BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Tuesday demanded that television news channel CNN apologize after one of its commentators said the Chinese were "goons" and that their products were "junk."
Jack Cafferty made the comments earlier this month on CNN's political program, The Situation Room.
"We are shocked at and strongly condemn the evil attack by the CNN anchor on the Chinese people," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular news conference.
"Cafferty used the microphone in his hand to slander China and the Chinese people, and seriously violated reporting ethics."
Cafferty said the United States imported Chinese-made "junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food," adding: "They're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years," according to a copy of his comments carried on YouTube.
China came under international scrutiny following a series of food and product health scares last year. It says the vast majority of its products are safe and has accused Western media of over-hyping the problem.
"We solemnly demand that CNN and Cafferty retract their evil words and apologize to the whole Chinese people," Jiang added.
CNN's Hong Kong bureau, one of its main reporting bases in Asia, said it had no immediate comment.
China has lashed out at Western media organizations, including CNN in recent weeks following unrest in Tibet, accusing them of running distorted reports, siding with pro-Tibet independence groups and of demonizing China.
“”Cafferty used the microphone in his hand to slander China and the Chinese people, and seriously violated reporting ethics.””
Newsflash, we have no reporting ethics here in the U.S.
was that “goon”, he said, or that other G word?
Wow, something that I agree with Cafferty on.... Let’s expand the dialog on the quality of Chicom manufacturing and concern for the environment. :)
The truth hurts, doesn’t it China. Goons & junk seem right to me.
Jack was sh*tfaced again.
“CNN apologize after one of its commentators said the Chinese were “goons” and that their products were “junk.”
Someone at CNN said something true for once.
I’ll have to watch it again sometime.
Eric, That has to be the only explanation.
He must have been hammered, since this is the only time that crank has ever said anything I could agree on!
Doesn’t Cafferty know who his bosses are? CNN stands for the Communist News Network. Cafferty by the way is a big Obama supporter and Barry is as Marxist a guy who has got this far in a major party. Comrade Cafferty needs to sober up and go to a re-education camp.
Why should CNN fire Cafferty?
For once, he is right. The ChiComs are goons and bigots of the worst kind.

As you think about that, recall that in ancient times, the Romans and others would catapult disease-riddled corpses over the walls of cities they besieged to sicken and kill the enemy. The Chinese know that history even if we obviously have forgotten it. Get my drift there?
On a recent visit to China, a friend spotted this ad in a Beijing newspaper. He sent me the photo with a translation of the ad copy.
Yes, you can now join the millions of happy and prosperous Chinese citizens taking advantage of the growing numbers of American and Western multinational corporations outsourcing their production to the hard-working and industrious people of China. This outsourcing has now spread to their food supplies and ingestible items. Since these firms pay us for gross weight and this new weight will be pretty gross and the stupid American government only spot-checks imported items in these categories (they just got lucky on the anti-freeze thing), it has opened an entirely new opportunity which our beloved Chairman is offering to any Chinese citizen willing to do a little of what the foolish Americans call grunt work.
Installing one of these state-of-the-art food additive production facilities behind YOUR hovel is as simple as clipping the coupon below and sending it to the address shown. Your production plant will be shipped to you in 4 to 6 weeks. Supplies are limited so dont fart around. ACT NOW!!
These silly Americans have an expression we have borrowed and modified to describe this new and exciting venture: Dont give me any s**t.
Our motto will be We wont GIVE you any s**t. But well SELL it to you fools at a really great price.
AND LOOK FOR A NEW DROP-DEAD MONEY-MAKER COMING SOON. SOYLENT YELLOW PROMISES TO BE BIG!!
AND YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED TO KNOW THAT THE CHERY PERSONAL VEHICLE TO BE IMPORTED BY CHRYSLER IS SIMPLY A HORIZONTALLY MODIFIED VARIATION OF THE VERTICAL UNIT SHOWN ABOVE. WE SIMPLY SLAP AN ENGINE AND SOME WHEELS ON THAT PUPPY AND OFF SHE GOES! AMERICAS VAST ILLEGAL POPULATION OUGHT TO SNAP THEM UP LIKE TACOS.
Agree. The specifications called for no lead paint and no poisoned dog food. Pretty hard to mess that up unless it’s intentional.
I think “junk” was an extremely NICE way to describe Chinese products. I might have called it “fraud”.
Give Jack to the Chicoms. They can sell off his organs, refine whats left into something made out of plastic, and sell it at Walmart so it can break in a month.
Must’ve been a Chinese bike they discovered under Jack’s Buick.
Heh!
(but then again...aren’t they all made in China now?)
Chinese torch bearer attacked in Paris by “anti-China” protestor. Torch bearer hailed as hero for fighting him off.

Same dude, same outfit, at a pro-China march the same day.
Must be a Chinese goon...

Go Jack Cafferty .....Go Jack Cafferty sounds like finally someone at CNN is calling the right spade a spade.
I think that should be the Olympics Theme, “China! Goons and Junk!”
The Chinese news is reporting this as being said about the Chinese people/race. When anyone who reads or listens knows he is talking about the Chinese government. This is a common ploy by the ChiComs. They know their people are not that great at English and will not understand the true meaning of what was said. Most of my students would agree with this statement and have said as much in my classes. Basicly CNN just needs to ignore them. Anytime China does something bad they start pointing out bad or supposable bad things in other places. 3 years ago there where lots of protest going on in Beijing. All of a sudden the dreaded Japanese had a history book that lied about China. Everyone forgot their protest and started protesting Japan. This is not for our consumption but for the Chinese people. Please ignore the problems in Tibet and look at those horrible westerns. Take no notice to the soldier outside your house the Japanese have a bad history book.
Used to be if it was “Made in Japan” it was junk.
Now it’s made in China.
It’s chunk.
FR needs to ban some of it's Chinese apologist
What did he say that was incorrect?
Nothing. A stopped clock is right twice a day.
You mean the one that ends with a 'k'?
That’s 100% right....too many ChiCom trolls and apologists around though some of them are unintentionally funny.
He even hates himself, he just doesn't have the stones to pull the trigger.
I think the Chinese Foreign Ministry needs to hire people with better language skills - both listening comprehension and speaking skills-wise.
I think your friend is BS’ing you and you don’t realize it.
Jack’s right for once on this one!
I don’t see the problem. His remarks sound accurate to me.
We have to keep one or two ChiCom trolls around just to illustrate how desperate and absurd the Hu Jintao clique is.
