Obama defends comments about bitterness in small towns
The Chicago Tribune ^ | April 11, 2008 | John McCormick

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Sen. Barack Obama was criticized Friday by his two fellow presidential candidates for statements he made recently at a San Francisco fundraiser that could be viewed as derogatory toward rural America.

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said Sunday, according to the Huffington Post web site.

"And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not," Obama reportedly continued. "It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Obama does not allow reporters into fundraisers held at private residences, so they were not reported at the time.

The comments could fuel suggestions that Obama can be arrogant. They began circulating on the Internet Friday and drew rapid responses from both Sen. Hillary Clinton, his rival for the Democratic nomination, and Sen. John McCain, the likely Republican nominee.

"It's a remarkable statement and extremely revealing," McCain adviser Steve Schmidt said in a statement. "It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking, it is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans."

Clinton, campaigning in Pennsylvania, also suggested Obama sounded like an elitist.

Whenever someone is rude by cutting in line—or any of that type of thing—I loudly use Socratic irony in exclaiming with obviously-faked shock, “Oh, dear! Sometimes I forget that some people are better than others!”

It loses something in the translation; but it can be effective.

They don’t represent the best or brightest.

But anytime a black man or woman rises and espouses CONSERVATIVE politics and beliefs, he or she is called a race traitor, an Uncle Tom, a house-n******, et al and pictured in the most hateful stereotypical images.

Barack is not a uniter. He is a bigot. He is a disgraceful man and unfit for the presidency.

Okay..let’s look at his words here:

“cling to guns”...he says this in a state that takes school off for the first day of deer hunting season!

“antipathy to people who aren’t like them”...in otherwords, they’re racists

“anti-immigrant”...see above

“anti-trade”...this is the biggest joke! Look what the Democrats did by stopping the trade deal with Columbia. Every paper in the nation said it was a horrible mistake and will COST American jobs!

Well done, Barry

Obama's Brittany moment?

I wonder what ole Barak thinks of thsoe large segments of the population in Oakland and Philadelphia who are clinging to quite a few guns, as well. You don't ever hear him talking about them. Perhaps they're just not white enough...

Obama reportedly continued. "It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Obama, you don't know jack shit about small towns in the midwest.

I know small towns. I've lived in small towns. I don't want your kind of help. I don't want your bullshit. All I want is for you politicians to do your job and then leave us the hell alone.

Obama also has said he wants to prohibit the importation of toys from China.

I wonder if Obama will stop digging his hole by the time he gets to China.

Now, in a few day this will be out of the news, because that’s how the MSM thinks, too.

If we’re lucky, Michele will bring it up again, in an effort to defend her husband.

It is eye opening to see that he thinks of small town America as soomehow being natural preserves for americas “not too bright” relatives. Gun totin, bible thumpin, xenophobes, who are somehow clueless...

In other words, "typical white people". Like his grandmother...

It won’t destroy his campaign. His followers will focus on the cleaned-up version (just read the ‘official transcript’ aka the cleaned-up version on a Dem site) and somehow always manage to turn it around to “So what? It’s the truth.”

Ugh.

Just how liberals think about life outside the big cities where they congregate. As far they're concerned, Flyover Country doesn't exist.

Just like NAFTA - a focal point in Ohio for the primary, yet without NAFTA Ohio would not be in a very good position (think Honda). They want NAFTA completely destroyed and they have no idea what comes or goes because of it.

Don’t know why but when I see this pic of Britney I think of Sigourney Weaver in “Aliens”: “GET AWAY FROM HER YOU B1TCH!”

His “people who are different from them” stuff is more then likely concerning homosexuals.

Funny thing is, in the small towns I’ve lived in, most folks just leave them alone and go about their business.

Che Obama is a walking stereotype encyclopedia, it’s fascinating, almost like Obama really has taken Wright’s message to heart and that is how he views the world.
