ACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- Paul Davis, a singer and songwriter whose soft rock hit "I Go Crazy" stayed on the charts for months after its release in 1977, died Tuesday. He was 60.
Davis died of a heart attack at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, the city where he grew up, cousin James Edwards said.
Davis' other popular hits included "65 Love Affair;" "You're Still New To Me," a country duet with Marie Osmond; and "Ride 'Em Cowboy."
His 1977 album "Singer of Songs -- Teller of Tales" featured the ballad "I Go Crazy." The song slowly climbed the charts, peaking at No. 7 eight months after its release, according to Billboard's Web site. The song stayed in the Top 100 for 40 weeks, according to Billboard -- a record at the time for the magazine's Hot 100 chart. The mark has since been surpassed many times; the current record holder is LeAnn Rimes' "How Do I Live," which stayed on the Hot 100 for 69 weeks

Sad... Truly one of the greatest romantic hits.
A bad-breakup song that would make you bawl your eyes out! (or so I’m told...)
prayers
Beautiful song but the only time it made me cry was listening to Lee Greenwood butcher it.
RIP Paul Davis, you died way too young.

Well, she migrated to the west coast a few years after me. I still see her occasionally.
Maybe I’ll take a drive down there this summer and get her all hot and bothered.
I personally liked “Cool Night” best.
guess that leaves Steve Forbert as Meridian's greatest living singer.
Thanks for the link...
Steve Forbet of “Romeo’s Theme” fame?
I do too. Sad news. He made some really good music. Prayers for his loved ones.
She asked if I changed the station because the song made me think of her. I almost wrecked because I was laughing so hard. Get over yourself. What an ego!
I quickly scrapped any notion of rekindling that relationship because of that song. The girl in question is on her 3rd marriage now.
Paul likely had a different idea what effect his songs would have. I'd like to thank him for saving me time, money, trouble, and heartache.
You’re welcome. Paul Davis left us with a lot of memories.
Gracias, as they say in Chicago.
I remember playing that song a lot when I was a DJ. It was a crowd favorite.
Yer welcome, as we say in the South. : )
I still like it. : )
I liked Paul’s music, and have a specific recollection of ‘I Go Crazy’ being one of the first songs I heard after graduation at Parris Island. My platoon had to stay on the island and do “work parties” for a couple of weeks to be available for a trial.
Anyway, that song played while I painted a staircase in an NCO hut somewhere.
Some things you never forget.
BTW, Paul’s cousin posts here at Free Republic (or used to).
This is amazing. I gravitated from Doo Wop to Classic Rock and have never heard either of him or that song before.
“Cool Night” was my favorite also.
Amazing..or, maybe not, I’ve probably “tuned out” songs that didn’t particularly take my fancy through the years, and discovered them later. May have been the same for you.
Davis also played Peter in the record album version (the one with the brown cover) of Jesus Christ Superstar

Davis who was from Meridian died 1 day after his 60th birthday on April 22
another notable singer from Meridian, Al Wilson, who had the '73 hit song "Show and Tell", died on April 21
One of my favorite Al Wilson songs.
Strange coincidence—that song came up on random shuffle on my iPod shortly before I read this story.
65 Love Affair was a beautiful song, and one of my favorites.
RIP, Paul. Thanks for the great tunes.
RIP.
