The Pity of Earth Day: It Brings Out the Crazies
North Star Writers Group ^ | April 21, 2008 | Llewellyn King

Posted on 04/21/2008 5:07:50 AM PDT by Dukes Travels

The trouble with Earth Day, which we mark on Tuesday of this week, is that it has a powerful hold on crazies. Crazies on the left and crazies on the right.

That certainly is not what Sen. Gaylord Nelson had in mind when he inaugurated the first Earth Day in 1970. The senator and others hoped that Earth Day would attract a serious examination of the stresses on the Earth. Instead, it seems to attract stressed people.

From the left come the neo-agrarians, the anti-capitalists, the no-growth proselytizers and the blame-America-first crowd. From the right come the supporters of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a pro-business phalanx that is in deep denial about man's impact on the environment, and libertarians who refuse to believe that governments can ever get anything right, or that government standards can be beneficial.

I can imagine it must be really frustrating for those wishing to celebrate the Earth and raising awareness for conservation, etc....those are noble causes. Too many fringe freak organizations who jump on the bandwagon and break it’s wheels.

I don’t celebrate “Earth Day” because it co-opted Arbor Day.

IMHO, one should celebrate the Creator, not the creation.

Notice the comparison in the article — the real crazies on teh left compared with those who simply do not believe. If you don’t believe in G. warm. you’re a “crazy.” If you don’t trust the gov. to efficiently handle a problem of Biblical scale and complexity, you’re a “crazy.”

I think that Earth Day is a load.

I guess that makes me one of the "crazies".

Oh, well. It's still a load.

It is fun to mention to the greenies that you honor Ira Einhorn, the founder and guiding spirit of Earth Day. And don’t forget to mention how he murdered his girlfriend and fled to France for 30 years to escape prosecution.

April 22 is also Lenin's birthday.

A 2'fer for many celebrants.

Has anyone else seen the new ad with Newt and Nancy Pelosi sitting on a couch in front of the Capital building, claiming that something must be done now about climate change? It's disgusting!

——since I am presently in SW Wisconsin, I can celebrate “crazy” here in the home of Sen. Gaylord Nelson, by killing several trees-—excess small growth on my family farm-—(with a chainsaw, I should add)—

Yep. The odds are almost exactly 364.25-to-1 against the choice of that date having been an accident, too.

V.I.'s birthday is what I call this day anyway. It gets funny looks from the uninformed.

My eco-wacko, tree hugging, commie neighbor will be celebrating it I am sure. I will be celebrating my way. The 4 WD drive system on the 73 CJ5 hasn't run in a while.

The back yard is now pretty open with the old patio cleared and the ground could stand a little more packing down. I figure some gentle back and forth in both hi and lo range at a pleasant rumble for a bit will show the wacko what I think of it all.

Considering how touchy he is and how much of a jerk he has been lately, it ought to be enjoyable.

Besides the old 304 sounds pretty good these days. I gave it shot of some engine flush on the last oil change. Some of the valve noise went away. I still get some annoying pops mostly on the even side every so often.

When it is possible to PURCHASE a dispensation. i.e., an exemption from a vow or oath, by the mere expedient of planting a few trees, then all is right in the new church of Global Awareness, brought to us by the High Priest Al Gore.

Now if they could turn the Sahara into a new Amazon Basin, that would be DOING something. Think of it, a new cradle of biological diversity.

Especially so, while the Amazon itself is being steadily destroyed. (Or so we have it on good authority, from this very same church of Global Awareness.)

But with all this new plant growth, the existing quantities of atmospheric carbon dioxide is going to have to be augmented, else all these newly sprouted seedlings are going to be starving and withering away.

Dig more coal and burn it furiously. What the heck, start a coal mine fire and keep drilling air ventways to keep it stoked.

Potential crisis in the balance of CO2 coming soon. Stave it off before it overwhelms us completely, and we are all gasping for breath, while plants, due to lack of CO2, quit producing the oxygen we so desperately need.

April 22 is also Lenin's birthday.

And Wikipedia completely misses the point when the fact is mentioned...

It states that there isn't any evidence that Lenin was an environmentalist, as opposed to the simple fact that the hard left has traded "red" for "green."

“...a pro-business phalanx that is in deep denial about man’s impact on the environment...”

Yep. Every businessperson I know is hellbent on “soiling their nest.” What a moronic article.

I work in a garden center, so the crazies have been revving up all week for this, LOL! They’re picking up a HUGE order ($3,500.00) worth of “native” trees and shrubs and undergrowth (which we had to special order) to plant along the shoreline, tomorrow.

I didn’t have the heart to tell them that the native CRAP trees and shrubs they’re planting will do nothing but put gobs of leaves into the lake, adding to our already clogged, polluted and over-algeaed waterways.

*Rolleyes*

I’m sure someone will be in today looking for a tree to plant. They always ask for something “native” which we don’t sell because of their invasive nature. Yep. Plant a native Buckthorn. You’ll love trying to get rid of it in a few years, and your neighbors will just sing your praises for being so kind to the Earth while buckthorn takes over their property as well, LOL!

Buckthorn can become an impenetrable thicket about 10 feet tall. (Think “Briar Patch.)

I have a great Earth Day activity if you live in the South, like I do.

1. Find a smug, vegan, smelly enviroweenie.
2. Tell him/her that you want them to come with you so you can show them a special green spot.
3. When you arrive, throw them into a large patch of kudzu. Laugh as the kudzu rapidly grows over them.
4. As they struggle to get out, explain that you’re merely helping them reduce their carbon footprint on the planet, and return extra nutrients to the soil, thus helping the kudzu grow further and soak up more CO2.

I believe it was on Earth Day 1991 that the crazies around here “took out” the major electrical power supplier. Probably around a million people had no power most of the day.

Idiots.

Had to tell ya...

Two sandals and candles, tattooed & pierced Hippie Chicks came in today to buy a tree to plant for Earth Day. They were both “Eco-Majors” at the UW, Madistan. (My first clue that they would be clueless, LOL!)

They wanted the “easiest tree to grow” and then got a little snippy when I asked them if they wanted an evergreen, a deciduous, a flowering tree, a fruit tree, a hardwood, etc. Where would this tree be planted? Sun? Shade? Blah, blah, blah...my usual “process of elimination” that I use with all customers.

They didn’t have a CLUE because they hadn’t been TAUGHT about trees in school! They actually SAID that, LOL!

Wait just a darn minute! Algore says you can offset your carbon credits by planting trees, and yet, an “Eco-Major” doesn’t have a CLUE about how to plant, let alone CARE for, a tree? (They also took two calls EACH on their cellphones while we were chatting. That is SO RUDE! I walked away from them once; they tracked me down when they were done chatting with their Supreme Leader...)

Yee-Gods. More PROOF at what a bunch of hogwash cr@pola all this Earth Day and Global Warming stuff is...and how terrifying it will be with all these clueless boobs running the country in a few short years. (Well, actually, they’re already at it!)

P.S. I sold them a $25 Eastern Redbud. They can’t do much harm to themselves, others or the Earth with that tree. They thanked me effusively on their way out the door. See? I really AM a nice person, even if I make fun of these dorks behind closed doors. I’ve done my part for the Earth today! ;)

That is too funny! We don’t celebrate Earth day much here in teh south, at least not where i am. OTOH, had we celebrated today, the only planet we could have promoted would have been waterworld! we got @ 10” of rain. The row of cut flowers I planted in the garden is learning how to backstroke. The potatoes will probably rot. Got my green beans planted Sat and they probably floated off. Shrug. Do over.

Your couple sounds like some of the absolutely clueless people I get. “I want a plant this size that stays green all winter, blooms all summer, doesn’t have to be pruned or watered or fertilized, and I don’t want to have to spray it for disease or insects.”
LOL When you suggest plastic, they look at you funny. Why can’t people understand that plants are living things and they’re going to grow, and they’re going to need care!

I walk off from cell phone conversations, too! My time is valuable! They need to decide which is more important—having a conversation about someone’s—fill in the blank—or being waited on? Don’t they have any idea how rude that is? Wait—what am I saying? Manners? BWAHAHA

We live very similar lives. :)

Bet I got you beat, though. I had FOUR, count ‘em, FOUR semi trailer loads of trees, shrubs and perennials delivered today.

Just some GORGEOUS stuff. The yard at work looks FAN-tastic. Can’t wait for the weekend, though this week has been busy already. :)

We got rained on this morning, but this afternoon was warm and sunny. Tomorrow should be a terrific day and we’ll get a lot done outside.

Sorry for your plant/seed losses. I don’t put a thing in until the end of May. I don’t have time for “do-overs.” Wish I did, LOL!

Wow! I don’t have anywhere to put four trucks! You obviously have more room, not to mention more “Mexicans” than I do! We do most of our own annuals and veggies. I got to spend most of yest in the greenhouse. Transplanted 3000 vinca, more tomatoes than I can count, and seeded a bunch more cukes, cantaloupes, squash. We sold out Sat am—didn’t have any where to put more til I sold those!

It not only rained Mon, it hailed. Rained all day yest. Garden may not be a total loss—water is going down. I don’t have time for do-overs, either, but had a window. If I wait, the rains will stop completely and the weeds will take over in a couple of days!

I would love to see your place! Homebody here—doubt I’ll ever make it that far! I still think your idea about hammocks and cabana boys has a great deal of merit!

Have a great day and don’t work too hard! LOL

Mexicans? I’M the “Meaxican,” LOL!

Today should be more mellow. I’ve been telling my crew to steel their spines for a day like yesterday; no one ever believes me until they experience it the first time.

Tomatoes and peppers and a few other misc. veggies are coming in later this week. By the weekend we should be ready to roll, though of course, there will be the usual complainers wondering where the Hibiscus are, or the Impatiens. (Too cold yet; this string of 70-degree days, despite the rain, is making everyone squirrely!)

**I’M the “Mexican**

Si, mi amiga!

Amazing how much of a difference sunshine/clouds or 10 degrees makes when you work at a garden center! We’ve already sold out of cukes and squash and some tomatoes and peppers three and four times. it’ll start slowing down here in a couple weeks and then it will stop like somebody turned a tap!

Have a great day! Don’t work too hard, LOL
