A model of 14 was banned from the catwalk in Australia yesterday amid continuing controversy over the sexualisation of young girls in the fashion industry.
A photo-shoot of Monika Jagaciak by Australian Vogue was also called off after the editor said she had not realised the Polish teenager's age.
Organisers of Australian Fashion week in Sydney banned all under-16s from the catwalk after furious public debate over the use of youngsters in an industry already under fire over anorexia and drug use.
It follows a similar decision ahead of London Fashion Week last September and brings the Australian event into line with shows in other leading cities.
Last night, British fashion designer Jeff Banks backed the Australian decision. "Even at 16, I think girls are too young unless they have got a chaperone with them," he said.
"But there is no doubt about it - at the age of just 14, they are too young."

Good rule, especially when kids are in with adult women. The whole fashion industry is run by degenerates. If they don't like it who cares?
At least she is dressed well. I see less dressed pigs in the local mall probably her mother’s age.

I haven’t bought so much as a blouse from Calvin Klein since I saw the ads some years ago with very young girls in jeans showing the crack of their butts.

On the other hand, given that the fashion world tends to be dominated by the Nancy-Boys-R-US crowd, I am unsure how those things would be a threat to a female.

Having ranted, I do have to say that ‘thinging’ (sorry for that bit of LiberalSpeak) a female as a sex object at an early age does cause some deleterious effects on top models. Been there, seen it up close.
At 14, she’s probably too old. Most fashion is designed for gawky skinny adolescents.

I see no harm in teenagers modeling couture as long as they are chaperoned, well-fed, and the clothing is decent.

I would agree as long as the girls aren't asked to pose in a suggestive way.
Of course, I think the whole high fashion world is silly and wasteful. But if a young woman can participate without putting her education or character in jeopardy, then I think she should have that chance.
