The independent label sticks to John McCain because he antagonizes fellow Republicans and likes to work with Democrats.
But a different label applies to his actual record: conservative.
The likely Republican presidential nominee is much more conservative than voters appear to realize. McCain leans to the right on issue after issue, not just on the Iraq war but also on abortion, gay rights, gun control and other issues that matter to his party's social conservatives.
The four-term Arizona senator, a longtime member of the Armed Services Committee, criticized the earlier handling of the war but has been a crucial ally in President Bush's effort to increase and maintain U.S. forces in Iraq.
Besides the war, McCain agrees broadly with Bush and other conservatives on:
Abortion. McCain promises to appoint judges who, in the mold of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia......
Gay rights. McCain opposes gay marriage. True, he does not support a federal ban on gay marriage on grounds the issue traditionally has been decided by states. But McCain worked to ban gay marriage in Arizona.....
Gun control. McCain voted against a ban on assault-style weapons and for shielding gun-makers and dealers from civil suits.....
Nearly a third of Clinton supporters said they would back McCain if Obama becomes the Democratic nominee, and more than a quarter of Obama supporters said they would back McCain over Clinton......

I love John McCain.
I love John McCain
Disinformation campaign begins at APee.
I am really worried that he may ask Rudy Giuliani to be his running mate.
Is there a missing “Barf Alert” here?
I was just going to ask the same question ;)
Scrappleface?
Is that you......chuckle.
And pigs have wings so they can fly South for the winter.
Why, er, no! Of course not! Here, have a sip of this delicious grape kool-ade! It'll make you feel better!
Nice post.
All the McCain bashing really is getting a bit tiresome.
He’s the nominee.
Could be worse. Let’s get him elected now.
Funny stuff. The MSM just spent 8 years building McCain up as a moderate, an independent... THE MAVERICK.... and now... oh he’s more conservative than you realize. What THEY don’t realize is they are helping his campaign with this type of story. I’m sure it’s not their intent... unless some are actually getting cold feet about the Arrogant Messiah? Nah, couldn’t be. ;-)
I love John McCain
Keep telling yourself that.
It might even help if you do decide to pull the lever for JM.
John McCain has a partial conservative record. About the first 15 years of his public government service, he was a conservative.
The last 10 years of his public government service, he was, and is, a CINO, if even that.
I have no doubt that John McCain actually believes that we need to reach across the aisle to the Democrats more often and with more vigor.
I just don't happen to agree with him on this.
John McCain may end up being the next POTUS. If that happens, it's my belief that the Republican party is doomed to be socialism lite.
FWIW, Lieberman said on Hanity, Thur or Fri last week, that he would not accept McCain's VP spot.
FWIW.
McCain’s best spokesman is Obama. Judges may make me vote for him, the border won’t let me give money.
Name a more Liberal Republican candiate we've had for President.
They have medication for that.
McCain’s stubborn march to the GOP nomination says volumes about his character and tenacity.
And for all the FR squawking - where is the alternative, perfect Conservative hero? We didn’t find one and he didn’t find us.
McCain or Obama or Clinton?
I’ll take the Maverick - he reminds me of Harry T.
If Lieberman is out there denying it, then I'm not so far off base in thinking it could happen, eh? ((((scary))))
Could you expand on that?
I'm still looking for a reason to vote FOR McCain.
ROTFLOL
The longer and harder I look at this guy, he just reminds me more of John McCain.
It just never gets any better.
I have posted numerous reasons why Jaun McAmnesty is the wrong man for he nomination... I am tired of repeating myself. If people want to be sucked in and stop thinking for themselves so be it.
If he gets elected this country is screwed. Same goes for Barrak Hussien Obama and queen Hitlery.
So basically we are screwed.
I am tired of voting for the lesser of 2 evils. Its still voting for evil.
The source for this article is AP.
The same folks that have been bashing this country for decades... and you want to believe them....
So you go ahead and do as you want. No one has forced you to “conform” thats a crock. If you want to vote for him do so.... Just do me a favor and keep your LOVEFEST for JM to yourself.
Exactly, these McCain haters would rather have a Muslim Marxist and his Stalinist wife in the WH !
Bush and other conservatives - ROTFL.
gee, what changed....hmmmmmm.... maybe there's some dirt in his FBI files or something in the Keating 5 files that really made him become "more enlightened" and "moderate".
This whole election is a joke. we've basically got 3 democrat candidates. I could care less who gets the job. the key is to make sure that the congress can block the disasters that these asshats are going to foist on the American people.
I think it may be easier to fight a democrat president, rather than a marble mouthed, squishy, RINO that has dirt in his background and a strange ability to help out liberal democrats.
If I was sure we could get a filibuster minority in the Senate and a congress that could block the democrat bills, then I'd hope the democrats win the white house and run their tricycle into the ditch.
They can't help over-reaching when they're in power. i can take two years of their cr#p. With a Republican in the white house and advocating for legislation on "global warming" (puke) and giving tax breaks to the people that deserve it the most (everybody that makes under 50k)... we're screwed either way.
The only thing about this campaign that interests me now is how funny Obama is b#tch-slapping Hillary.
Oh and if you think McCain is going to run rings around Obama, just sit back and objectively listen to both men speak. McCain sounds like a retard with marbles in his mouth and a weird Mr. Burns tone to his voice.
Obamalamadingdong....not so much.
yeah, me too.... he reminds me of a democrat running for president.
Give it a rest ! Your PHONY COMPARISON IS A PHONY RANT that is TIRED and ridiculous when you see what the Dem party has become /> McCain is NOT a radical Marxist who hates whites, America, the military and a George Soros front man. He is NOT pro abortion , pro partial birth abortion, fairness doctrine ,socialized medicine and radical wealth redistribution ! Do you want to let a radical Soro’s Dem party destroy this country !
I'm serious when I say....it wouldn't surprise me...if he picked Hillary as his V.P.
Good post.............
So, why not just get a room? Blackbird.
McCain’s to the right of Obama, therefore he’s an “ultraconservative” as far as the media is concerned.
One wasn't necessary until your quote above.
To which I say BARF!
How can you be trusted? I have posted some bad things about McCain too.
What happens to you if you do that? Did they reprogram you?
On the contrary, it is a target rich environment for McCain skeptics.
Nah, I just enjoy making fun of McCainiacs!

I've got a better idea: Why don't YOU go back to McCain's campaign headquarters and cash your paycheck!
I am not the fool helping to promote a radical Muslim Marxist for President.
No, you're the fool helping to promote an clinically unstable, mentally challenged RINO. But hey, have fun with that!
The McCain bashing here is really getting tiresome. It’s childish and embarrassing. The fact that these people can’t see that a McCain Presidency is far preferable to an Obama or Clinton one is ridiculous.
LOL! You're the one with the multiple exclamation points and ALL CAPS rants! I'm having fun! But that's because it's so easy with McCainiacs - they tend to emulate the emotional stability of their mentor.
Just the fact that McCain *may* keep the Bush tax cuts is more than enough reason for me to vote for him.
My family will lose thousands of dollars every year for the next 4 years if either Democract wins, both of whom have promised to rescind the tax cuts.
I told my liberal friend this—her family income is nearly identical to mine—and she was so surprised by how much she too benefits financially from the Bush tax cuts. “Really?” she asked, wonderingly. She hates Bush, of course. Guess she thought only the “rich” benefit from his tax cuts.
Go McCain! Can’t wait for debates between John and Billary/and or NoBamma. The Dim implosions are a hoot to watch!
Who would you have in mind? Chaffee, maybe? Or maybe the other turncoat from NE that changed parties and gave control of the Senate to the Democrats before McCain could?
“Bush and other conservatives”
I didn’t bother reading the rest.
