The independent label sticks to John McCain because he antagonizes fellow Republicans and likes to work with Democrats.
But a different label applies to his actual record: conservative.
The likely Republican presidential nominee is much more conservative than voters appear to realize. McCain leans to the right on issue after issue, not just on the Iraq war but also on abortion, gay rights, gun control and other issues that matter to his party's social conservatives.
The four-term Arizona senator, a longtime member of the Armed Services Committee, criticized the earlier handling of the war but has been a crucial ally in President Bush's effort to increase and maintain U.S. forces in Iraq.
Besides the war, McCain agrees broadly with Bush and other conservatives on:
Abortion. McCain promises to appoint judges who, in the mold of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia......
Gay rights. McCain opposes gay marriage. True, he does not support a federal ban on gay marriage on grounds the issue traditionally has been decided by states. But McCain worked to ban gay marriage in Arizona.....
Gun control. McCain voted against a ban on assault-style weapons and for shielding gun-makers and dealers from civil suits.....
Nearly a third of Clinton supporters said they would back McCain if Obama becomes the Democratic nominee, and more than a quarter of Obama supporters said they would back McCain over Clinton......

I've got a better idea: Why don't YOU go back to McCain's campaign headquarters and cash your paycheck!
I am not the fool helping to promote a radical Muslim Marxist for President.
No, you're the fool helping to promote an clinically unstable, mentally challenged RINO. But hey, have fun with that!
The McCain bashing here is really getting tiresome. It’s childish and embarrassing. The fact that these people can’t see that a McCain Presidency is far preferable to an Obama or Clinton one is ridiculous.
LOL! You're the one with the multiple exclamation points and ALL CAPS rants! I'm having fun! But that's because it's so easy with McCainiacs - they tend to emulate the emotional stability of their mentor.
Just the fact that McCain *may* keep the Bush tax cuts is more than enough reason for me to vote for him.
My family will lose thousands of dollars every year for the next 4 years if either Democract wins, both of whom have promised to rescind the tax cuts.
I told my liberal friend this—her family income is nearly identical to mine—and she was so surprised by how much she too benefits financially from the Bush tax cuts. “Really?” she asked, wonderingly. She hates Bush, of course. Guess she thought only the “rich” benefit from his tax cuts.
Go McCain! Can’t wait for debates between John and Billary/and or NoBamma. The Dim implosions are a hoot to watch!
Who would you have in mind? Chaffee, maybe? Or maybe the other turncoat from NE that changed parties and gave control of the Senate to the Democrats before McCain could?
“Bush and other conservatives”
I didn’t bother reading the rest.
Why do I think of Julia Roberts every time this hysterical twit’s picture is posted?
Want to back that up with some proof...that he isn't Soros' back-up, the same as Hillary is, just in case the Soros crowd doesn't get their first choice. Why would we want to let "Soros' Democrat party destroy this country?" Because better they do it than the Republican party. That's why.
Are you going to tell Jim Robinson to “report back to DU”?
Don't ask, don't tell.
Why don't you two get a room?
Not a good idea to get off yer meds this early in the day...
Don't tell me what McCain is NOT.
Tell me what he IS.
Give me a reason to vote FOR him not against the other guy.
I also have several questions about some of the things you think he is not.
Not pro radical wealth redistribution?
THAT'S why he supported the tax cuts - not.
Not pro fairness?
THAT"s why he didn't support McCain/Fiengold - oops, he DID support that, huh?
There are other things that make me trust him no farther than I can throw him right now.
McCain does have a very decent voting record. The problem is, when McCain opens his mouth on issues, it is usually media-pandering left-wing crap. Except the war on terror and government waste, McCain never even pays lip-service to other conservative views.
....you keep telling yourself that.
don't hate the player...... hate the game.
Scratching head. I hope you just forgot to put an end sarcasm tag at the end of your post. There's nothing remotely likable about McCain, much less lovable.
McCain wasn’t my first choice either. I would have preferred Fred Thompson. However with McCain at least he will appoint originalist judges to the Supreme Court. He is right now the only hope we have to get a Conservative Supreme Court. Obama on the other hand will appoint a socialist to the Supreme Court.
I find McCain’s stance on illegal immigration to be appaling. However he would still be better on that issue than Obama. Hopefully he’ll live up to his word (though I somehow doubt it) that he’ll secure the border before he even considers amnesty.
