins.

The old veteran has-been of a pitcher was reluctantly put into a game after his team's bull pen had been depleted. Milt was drunk on Schlitz. He walked the batter in, bags loaded (and so was Milt), and the opposing team won.

When the opposing coach was asked what the key to the game was, he said "Schlitz; it was the beer that made Milt Famey walk us.

Tell it to expect “Just a kiss of the hops.”

“Hey, will they also bring back the Malt Liquor Bull?”

Back in the day, I loved the little cans in 8-packs with my favorite herbal smoke on the side, and it wasn’t hops.

“With a declining market share in Chicago hovering around twenty percent, Heileman hired Jerry Della Femina who was considered a bit of an innovative maverick in the advertising business.

With his agency headquartered in Manhattan in New York, Della Femina, however, seemed to be somewhat out of touch with Chicago, its history and perhaps its demographics.

At the 1990 All-Star baseball game held at the Chicago Cub’s Wrigley Field, at the time with its outfield walls covered in summer ivy splendor, the ad executive, who was seated in the park’s Old Style hospitality suite, turned and commented to a group of fellow executives. ‘Isn’t Comiskey Park wonderful?’ he said, referring to the American League park on the South Side of Chicago.”

Nothing like knowing your target audience.

“Their portfolio of once proud regional brands are now brewed by Miller.”

I was excited until I read that. When was the original formula around?

I seems lots of the swill beers of the olden days have been bought out or closed. Blitz beer that was brewed by Blitz Winehard in Portland, OR, was alaways good. Papst Blue Ribbon somehow survived and is thriving. The youngsters love it as much as I do. I never drank allot of Schlitz though.

“When was the original formula around?”

Around the early to mid 1970s. Long story about how Schlitz management screwed up the formula, tried to revise it with more cheapness, and then watched as it was sold to Stroh after the feds stopped G. Heileman from buying Schlitz.
