Oakland Police Worried About Increased Vigilantism
KCBS All News 740 AM ^ | April 21, 2008 | Bob Melrose

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- Oakland police are worried that more and more people will take the law into their own hands, after two store owners shot two robbers in recent days. People have a right to protect themselves, but things can get out of hand quickly if everyone starts packing a weapon, said Deputy Police Chief Dave Kozicki.

"That's a concern that law enforcement has all the time, that people will engage in vigilantism," said Kozicki.

A 22-year-old Oakland man was shot at least three times and critically wounded when he tried to hold up a liquor store Saturday night. And an 18-year-old Pittsburg teenager was shot and wounded when he tried to rob a store last Thursday night.

If you choose to defend yourself you're a vigilante, according to the Deputy Police Chief.

Unbelievable.

agreed..I thought you were a vigilante if you meted out justice AFTER the crime was committed..so how can self-defense be an act of vigilantes??

I truly wonder what the LEO’s expect. Crime steadily rises and the more for violent crimes. Home invasions, armed robbery, aggravated assaults, gang violence, etc. all show that society is on the brink of collapse in certain sectors.

What amazes me is that there are not more instances of armed persons ‘cleaning’ their neighborhoods.

Out of hand? If robbers know that store owners are packing, what’s the chance they’ll try and rob it?

A vigilante is someone who is not a law-enforcement officer who takes it upon themselves to enforce the law. If these guys were walking up and down the street looking for law breakers and then shot someone they found sticking up a store, they’d be vigilantes. Shooting someone in self-defense when they came to you and tried to rob you is not vigilantism.

vig·i·lan·te
–noun 1. a member of a vigilance committee.
2. any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime.
–adjective 3. done violently and summarily, without recourse to lawful procedures: vigilante justice.

In what way does protecting your life and property have anything to do with the definition of vigilantism?

Got news for you, Deputy Police Chief. Things are already "out of hand", and have been for some time.

Typical left-coast big-city cop BS-speak. He'll do anything except acknowledge the problem.

Easy for Kozicki to say - he gets to ride around Oakland in a limo and both he AND the driver are packin’ heat.

Maybe he should look at his own crime stats, his department’s dismal performance, and then STFU.

Deputy Police Chief Dave Kozicki, from what he said he wants the felons to go ahead and rob and kill you and for you to do nothing to protect yourself so they can arrive on the scene and get their photos on TV.

Yeah, it's pretty disgusting.
"People have a right to protect themselves, but things can get out of hand quickly if everyone starts packing a weapon"
So you have a right to defend yourself, but not everyone should defend themselves properly... after all, that would be infringing on the cops' right to solve murders. I would like to see the deputy police chief try to prove that "things get out of hand" as lawful concealed carry rates increase... His talk is nothing but B.S.

Oakland police are worried that more and more people will take the law into their own hands . . .

Oakland police need to be reminded that the law is already in the hands of the people. The people have deputized the police to enforce the law. If the police are unwilling or unable to do so, the people have every right to do it themselves or replace the police with someone who will enforce the law, starting with the nimrod who made this statement.

Yeah, life gets harder for the thugs and the police. The thugs because they get shot. The police because then they actuall have a crime and a criminal that can be prosecuted. That takes time.

Be good little victims while the cops and pols go through their hand-wringing rituals.

That's two off the street, although it seems a shame they're still wasting oxygen. The Chief seems to think it's a bad thing. I figure firearms training is cheaper than prison. And lots less stressful to society than rampant crime.

Maybe if the Chief would take the enforcement of the law back into his hands the citizens wouldn't have to take it into their own. Just a thought.

The sheriff should be made to work the late shift - unarmed - at a crime-riddled Quick Stop for a few months. His talk is easy because he’s packing.

A historical note: some of San Francisco’s downtown streets are named after prominent leaders of the city’s “Committees of Vigilance” in the 1850s.

like “semi-automatic”

I had a lib relative arguing with me about gun control.

He said, “why would anyone need a semi-automatic?”

I said - “tell me how a semi-automatic works”.
dunno
“well, what IS a semi-automatic to you”
shrug

“do you think you should know what things mean before you advocate a stance on this issue?”

silence, but the answer was in the negative - you can take a stance based on no info if you’re a lib.

Oakland has a great airport. When I have business in SFCA, I always fly into Oakland because, half the time, SF is fogged in and they have to land at Oakland anyway. Plus, its close to Trader Vic’s.

Like Rush always says, Libs do not expect to be judged on their policies’ results, only their intentions. They want you to “stop packing heat to defend yourself” because they care about the criminals and do not want you to “take the law into your own hands” (defend yourself with lethal force). As long as they claim that a bloodbath will happen, then the intention to prevent it is all that matters.

Yeah, and despite the fact that the experiment has been repeated probably 30 times as OTHER stats have implemented CCW, with precisely the same results, the anti-gunners STILL keep trying to make the same disproven argument.

A vigilante is someone who is not a law-enforcement officer who takes it upon themselves to enforce the law.

I don't think that's correct. I think a vigilante is someone who is not a judge who takes it upon themselves to adjudicate violations of law.

Non-LEOs, depending on jurisdiction, have authority to enforce laws under certain circumstances.

That said, what was cited in the article are clearly examples of self-defense, not law enforcement.

Maybe this guy should be worried about all the robberies instead.

It’s just that cop mentality that they’re absolutely the only ones who should be summoned during a crime. You should never summon Smith & Wesson, Glock, Beretta, Para-Ordnance, Heckler & Koch, Remington, Benelli, Mossberg, etc. during a crime. Always the police so they can draw the chalk outline around your body.
