I think I'd had let FDIC or BankAmerica's insurance take that hit.

I don't think I would have felt that bad. ...maybe I would?

The rewared was less than 2%.

They should have given him 10 percent," Estrada's mother told the Times.

Then mooch off of your actor nephew Eric then lady. Not the insurance company. Geesh!

“Don’t know if things are any different than about 40 years ago, but ...”

Indeed, this is far more normal than some posters would like to believe.

In cases where large amounts of drug cash are being confiscated, who could not believe some of that cash never makes it to the evidence room in some cases. Faced with XXXXXXX dollars, time after time, and knowing the government is about to steal it anyway (or, in lesser amounts, your sergeant, or the LT or the guy next to you), after a while even the most morally upstanding person is going to be in serious danger of a fall.

I would have been $140,000 richer, having kept 100% as a reward.

I take it that the bank knew there was $140k in the bag to start with (and not $160k, or $180k, or...)?

Can you imagine if they didn't?

"So, how much was delivered, according to the other bank?

"They said $160,00."

"Why are they complaining? How much were we supposed to deliver?

"I dunno? $250,000 or $300,000 or $400,000. Who care. So, you wanna order Chinese for lunch?"

It would be tough spending that $140,000 without raising suspicion. You certainly couldn’t deposit it in the bank and even paying cash for big ticket items could get you a visit from the police or IRS. However, you could spend it a little at a time and probably not get noticed.

I once returned $140 to a bank after the teller at the drive through window sent it to me in error. I did not notice until I was down the street a little ways, so I even had to drive back to the bank to do the good deed.

It does feel good to simply do the right thing. Now, If I were to find $140 THOUSAND in small bills in a bank bag..... no witnesses.......well, I'll just say that would be quite the test, wouldn't it?

Yeah, I must admit, it would be awfully tempting to keep that money for myself. Hats off to the guy, and I feel bad for him that they didn’t give him a better tip. Much less than what he got would have been plain insulting. Had it been about a thousand or less, I think I honestly would have told them where they could put their “reward.” I would honestly feel better to receive no reward at all than a tiny one. There was a local story late last year where a woman returned $65,000 that had fallen off a truck and got a bigger reward than this guy, plus she got a free stay at Disney to top it all off! Now I’m not saying that a reward should be mandatory or even expected, but I do think that you should either reward the person with a decent percentage, or not at all. It’s better to be left with nothing but the feeling of knowing you did the right thing, than it is to be left with the feeling that your reward was given for public image purposes rather than gratitude.

I’m guessing that Brinks would be on the hook for it since it was in their custody, not BOA.

Same sort of deal. I gave the teller 200 to deposit. She gave me my receipt and the 200 back. I gave her the 200 the second time and told her she owes me a date.

Never got the date, but I got a smile.

Monetary rewards are SOOOO not-the-point of such an action.

Live it up first.

You can’t put it in the bank. If you show up with more than couple of hundred, they are calling FBI.

You can’t spend it all in one place. Go around. Stay in bunny ranch for a week! Don’t drop more than couple of K in any one place.
