Four prisoners executed in Japan

Four death row prisoners have been executed in Japan, the authorities have announced.

The four inmates, aged between 41 and 64, were hanged at separate locations in Japan, the justice ministry said.

Japan, one of the few industrialised countries to retain the death penalty, appears to be stepping up the pace of prisoner executions.

Three capital sentences were carried out in February, as well as nine executions in 2007.

Human rights groups are critical of the secrecy surrounding executions in Japan.

Relatives are told only after the hangings have taken place and, until December 2007, the names of those executed were not publicly announced.

But justice ministry officials and opinion polls suggest that there is considerable support for the death penalty among the Japanese public.

Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama played down talk of an acceleration in executions.

"I have not paid any attention to the interval (since February's executions)," he told reporters.

"As justice minister, I am simply carrying out the demands of the law."

Recent victims of media/academic indoctrination are often amazed to learn that Japan has the death penalty, since they are usually told that the US is the ONLY industrialized that still engages in this practice.

The lib activist definition of "industrialized" is also conveniently contrived to exclude China, which carried out an estimated 3400 executions last year.

The death penalty in Japan is carried out in a peculiar way. As I understand it, the condemned are not told the date of their execution. A prisoner might spend weeks, months, or years on death row waiting, not knowing when he will die until the very day he does.

Japanese "hanging" is different from most methods. The drop is only 18". It is death by strangulation. The condemned don't know when the execution will take place until they are lead from their cells.

I think thats correct PUGACHEV, Ill have to ask some one but I think that is pretty much how they do it here. I think the executions are by hanging.

In addition, regular prisoners don’t have access to TV or anything elsse, except as a “gift”. They are also required to spend some time each day at a writing desk reflecting on why what they did was wrong. Prisoners have no “rights” in the sense we have here.

Huh I didn’t think Japan had a death penalty, I’m happy to see that I was wrong. Yet another reason for me to marry a Japanese girl and move to anime heaven.
