A Cellphone's Missing Dot Kills Two People, Puts Three More in Jail
Gizmodo ^ | Apr 21 2008 | Staff

The life of 20-year-old Emine, and her 24-year-old husband Ramazan Çalçoban was pretty much the normal life of any couple in a separation process. After deciding to split up, the two kept having bitter arguments over the cellphone, sending text messages to each other until one day Ramazan wrote "you change the topic every time you run out of arguments." That day, the lack of a single dot over a letter—product of a faulty localization of the cellphone's typing system—caused a chain of events that ended in a violent blood bath (Warning: offensive language ahead.)

The surreal mistake happened because Ramazan's sent a message and Emine's cellphone didn't have an specific character from the Turkish alphabet: the letter "ı" or closed i. While "i" is available in all phones in Turkey—where this happened—the closed i apparently doesn't exist in most of the terminals in that country.

The use of "i" resulted in an SMS with a completely twisted meaning: instead of writing the word "sıkısınca" it looked like he wrote "sikisince." Ramazan wanted to write "You change the topic every time you run out of arguments" (sounds familiar enough) but what Emine read was, "You change the topic every time they are ***king you" (sounds familiar too.)

Emine then showed the message to her father, who—enraged—called Ramazan, accusing him of treating his daughter as a prostitute. Ramazan went to the family's home to apologize, only to be greeted by the father, Emine, two sisters and a lot of very sharp knives.

“The local press has pointed out that the faulty localization of cellphones in Turkey is causing “serious problems” when it comes to certain “delicate words” in Turkish, and they are calling to enhance localization of technology to avoid these mistakes.”

Uh... maybe Muslims should simply be less insane and that would solve the problem...?

Just a guess.

A prostitute that couldn't stay on topic no less.

It’s time the UN decreed that the entire globe must use the English language exclusively.

I agree. You don’t hear about Episcopalians evicerating their son-in-law’s because they dropped a dot. Even if they didn’t, the maximum consequence would probably have been not getting a Christmas card, and not being able to come over for the Super Bowl party.

Eventually, we’ll all get it: Islam is a Pandemic which should be Eradicated.

How many times does ‘convert or die’ become the motive behind the crime before people wake up and understand that there isn’t much of a difference in philosophy between national socialism in Germany in the 30’s, and Islamic fundamentalism in the new century?

The problem lies with the wooly-headed morons we put into the colleges to teach over the last 40 years. Washed up 60’s hippies taught us “moral equivalancey” and that we should “tolerate” other cultures because, hey, we are all worth the same. My dad's high school history book, circa 1945, told you that America was superior to all other countries, that Western Culture was the only one worth emulating, and that any belief system that would kill over this kind of thing was full of idiots. When we started doing anything but laughing with a superior sneer at stories like this, we were cooked.

Bingo.

“My dad’s high school history book, circa 1945, told you that America was superior to all other countries, that Western Culture was the only one worth emulating, and that any belief system that would kill over this kind of thing was full of idiots.”

It was worth stating again. If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.

The bill coming due for the boomer generation is going to be a doozy. You’re already starting to see it:

1. Let’s grow our own gasoline! Wouldn’t that be great?
2. Let’s bail out those poor pilgrims that signed on the dotted lines for those houses they couldn’t afford.
3. Let’s not do nuclear. We may burn a hole in the planet that goes all the way to China. (Oh, we won’t? Nuclear is clean? Well, my bad. Just don’t do it within sight of my beach house, OK).
4. If we keep people from drilling for oil here in the US, then the price of gas will get so high free enterprise will have to do something about it, and that’s activism!

You have to hand it to them though, is there ANYONE, before or since, that’s been better at marketing? Truly, this is their legacy.

This is all a plot by Isreal where the cell phone was invented.
