Nepal Maoists head for victory

HARDLINE Maoists led by guerilla commander Prachanda - "the fierce one" - were heading for a stunning victory in Nepal's elections last night, sealing the fate of the Himalayan nation's 300-year-old Hindu monarchy and the widely reviled King Gyanendra. Officials in India, which has traditionally wielded overwhelming influence over Nepal, were reported to be "gulping in barely concealed shock" over a result that seems likely to see a new Maoist government tie the small but strategically important country more closely to Beijing. International strategists believe the election result will lead to a significant extension of Chinese influence in a region where Beijing is now competing strongly against New Delhi.

Before the vote, most projections put the Maoists third behind the traditional political groups of the long-dominant Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist). In results announced so far, the Maoists have bagged 25 of the 40 seats declared, and are leading substantially in 70 of the 122 electorates where counting is in progress.

When you bring in Jimmy Carter to "monitor" your elections, you can pretty much guarantee that the communists are going to win.

The idiocy of the people electing Klintoon after the end of the cold war reminds me of the contempt the British showed by tossing out Churchill at the end of WW2.Klintoon traded away and squandered the opportunity to build a post soviet, anti-communist policy. Not that he had it in him mind you.It now seems to me that there are MORE marxist regimes than ever.
Not that having that little monkey in Venezuela stronger than ever getting a free pass in the last few years, along with Super China( and Nuclear Iran), doesn’t give me pause about the current administration.

Course it doesn’t help when a highly respected royal family gets itself wiped out by one of its own and succession passes to a git with about as much charm as Robert Mugabe. I can’t say I’m surprised at the Maoist win, given his mishandling of the nation.

Course that doesn’t mean I endorse the Maoists victory - or the tactics I suspect they’ll take to make sure they never lose power. Buit hell, the King was the biggest vote-getter the MAoists had!
