A "why bother?" economy has been created in Britain which has left thousands with no motivation to work, a report published today concludes.
Successive governments have encouraged a welfare culture that has left every family facing a £1,300 bill because the poor stay poor, it claims.
The findings by the public services think tank Reform suggest that increased welfare dependency has made it more difficult for those on the lowest incomes to do better.

I guess it’s a start to mention it in the MSM...
They just want to bang on the drum all day.

Not the UK but I saw first hand this exact same thing in female high school students in New Mexico as early as ‘93. Their plan in life was to have a boyfriend’s kid and get AFDC, subsidized housing and food stamps. Most of them even had subsidies for utilities that were greater than their monthly utility bills, so they got money back for that.
And from what I saw of their mothers, if they ever felt like their income needed a bump they’d just have another kid. The only one who didn’t know who the father was was the state, and they’d even try to sneak the boyfriend in to live rent free as well. They considered the potential of a case worker knocking on the door at midnight to see who was staying there just a normal part of life (and that did happen).
I wonder how long it will be until we have a system as bad as the UK.
Gee, wonder what would happen if they cut off the money supply from welfare ?...
Generation W, My secretary back in 94 explained this to me. Truly disgusting.
I suggest you drive down any main thorough-fare in any city and you will see hundreds and hundreds of independant businesses. Go 2 miles north, south, east, or west and you'll see hundreds more. Repeat anywhere.
Independance, freedom to succeed or fail. Less government. It works !
It's a shame, but so many of these people will oneday look back and say "Damn, I've wasted my one oppurtunity to do SOMETHING."
God Bless the USA.
You get better benefits, housing and money on the dole than working a low paying job.
I've known people that refused to work because they would lose the city's free healthcare.
“Raised on welfare, the ‘Why Bother?’ generation that doesn’t want to work
They just want to bang on the drum all day.”
Hilarious!!! LOL!!!
"Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"
Liberal-Socialist do-gooders never gained the wisdom that the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
The lessons of history, confirmed by the evidence immediately before me, show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fibre. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit. It is inimical to the dictates of sound policy. It is in violation of the traditions of America. Work must be found for able-bodied but destitute workers.

Government regulation of free enterprise has probably stifled more dreams and prosperity over the past two generations more than any other factor.
The education system is another seriously flawed enterprise whose chickens have come home to roost.
Wow. Thanks for posting that.

Yep - used to deal with that all the time. I was a staffing manager for a large manufacturer. The production/machine operation jobs paid average, but I was constantly dealing with the exact same situation you mention.
I’d also get requests from those who worked ‘seasonally’ (read: just long enough to get fired and collect unemployment). I knew dozens who were living with their husbands, but wouldn’t take his last name, just so they could collect more in guv’mint ‘gimmies’ (Big Daddy FedGov apparently gives more $$$ to ‘single’ women than they do married women).
Where’s the incentive to play by the rules? It’s ridiculous the sort of laziness and apathy we’ve allowed to grow in this country.
When the big crash comes, and the bottom drops out, it won’t be pretty. Remember, the losers in New Orleans started looting only three hours after the storm was over. Imagine what it’ll be when hard times actually DO hit!

And the surprise in this statement is exactly what????
And the surprise in this statement is exactly what????
The mind-numbed liberals will never understand one thing: if you subsidize something, you will get more of it. Welfare should be permanently abolished except for anyone who does not have either the mental or physical capability to work. People will work when their stomach starts to growl - it is just that simple.
Do you mean that people should be responsible for themselves??? What a novel thought. Liberals will not like it, though - they love having people dependent (that is, “worshipping”) on them.
hate speech
The backlash is coming.
Labour government == stagnant economy == high unemployment == permanent underclass == skyrocketing alcoholism.
This is what, the third or fourth time it has happened in England? Talk about a lack of pattern recognition. If the Tories weren’t such terrible screw-ups as to give elections away to Labour, England would be much better off.
It’s simple, really:
1) A right to bear arms, and a 50% drop in violent crime.
2) The death penalty, and a 50% drop in homicide.
3) A cutoff of new immigration, and deportation of illegals, and a 50% drop in race problems.
4) Reduction of taxes by 50%, with the economy growing by 50%.
5) You are English. Stop calling yourself British.
6) Quintuple the size of your military. Remember that they work for you, not Brussels.
7) Any law that trespasses “The rights of free-born Englishmen”, does not apply to England. Common law is infinitely better than Napoleonic law. Make the Parliament vote to approve or reject every edict from Brussels.
8) Keep the Pound.
9) Put up a customs house on your end of the Chunnel.
10) Get rid of the damn “Nanny cams” everywhere.
The "W" generation (Ooo, I do like that term) are playing by the rules. that they know and understand.

It’ll be big time ugly.
The catch, of course, is that those who buy (pardon the pun)into the promise of a free ride are now totally dependent on the social programs (and in particular their champions)that are engineered more to keep people down than give the socially engineered paupers a hand up.
That's how the Democrat Party successfully turned hard working, proud people into shiftless beggars here in the USA, so it's no coincidence that their British counterparts would jump on a plan to buy voters with other people's money.
The used to buy slaves from African slave traders with Southern Democrat Plantation Owner's money, but the Republican Party, Abraham Lincoln, and the Free North trashed those plans, so now the Democrats turn Free Men into Slaves by convincing them they cannot stand on their own two feet, that their brains are not enough to compete, and if they only allow the Socialists to purchase them for the paltry sum of a monthly check, entitlements, and of course their vote....., all responsibility for what they do with their lives will lie with the State.
This is modern day slavery, and if anyone has any doubt whether a new breed of slaves is being indoctrinated by their new masters by inciting hatred, racism, fabricated indignation and anger at the prospect of being Free Men, count all the times Obama uses "Slave", "Anger", and "Race" - indeed, barely 2 paragraphs into his manifesto, he proclaims that our Declaration Of Independence is "Stained by the Sin of Slavery".
There is no gratitude for living in the greatest country on earth, one where a black man can achieve riches beyond belief just by applying himself. So can all the other races, of which he seems to have forgotten exists.
He is a slippery opportunist in the mold of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, all 3 twisting MLK's message of succeeding no matter what color into "because of" color...and only if you do what the new masters tell you to.

There ya go. It's for the chirren.
I guess I just don't understand how this is possible...
Could I give up working? In a heartbeat... There are things that I've been dying to do that I've put off over the last 33 years I've been working (I'm 46 now). But just sitting around? Heck, I took a few vacation days (Thursday, Friday, and today - Monday) otherwise I'd just lose them... By Saturday morning I had to VPN into the systems at work, just to keep from going bonkers. I just don't understand how people can NOT work.

The government is bewildering... I've got a cousin who's schizophrenic (he's able to live on his own, and not a danger to himself or anyone else). He was recently fired from a job as a grocery bagger. It seems that he misinterpreted something that may or may not have been said, and he reacted by calling a co-worker "the 'N' word." It seems that they were aware of his "issues," and this was NOT the first time he had some something like this. In fact, it seems that it was the third time, and of course, they had to fire him. His last job, he worked as a clerk at a pharmacy, and he was fired after handing out the wrong Rx for the fourth time. As with many schizophrenics, it's a condition that gets worse over the years. He actually graduated college and has a BA in business administration. But today, I honestly don't believe that we could get him through an interview to be a greeter at Walmart.
He wants to work, but frankly I don't think that he's capable of getting a job, outside of something through a mental health service, which he refuses to go to. He paid into Social Security for more than 35 years, but the government is balking at giving him anything as far as disability or SSI. Even his doctor has said that he's not really capable of holding down a job that requires any sort of personal interaction.
It's amazing how the doors to the treasury are thrown open for people who have never worked, nor paid into the system, but as for people who I believe that system was originally created for, the government says "screw you."
Hopefully a new advocate we've hired will help
Mark
Keep trying for the disability or SSI.
I know that it may take several times for it to go through, but it is always worth the repeated efforts.
They understand perfectly well that these parasites will always turn out to vote to keep the government gravy coming.
Wow, I’d never seen that quote. Thank you!
