Phoenix residents and the media still are abuzz over the mysterious four red lights that appeared in Monday night's sky in north Phoenix. A man who lives on the north side of the city, however, claims he's responsible.
The man, who did not want to be identified, told 3TV that he used fishing line to attach road

I think this is an accurate explanation. I saw the video, and it did look like flares.

I did this about twenty years ago - filled a clear garbage bag with helium, tied on a flare and a 40' length of aluminum foil to insure a decent radar return and let go.
It made the next day's paper. (-:

Interesting.
I noticed that the recent episode did not have ANY of the emphatic dramatic observations the AZ flyover 10 years ago had.
Joksters abound.
Doesn’t change the facts of the real, any.

No kidding. It seems everyone is on this edge with a hair trigger just waiting for annihilation or something. Man, the liberals and the MSM have the populace in a near panic. A couple of Sams store run out of rice and its a global calamity. Globull warming is coming to kill us all. Gas prices are high - again - and we're all talking about peak oil - again. Man, calm down everyone!

I hope not during wildfire season.
On another thread I suggested that a bunch of us buy those Chinese lantern hot air balloons, and do a coordinated release across the USA- so I was copycatting before the cat was out of the bag!

How about a garbage bag with helium, towing a garbage bag with a mixture of acetylene and oxygen, tied to a flare with cannon fuse.

If this man really set flares aloft with balloons, he should be arrested.
The Japanese during WWII attempted similar stunts to start forest fires and damage civilian homes.

To be honest, I would not do that today as I now know that such a thing could damage power lines and maybe even cause a fire. But back in 1988 it sure was a lot of fun!

Road flares attached to helium filled balloons is about as stupid and as dangerour a stunt as I can imagine. Remember the Hindenburg??
This guy needs to spend a little time in Sheriff Joe Arpayo’s “recreation center for morons”!!!

More information here on the KTAR website. His neighbor saw him release the balloons. And I agree that he should spend some time in Sheriff Arpaio's crossbar motel.

In truth, Quix, I'm not a complete skeptic as regards unusual aerial phenomena. One case that I've puzzled over and can't quite explain is the Frederick Valentich disappearance:
Valentich Disappearance (Wikipedia entry)
If the published transcript of that young pilot's final conversation with his air controller is accurate, I have no idea what he was witnessing. Of course, neither he nor his plane was ever found, so it's likely that we'll never know exactly what happened to him.

"I did this about twenty years ago - filled a clear garbage bag with helium, tied on a flare and a 40' length of aluminum foil to insure a decent radar return and let go."
How admirable. My gosh how proud you must be. Then did you go let the air out of your grandma's tires? Please tell us more about your other daring adventures. Sorry I don't understand the allure in pranks like this.
To: DustyMoment
"Road flares attached to helium filled balloons is about as stupid and as dangerour a stunt as I can imagine. Remember the Hindenburg??"
The guy is an idiot. It could start a fire if you float flares over someone's house. I wonder how old this guy was and why he had nothing better to do than play with matches and balloons.
To: snarks_when_bored
I believe that one happened just as he described it while it was happening.
I also believe that . . . at least on graduation from this life, we learn a lot about such curiosities.
And, it may be that when ‘disclosure’ occurs, many things will be revealed. We shall see.
Thx.
