I just saw a clip on Fox News of Obama playing basketball, wearing a USMC T-shirt. Does anybody know the backstory on this?

That’s right up there with Kerry hunting in Ohio in the fall of ‘04.
To: paterfamilias
It’s John Kerry with a hunting rifle.
Political multi-tasking- going for the basketball fan and the military vote.

Maybe he borrowed it from Pastor Wright. He was a Marine.
To: paterfamilias
A member of his campaign staff ran down to the local PX and bought the shirt so that he can wear it in front of reporters. That’s all.

Well, he already has the Hamas and Hezbollah vote wrapped up. He’s trying to expand his base.

The former SgtMaj of the Marine Corps, SgtMaj Estrada is actively supporting him, so I am guessing it some type of homage to him.

We’ll give him a hearty cheer again, Hurrah! Hurrah!...

Oh we’ll all be there

Met a ol’ China Marine onboard the ship yesterday, hope to spend some time with him , a real Patriot imo, the next few days before we disembark.

Personally, that’s exactly why I think he did wear it - to reiterate the fact just as you did. On talk radio yesterday and in talking with lib friends last night, they are all over the defense of Wright as being pro-America due to his service and due to his commendation received (which I’ve only heard about and have no knowledge of at this point); thus, Wright’s comments were clearly taken out of text and have no bearing on the election.

Army Civilian employee for almost 20 years and deployed to Iraq for the past 8 months. And I still do not believe I have earned the right to wear an ARMY tee shirt.
This man has neither earned the right to wear anything associated with the US military. He should apologize for using the shirt as a cheap political trick.

As a combat veteran, I am offended that Obama had that shirt on. I don't care what anyone says, his views of his country and the military are not that of this country.
You state it succinctly, he is unfit.

This clip was on our local news last night--apparently, he played a little "pick-up game" at a local Indiana high school, prior to a speech he gave.
The choice of t-shirt really makes you wonder, "is there anything these pols won't stoop to, in order to score a political point?" Can you imagine his staffers, scrambling about at the last minute--"we got a photo op in a gymnasiium, get us something military. I mean, it'd be one thing if it were a well-worn t-shirt with sweat stains; I'd probably have a little more respect for the guy.
Hilary isn't immune from this pandering either. Wasn't it just last week, she was sporting a Catholic-oriented bracelet, complete with images of the Virgin Mary, while campaigning in Pennsylvania?

Probably tied to the recent defense of Rev. Wright by saying he must be a patriot because he served as a Marine.
Of course, Lee Harvey Oswald was also a Marine...
To: gov_bean_ counter
Army Civilian employee for almost 20 years and deployed to Iraq for the past 8 months. And I still do not believe I have earned the right to wear an ARMY tee shirt. I know exactly how you feel. When I was young and living with my parents, we were all Marines. From dad to mom to all us kids, we were a USMC family. I had the ID card to prove it. :) At that time I would proudly wear a USMC t-shirt. As a little kid I considered myself a Marine... I must have been because I lived on a Marine Base. :)
But after I grew up and had my own family I have not felt the right to wear a USMC t-shirt, though I am an avid supporter of the Devil Dogs and will always stand respectfully when they go by. (Neither have I earned the right to stand at attention)
I still recall how bad I felt when I turned 18 and I had to turn in my ID card. In hindsight, I should have enlisted right then and there... but I didn't, and I'll never deserve to wear a USMC t-shirt for that decision. God Bless the United States of America and every one of her men and women in uniform... AND the supporting cast of civilian employees! <<--that means YOU! :)
Thanks for your service!
