Rival US companies Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines have agreed to merge in a $5bn deal that would create the world's biggest carrier.

The directors of the two companies agreed the stock-swap deal on Monday.

The combined airline, which will be called Delta, will have an annual revenue of more than $35bn and employ more than 75,000 staff.

The merger could trigger similar moves by other US carriers struggling with rising oil prices, correspondents say.

And rumors of a United/Continental merger to follow, creating an even bigger airline. One analyst says we’re watching the major airlines go out of business before our eyes.

Leaving Herb Kelleher laughing all the way to the bank.

SWA is going to continue to eat these guys’ lunch in domestic flights.

Might as well - they already have a close partnership - you can book a flight with Delta and then find yourself on a Northwest plane anyway.

Southwest doesn't compete in major markets. SWA is the best airline that goes where you don't.

LOL. I didn’t say it was a good thing, just a big thing..... marriage of a hippo and a rhino — how do they mate?

Hm, SWA seems to serve all the major US cities... maybe not at the central airports for those, but all the major cities.

I fly SWA for business and it gets me close enough.

And it beats sitting on the tarmac for 4 hours at DFW watching the gate personnel from 30 feet away. Said personnel sitting around doing nothing. AA has done that to me a few too many times.

Every day the stock market is open is a good day to short an airline.

With these two prize-winning companies merging, it will be a wonderful day to short the result the day they list their new ticker.

We’ve already seen majors go, Pan Am, Twa , Eastern , National , Braniff. The first two historic beyond belief.
Don’t forget the manufacturers McDonald Douglas ,Lockheed
and Convair.

"wow, this is a mega-merger"

This onceagain uis an attempt to combine two "wrongs" into one "right".

If they can't sort out pay and retirement issues and collect surcharges for their fuel costs, they will winfd up in a bigger bankruptcy.

I believe the new stock ticker symbol will be DELA - as in DELAYED flight.

Delta has always stood for:

D - Delay
E - Everybody's
L - Luggage
T - Through
A - Atlanta

They've always been very good at loosing luggage they delay, too. Delta has bought my lost luggage at least 4 times in the past 20 years. I did get pieces of one Delsey bag back from them about 6 months after they lost it, though.....
