Three House members have charged Federal Aviation Administration officials with presenting "misleading" testimony about airline maintenance.

Representative James Oberstar of Minnesota and two other Democratic colleagues sent a letter to FAA officials.

The lawmakers questioned inconsistencies about the FAA officials' testimony last week about how regulators would implement a 2004 customer service initiative.

According to the letter, the new rules were to be delivered, discussed and documented within 60 days of a February memorandum. But the FAA officials testified that the process could occur "during routine visits over the next year."

A spokesman for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee said no decision has been made on what further steps the committee will take. An FAA spokeswoman disputed the letter's claims and said all three officials testified truthfully.

This Congressman has almost single handedly grounded much of many airlines fleet of MD-80 aircraft. The US has the BEST SAFETY RECORD of any country in the world in regards to air travel. The harm this moron is doing to the economy, not to mention the inconvenience he is putting HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of passengers through this week is unconscionable. Call, write, or fax his office and tell him and the other Dems on his transportation cmtte. to get their heads out of their A@@es and stop trying to grandstand for the cameras. The airlines are in dire straights again, and actions like his are only likely to make things worse, not better.

Is this customer service initiative related to the inspection of wiring in the wheel wells this week?

“The lawmakers questioned inconsistencies about the FAA officials’ testimony last week about how regulators would implement a 2004 customer service initiative.”

Where have these ‘lawmakers’ been since 2004?

Or wasn’t this important to them, until reelection time?

Yes, this Congressman is intimidating the FAA into requiring way more inspection than necessary to certify the palnes. In Milwaukee, Midwest Airlines cancelled flights because even though their planes were inspected and found to be fine, they flew them back to Milwaukee to have their own mechanics RE-INSPECT them just to make sure. When the FAA is under pressure from idiots in Congress, their natural inclination is to go way beyond what is necessary.

And the FAA can go way beyond what is necessary all on their own, thank you very much...
