Maher 'Apologizes' to Pope by Suggesting He Should Be In Jail
NewsBusters ^ | April 19, 2008 | Noel Sheppard

Posted on 04/19/2008 8:22:14 AM PDT by vietvet67

Bill Maher on Friday night's "Real Time" made something crystal clear that conservatives have known for decades: Liberal means never having to say you're sorry.

Having on last Friday's program (as reported by my colleague Matthew Balan) "stated that the Pope 'used to be a Nazi,'" Maher was supposed to apologize for his transgression.

Well, if the nonsense he uttered last evening is what liberals call an apology, it should act as a grander indictment as to what's wrong with the extreme-left in our nation (video embedded upper-right courtesy our friend Ms Underestimated):

Last week, I got into some trouble with the Catholic League, not the first time...Not my biggest fans...because I said in our little essay ending the show, I said, "The Pope," and I looked at it again, I looked at the words carefully, "used to be a Nazi." Okay, now first of all, it was a joke, okay? We were in a comedic context. I said, "He used to be a Nazi, and he wears funny hats, and ladies, he's single." So, right away, we're in the context of a joke, okay, and "used to." Okay, but, you know, you got me. The Pope was not a Nazi. When he was a teenager, he was in the Hitler Youth, which meant that he said the oath directly to Hitler and not to the Nazis, which is sorta worse!

Nice apology so far, wouldn't you agree? First, the typical liberal line, "It's a joke," which is what we've seen the past few years any time anybody on the left makes a senseless, insensitive statement.

Yet, even better, in his so-called apology, Maher actually suggested that a child in Nazi Germany saying an oath to Hitler is WORSE than BEING a Nazi. But it gets worse:

But, but wait a second, the thing that argues for their side of this is that, you know what, he was coerced into that. He was a teenager. I wouldn't blame any teen, he was a fourteen-year-old kid in Nazi Germany, of course he's going to do what they tell him to do. So, on that score, you know what my Catholic friends, I will never make the Pope is a Nazi joke again, because you're technically right, okay, and also because it distracts from the main point.

Wait for it!

And the main point I was making was that if the Pope instead of a religious figure was the CEO of a chain of nationwide daycare centers, who had thousands of employees who had been caught molesting children and then covering it up, he would have been in jail.

Nice "apology," Bill!

As a post facto aside, I must say that if Maher is going to invite the fabulous Dutch writer Ayaan Hirsi Ali on the show, maybe he ought to give her more time to speak. Instead, the panel discussion of this installment was dominated by absurdities from Harvard's Cornel West, inanities from Markos Moulitsas, and the normal invective from Maher.

Sadly, Ali was given about as much face-time as Carlton the Doorman.

Did anyone really expect this A-hole Maher to apologize??
His apology was basically a device to get himself more
of an audience to say something even more reprehensible
and offensive. THAT’S the way it works with him. Calculated. Creepy. ( “and Ladies....he’s single!)

I've seen nearly as bad here in FR.

Let them say what they will, mahar and those who parrot the same lies are to be pitied for their willful ignorance and hateful rhetoric.

everybody should just cancel HBO and say that it is because of this asshat. I don't have HBO.... I can rent any of their good programs.

If you absolutely need to have HBO, just cancel it for 4-5 months and then get it again... at least it will drop the bottom line for HBO.

I don't mind that Maher is a disgusting POS. Many liberals are. But he should know that we all know that he is basically a gutless craven coward, a punk who only insults those who will forgive him instead of fatwah him.

As soon as Maher makes similar statements about Mohammed, I'll retract my assertion that he is a spineless coward.

Just for the record:

Joseph Ratzinger was 6 years old when Hitler came to power in 1933. His father (also named Joseph) was a small-town policeman who had utter contempt for, and openly opposed, Hitler's Brown Shirts, and for this reason was forced out of his job and several subsequent rural and small-town police jobs, requiring his family to move several times.

They finally settled in Traunstein, where they used to clandestinely listen to Allied radio broadcasts, an anti-Nazi activity which was, of course, strictly illegal.

In December 1939, membership in Hitler Youth was made mandatory, and Ratzinger's entire class was automatically enrolled. Young Ratzinger refused to attend meetings (a remarkable thing, I think, for a 14-year-old.)

At about the same time, in early 1941, the Nazis seized of one of Ratzinger's first cousins, who was also 14 years old and had Downs Syndrome, and --- what is the word? -- liquidated him. As you can imagine, this event traumatized the whole family.

Ratzinger left high school and enrolled in the minor seminary, which did not have Hitler Youth. Two years later, at age 16 and still in the seminary, he was drafted into the German anti-aircraft corps, in a unit which included many who were conspicuously unwilling to be there ("criminal" conscripts--- that is, enemies of the Nazi state --- and slave laborers from Dachau were also assigned to this unit.)

Ratzinger never took part in combat and, in fact, never fired a weapon. In April 1944 he deserted. He made his way back on foot to his family's home in Traunstein, just as American troops established their headquarters in the Ratzinger household. As a German soldier, he was put in a POW camp but was released a few months later at the end of the War in summer 1945.

Thus concludes Joseph Ratzinger's "Nazi career." It forms the historic and personal basis for Ratzinger's lifelong opposition to the "Culture of Death." It is corroborated from many reliable sources all over the Internet; one good example is this eye-opening article from Jewish World Review.

Ratzinger is a Mensch.

BTW, Use your writing skills to post a quick letter of protest to the head honchos at HBO here:

How else would this itsy bitsy angry little man get any attention at all unless he was bashing someone. I say ignore it for these reasons:

The Pope who is humble receives thousands and thousands who love, honor and respect him.

little willie marh has to BEG for attention through bashing of anyone he does’t like.

Weigh those both and see who comes out ahead.

No, of course not.

He would not make an anti-Muslim joke because he doesn’t want to get himself killed.

He would not make an anti-Semitic joke because he doesn’t want to be accused of Antisemitism.

He would not make an anti-black joke, because that would be racist and would get him fired.

But he will make anti-Catholic jokes to his heart’s content, because his liberal bosses approve of that. Anti-Catholicism is politically correct. It is a form of bigotry highly approved of by the liberal establishment.

Maher is NOT FUNNY.

He is as shallow as the network that gives him air time.

I've seen him at a restaurant in LA, surrounded by at least a dozen fans, which apparently were there to get a free meal off his dime. He looked sad and seemed quite aware of how he was being exploited by fans who would leave him in a second if it wasn't for their “being seen with a celebrity.”

Of course, he was buying drinks for “all his close friends” and acting like the big shot that he is NOT.

I enjoyed the moment — seeing this circus show of the absurd...

Maher is a pretty sad excuse for a comedian. Or a pundit. Or a television host.

A few years ago, he was the headline talent at a fundraiser for Phil Hendrie's charity...some Hollywood shelter for runaways. Phil spoke about it on his show. People got up and walked out on Maher, he was just so UNfunny.

Phil said something like "Okay, Bill, we get the point. You don't like Bush. Try to be funny with it, not angry all the time, okay?"
