Revered New Jersey Imam, Facing Deportation, Has Interfaith Support

PATERSON, N.J. — For a dozen years, Mohammad Qatanani has supported the members of the Islamic Center of Passaic County by speaking at funerals, hashing out ethical dilemmas and sometimes opening his home to domestic-violence victims at a moment’s notice.

But now Dr. Qatanani, 44, the imam of the mosque here, requires the support of the members: he has been barred by federal immigration authorities from renewing his driver’s license, and must call on friends to ferry him to hospitals for visits with the sick among his flock. There are fund-raisers for him at the mosque. And after Friday prayers, the hugs the men give him seem to last extra long.

The imam, who is Palestinian, and most of his family face deportation because of his detention in Israel decades ago and questions about whether he lied about it on his application for permanent residency, which he made in 1999 and which was recently denied.

The case has galvanized a diverse group of community figures from a variety of faiths who fear the prospect of losing a leader they see as an example of Muslim moderation. Many of them will gather in West Orange on Thursday for an ecumenical dinner in his honor.

Since Imam Qatanani’s arrival at the Islamic Center, which sits on a well-heeled hilltop in this polyglot city, attendance at Friday prayers has doubled to about 900. It is a place still healing, in some ways, from the arrest of its former imam, Mohammed el-Mezain, in a terrorism-financing case against the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. (Mr. el-Mezain is one of five Holy Land leaders awaiting retrial on charges of funneling $12.4 million to Palestinian terrorists. He was acquitted of all but one charge, on which there was a hung jury, last year.)

I don’t see what the problem is here: I’m Roman Catholic, and I support his deportation as well.

When my mother lived in a really nice street in Paterson, the arabs moved in the neighborhood and forced her out. So I think it’s pay back time, don’t you?

He's a Muslim extremist who lied on his application about prior felonies and he's ineligible to remain in this country. That's way it should be.

I have first-hand experience of being “forced out” of a neighborhood. Not sure how deporting some sort of a pastor has anything to do with “payback.”

Qatanani was arrested in the West Bank and detained for three months in 1993, but Israeli officials made no mention of a prosecution.

Immigration officials are refusing to grant Qatanani, 44, permanent residency in the U.S. because he failed to disclose the conviction in the his green card application, Slovinsky told the newspaper

“The Rev. Phil Latronico, a Roman Catholic priest who is chairman of the North Jersey Christian-Muslim Project, credited Imam Qatanani with increasing discussions among Christians and Muslims tenfold.”

This sort of activity rings true with me. It is the Roman Catholic diocese where I live which is behind the placement of thousands upon thousands of dog vomit Somali Mohammedans in my state...and after the bishop and his lickspittels get their cut of federal resettlement funds or money for acting as a clearing house for welfare benefits for these creatures, the rest of us, taxpayers, get handed the bill for supporting these subhumans. Lately, Roman Catholic clergy have been the first to demand the criminal prosecution of anyone who speaks put against Mohammedanism. In the meantime the men have four “wives” and they are popping out pups, with “free” medical care of course at the rate of hundreds and hundreds per year. We get to pay for that too.

I rejoice at the deportation of every one of these devils for whatever reason! I just wish we could get rid of the religious and political leaders who bring them here along with the Mohammedans themselves!

” his application for permanent residency, which he made in 1999 and which was recently denied. “

9 years to deny the application? (Yeah, universal health care’s gonna work.)

OH! poooooooor Imam!

Got his widdy biddy butt deported.

Why does he want to stay in the land of the infidel when he can be praying in his homeland 5 times a day under "ideal " conditions?

Why would he WANT to stay in this accursed land of the shaitan George Bush?

Don't let the door hit ya on the way out, A.H.!

If he lied on his application he committed visa fraud. He needs to go forthwith.
