Showdown: the state that may seal Hillary's fate (Pennsylvania)
The Guardian ^ | April 13 2008 | Paul Harris

Posted on 04/13/2008 4:08:52 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

No one tells Pat Beaman that Hillary Clinton cannot win the Democratic nomination to be the next President of America. As she volunteered her help at a Clinton campaign event last week, she responded furiously to the very idea.

'It is ridiculous to suggest she should quit!' Beaman said. 'It was not that long ago that we always chose the candidates at the convention and not before,' she added, as she shepherded in supporters who had come to see former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright hold a rally for Senator Clinton in the rusting Pennsylvania steel town of Bethlehem.

Beaman was right. Throughout most of American political history presidential candidates have been chosen at raucous party conventions of wheeler-dealing and backroom deals. But America's political memory is short, and Clinton's audacious bid to take her fight with Barack Obama all the way to Denver in August is now threatening to tear their party apart.

Pennsylvania is now the next do-or-die battle in that grim fight. The state goes to the polls on 22 April and for Clinton it is a must-win. If she loses in Pennsylvania, the pressure on her to quit the race will be virtually impossible to resist. 'This is a make-or-break state for her. She has to win,' said Seth Masket, a University of Denver political scientist and former official in Bill Clinton's White House. Pennsylvania is certainly friendly territory, dotted with mostly white, former industrial towns such as Bethlehem, where the factories are shut and the jobs have long gone overseas.

For Senator Obama this is tougher turf. He is popular in the big cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with their large black populations, but in this battle he is very much the underdog.

I guess this was actually written before smalltowngate or the British don't think Obama's remarks in San Francisco will hurt in Pennsylvania. They couldn't be more mistaken, IMO. Pennsylvanians, tell us your opinions.

Albright was speaking to a group of students and locals in Bethlehem and touting Clinton's credentials to be the next President. She spoke of Clinton's long experience, her feminist credentials and her warm personality.

Albright just seems to get stupider with age, if that's possible. Hillary's warm personality? And since when are feminist credentials a prequisite for the office of the President. And other than barely escaping alive from the sniper fire in Bosnia, what experience does Hillary have?

Given that Albright is on record as saying that she believed Clinton never had a dalliance with Monica, how much dumber can she get and still remember to breathe?

I didn't even know she was running for that. I wonder if she want's to be pres of both South, Central and North America?

Obama’s recent crank-stepping

Can you explain the term "crank-stepping"?

I've never heard it, and Google hasn't either.

Just wondering where it comes from.

Something is being kept very quiet...It's the Puerto Rico vote...There are a lot of delegates and it could tip the scale to Hillary.

That's why Bubba was there...Ya know...

and I think Hillary was supposed to judge a beauty contest. Cough, cough...Right up her alley!!

This is a prejudiced state. Someone came up to a friend of mine the other day and said they would vote for a gorilla ahead of Obama. It can be shocking,' Beaman said.

Does this idiot Beaman know what prejudiced means?

Isn't it possible, just barely possible, that someone could look at O'bama and judge him by his words, and his actions, and decide they don't like him?

THAT IS NOT PREJUDICE, FOLKS!

Did Bill ever pardon any terrorists being held for using violence in support of the independence of Pennsylvania? If not, it will be his fault if Hillary doesn’t do as well in Pennsylvania as in Puerto Rico.

Wow, you're right.

June 1 - SIXTY-THREE delegates - more than 24 states!

Apparently Clinton has a big advantage there.

She's got to win in Pa. though - keep hope alive!

Let them fight, this is like the Mordor Orcs fighting the Isengard Orcs...McCain is the simple Hobbit....

I can only imagine how much money Obama is spending, I would think that he wants to win PA very very badly, it would end the nomination race, and he could focus on Mad John and us small town simpletons who need Che Obama to represent our simple selves..../s

Personally I think he not only stepped on it but slammed a heavy door on it with his stupid, racist remarks. If I were a democrat (purely for demonstration purposes, I assure you!!!!) and lived in a small town I would wash my hands of that jackass after what he said. In fact I might be so pissed off I might very well cross the line and vote for McCain.

“stepping on one’s crank” means not smart enough to avoid doing something stupid or really clumsy, like stepping on one’s own male anatomy, which hurts, I can tell you.

Why does PR get so many delegates?

I asked that same question; but I have no answer yet.

Given that they cannot vote for President in November, why do they have any at all?

Here is a PDF explaining how they're "outreaching" to LGBTs but not to blacks, but it doesn't explain why.

Only 20 delegates go to the RNC. Already decided; all for McCain.

More info.

I Hate going to WaPo but I looked at the link. I have the same question. They “can’t participate in the general election” but they “might determine this election” (per Bubba)

WHY does Puerto Rico have any delegates at all??????? Can anyone answer?

Not in this case, Mad John is the beneficiary of the fight between the two Dhimmis, he is weathered like a stump.

but then again, he never mocked us small town folks either.

Don’t foget, on the Left Coast and the Eastern Corridor (Balt, NYC, Philthadelphia, NYC, Boston) what Che said are their views on small towns and our people.

There is naught that an oak can do but weather the storm or crack my FRiend.

How can he be the underdog? Philly and Pittsburgh are where all the Dem votes are in PA and they are predominantly Black.

Spent a little time at the polls this morning. If our polling place is any indication of a statewide trend (and it generally isn’t), Hillary is going to do very well in Pennsylvania today.

As you know, we live in a heavily-Republican rural area of south-central Pennsylvania. I spoke with maybe two dozen voters this morning. About a third of them had switched registration to democrat for this primary alone, and every one of those switcers (with the exception of one who did not divulge her vote) voted for Hillary. As I had suspected, it would appear that the majority of Pennsylvania republicans who switched their registration to democrat for this primary (reportedly in excess of 100,000 voters) did so in order to vote for Hillary Clinton -- or, better said, in order to vote against Barack Obama.

That is not to say that Hillary will win the Pennsylvania primary by the enormous margin needed to continue to consider her a viable candidate, but she certainly is receiving support (from republicans) in this area. Of course, voting tendencies in any part of the ‘Pennsylvania T’ are quite often cancelled out by the Philadelphia -- and, to a lesser degree, Pittsburgh -- area vote, where support for Obama is extremely strong. When dead people, canaries and people whose registration address is a vacant lot are allowed to vote, it’s difficult to overcome such nebulous political ‘support’.

A friend who is attending a local (although in another, more liberal, county) campus of Penn State stopped in for a visit last night and stayed until the wee hours of the morning. He reports that the large majority of students on his campus are Obama supporters. The popularity of this anti-American ‘leader’ on college campuses today unpleasantly transports me back to the sixties, when young self-proclaimed ‘rebels’ would vote for anyone promising ‘change’ – knowing little about what that ‘change’ would entail.

Never thought I’d be hoping for a decisive win for Hillary Clinton. Just goes to prove the wisdom of the adage 'Never say never ... '

P.S. I voted for Ron Paul this morning. I despise his isolationist/pacifist ideology, but could not in good conscience vote for John McCain or Mike Huckabee. Considered writing in my (deceased) Dad’s name, but I heard his voice whispering to me, 'Joanie, leave me out of this debacle.' :)

Best to you, FRiend ...

~ joanie
