Athletes who take Tibet stand 'face Olympic cut'
Times Online ^ | April 11, 2008 | Ashling O’Connor

Athletes who display Tibetan flags at Olympic venues — including in their own rooms — could be expelled from this summer’s Games in Beijing under anti-propaganda rules.

Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said that competitors were free to express their political views but faced sanctions if they indulged in propaganda.

He accompanied those comments with an admission that the Games were in “crisis” after pro-Tibet protests engulfed the Olympic torch relay.

Mr Rogge’s call for Beijing to abide by its promise to address human rights was given short shrift by Beijing, which bluntly told him to keep politics out of the Games.

I hope and, yes, pray that the Beijing Olympics melt down into a political and social disaster for the tyrannical CCP regime.

May they sweat and suffer the whole summer long.

So, what if China hosted the Olympics and no one came?

I presume that propaganda in this context means anything the Chi-Coms don't like.

If no one came, there would still be no good air to breathe in Beijing.

Ok, then lets just end the games forever and no one will need to be bothered. It will save tax payers tons of money.

Rogge is an unprincipled, anti-freedom, self-hating Westerner who is constantly on the lookout for ways to kowtow to totalitarians — the more brutal, the better.

This policy is obscene, and Rogge knows it. He’s enforcing the Butchers of Beijing’s totalitarianism for them to protect the poor babies’ sensitivities. Well, it’s time someone took a stand.

We should boycott the Beijing Olympics and bar Chinese goods from our country. If I were President, when the Beijing Olympics are opening (without Americans), I’d be visiting Taipei. From there, I’d go visit Daramsala.

And we should step up the arming of Taiwan. Support Free China and strengthen it as much as possible.

What I would really like to see at this Olympics is for a bunch of the atheletes with no hope of winning a medal (e.g. folks like Eddie the Eagle Edwards, the Jamaican bobsled team, and the “Agony of Defeat” guy from ABC Wide World of Sports) to unfurl Tibetan flags at the opening ceremonies. They could get some attention for themselves and pi$$ off the Chi-Coms. And if enough of them do it, they’ll be pretty well insulated from reprisals.

No need for a flag. Right before the opening ceremony, an entire national team should shave their heads (in solidarity with persecuted Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns; competitors in events such as gymnastics which are graded on style may opt out). When asked about it they should act naive and say nothing political — simply “streamlining” or “It’s just terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be doing it in the future.”

I’d bet you money the IOC sat around and thought to themselves, “We don’t want any photos. No lasting images to mar these games. That would be the worst thing.” Like, the man in front of the tank at Tiananmen. But they know they can’t very well stifle people from having and voicing opinions, not that it would work if they tried.

So they are trying to say, yes, athletes may voice their opinions, but “propaganda” will be defined as anything “protesty.” They know full well few will stand around interviewing athletes for sound bites, but the world will instantly respond to big images of protest.

If my kid was headed to these games, I’d seriously consider yanking them for their (and my) own safety. I’m totally serious.

I agree. And here I disagree with the boycott crowd. I think the more attention slathered on the Olympics, the greater the venue becomes and the blacker the black eye. I would include even the President's visit to open the Games.

The red Chinese really don't know how to handle this. They're blowing it, as of course they must. The Torch Run so far is turning into a globe-trotting game of "keep-away". It's freakin' hysterical.

I do pray though, that there isn't a reprise of Munich in any way, shape or form. Apparently there's a west-China muslim extremist group that is a huge problem over there, and they'll find the Games to be an irresistable target. That would be bad.

I agree. What gaggle of dopes even considered holding the games in China? Forget Tibet. The pollution, their restrictions on behavior, their "rules" and their "forbidding" of normal visitors' activity should have never allowed them on the list of venues.

I hope this flops bigtime. It will be fun to see these clowns "lose face" with the whole world watching.

The Olympic Games have become a complete joke. The unspoken threat here is that saying anything could be determined to be propaganda thus resulting in the loss of a medal.

No opportunity for corrupt manipulation of who wins there. /s

I think that the US media will portray the Olympics in exactly any way that the Chinese demand that they do. They will probably invite Chinese sensors into the control booths.

The color guards (commentators) will probably have thier own blue suit teams as they provide coverage.

I wonder if people will be allowed to bring Bibles with them.

I pretty much agree with that. While I would enjoy seeing this mess blow up in their lost faces, I don't mean that literally.

On the other hand, if the angry mooselimbs from their western provinces do manage to pull a Munich, the Chinese might give us a useful lesson on effective ways of dealing with uppity and troublesome mooselimbs.

Actually, what we should do is to have a “Freedom Games”, and have them in Athens.

Let’s see which country shows up to which.

They should all be held in Athens. Forget the greedy sports promoters who award venues based on who comes up with the most money, resulting in the current hopeless mess.

It started in Athens, it should stay there.

It should be about the athletes, not about a vulgar Disneyland spectacle.
