I can remember using DDT when I was a kid. It was in a pump can similar to a caulking device.

The problem was that there were no garbage disposals and maggots quickly evolved in the aluminum garbage cans.

Garbage was taken to incinerators in those days. It worked well. Plastics eventually caused the problems with the incinerators.

Yeah, they didn't worry about it too much before someone pulled the fire alarm on it.
