THE HAGUE, 26/04/08 - Ahmed Marcouch, leader of Amsterdam's Slotervaart district council, says the radical Imam Fawaz Jneid has declared a Fatwa against him.
Marcouch said on television programme Pauw & Witteman, in a debate with Fawaz Jneid, that the Imam has signed a statement of Arab clergy in which he is called a 'hypocrite' and 'disguised unbeliever.' According to Marcouch, the statement has the status of a Fatwa (Islamic curse), as a result of which his life may be in danger.
Marcouch, a member of Labour (PvdA), is a Muslim and Moroccan. He wants a ban on Fatwas to be enshrined in Dutch criminal law.
Fawaz Jneid accuses Marcouch of "taking the side of the Dutch". Thus, Marcouch defends the rights of homosexuals, which is according to Jneid in conflict with Islam.
Shortly before the murder of Theo van Gogh, Jneid called on Allah in a sermon to give him cancer. The radical Imam denied that remark was a Fatwa. Nor has he declared a Fatwa against Marcouch, according to the Syrian, who has a Dutch passport but speaks scarcely a word of Dutch.
