Many adults in the United States believe a specific kind of weapon should be forbidden, according to a poll by Knowledge Networks released by the Associated Press and Yahoo. 55 per cent of respondents support a law requiring a nationwide ban on semi-automatic handguns, which automatically re-load every time they are fired.
In addition, 77 per cent of respondents think people in their community should be allowed to keep handguns in their homes.
The U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment guarantees Americans the right "to keep and bear arms." Some American states have enacted their own gun control regulations, independent of existing federal legislation.
Earlier this month, African American leader Jesse Jackson discussed the current state of affairs, saying, "We should revive our ban on semi-automatic weapons. You only use them to kill people."

I wonder if anyone polled stopped to think that virtually all hand guns are semi-automatic... including the classic 6 shooter.

Just to balance out the survey, they should have also asked whether the respondents could actually hold a pistol without wetting themselves.
My cheap little 22 is safe...stupid gun...unless 'every time' is VERY loosely defined...

I see why people approve of this. lol. It does not even tell exactly what an automatic weapon does. This was very cleaver, but outright lie that people fell for.
Wonder what the results would be if polled about revolvers - which have the same practical result (pull trigger, go bang, repeat). The mechanism is merely different.
The great thing about polls in a Constitutional republic is ... they don’t matter. Rights are recognized and must be protected, even if unpopular.

They want to push the AWB into a total ban so they are now pushing to ban ALL automatics. So when McCain surrenders with reinstating the AWB we are supposed to be happy we only lost 1/2 a loaf instead of the full loaf.

The poll mentioned in the article is useless, of course, except that it tricks the ignorant and the easily misled. Of course, anti-gunners know that guns save lives but to them, government monopolizing all force is a prerequisite to a “civilized” state - why being civilized is synonymous with “enslaved” is a mystery to me but that’s how the anti-gunners think.
The right to keep and bear arms, a right more important that the right to free speech is not determined on a poll and, even though what I’m going to say next is unpopular, our rights to self-defense (by fiat, gun ownership) is not predicated on a relatively crime-free population.
If even 20% of gun owners were committing murder, it shouldn’t abrogate your right to own a gun.
And as for any so called mythical social contract, I don’t remember signing on anywhere.

they are now pushing to ban ALL automatics.
Thye have already banned all automatics (machineguns). Semi autos are the next target. If they manage to ban those my Ruger 10/22 semi auto rifle will be banned, as will my .45 1911 and my Ruger .22 Mark I. They are counting on the great unwashed’s inability to distinguish betwen those two.

Exactly. When I was asked what I carried as a deputy (I didn’t mention what I carry now that I’m no longer in the LE bidnis) I said “A Sig p226 semi in 357 Sig,” and my interlocutor thought that was some kind of machine gun!

Sig p239. I sprung for the SAS because the - oh what do you call it, where they grind off all the corners - and the wooden grip make it very un-snaggy. It came in .40 but I just enjoy 357 Sig more and I’m going to get a 357 barrel when I have some money lying around doing nothing (in other words, never.)
