The United States has the combat power to strike Teheran if needed, Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff warned Friday.
He alleged Iran was ratcheting up its support for militias in Iraq by providing them with newly manufactured weapons and bringing them across the border to receive training from members of Teheran's Republican Guard.
Mullen said the military is preparing to roll out evidence, including date stamps on newly found weapons caches, to prove that recently made Iranian weapons are flowing into Iraq at a steadily increasing rate.
He would not detail the evidence, which is expected to be revealed by military leaders in Iraq as early as next week. Another senior military official said it will include mortars, rockets, small arms, roadside bombs and armor-piercing explosives, known as explosively formed penetrators or EFPs that troops have discovered in caches in recent months.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the evidence has not yet been made public, said dates on some of the weapons were well after Teheran indicated late last year that it was scaling back aid to insurgents. In addition, the evidence will include information gleaned from detainees who were reportedly trained by members of Iran's Quds Force, as well as insurgents who received instruction on how to train others.
Part of the firepower the military will unveil was used to support insurgents during the recent fighting in Basra in southern Iraq, officials said.
Mullen said he has seen evidence "that some of the weapons are recently not just found, but recently manufactured." Both Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have made clear that while all military options are on the table, they prefer at this point to use other pressures on Iran.

The Jerusalem Post are amateurs. It's the "Revolutionary Guard". The "Republican Guard" was Saddam's.
The election......
This is so predictable. The Iranians are ramping it up as the election nears knowing we probably won't do anything.
Well, first of all, we have to defeat the anti-American crowd in our own country. Besides, we are no longer in control as of ‘06, seems that everyone has forgotten that. They are not through betraying our military yet, more to come.
The so-called GOP “leaders” are falling like flies hit with a good dose of Raid, so who (other than Pres. Bush and Gen Petraeus) are looking out after our sons and daughters? No one.
Decision time is near, I believe.
President Bush to find the "set" he had back in 2003...
How I wish we'd call their bluff.
We're already fighting Iran in Iraq anyway. I'd like to see us go in and teach them a lesson.
We have Iran surrounded for crying out loud. Let's ROLL.
The Republican Guard was obviously Bush’s fault, those evil Republicans...
Agreed, and the stories like this that have been picking up lately seem to be preparing us for the inevitable............I'm ready, let's roll!!!
If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come. But in these cases
We still have judgment here;
that we but teach
Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return
To plague the inventor:
this even-handed justice
Commends the ingredience of our poison'd chalice
To our own lips. He's here in double trust;
First, as I am his kinsman and his subject,
Strong both against the deed; then, as his host,
Who should against his murderer shut the door,
Not bear the knife myself. Besides, this Duncan
Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been
So clear in his great office, that his virtues
Will plead like angels, trumpet-tongued, against
The deep damnation of his taking-off;
And pity, like a naked new-born babe,
Striding the blast, or heaven's cherubin, horsed
Upon the sightless couriers of the air,
Shall blow the horrid deed in every eye,
That tears shall drown the wind. I have no spur
To prick the sides of my intent, but only
Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself
And falls on th'other.
DUH!!!
We had better use it before it's too late.
The most pressing issue our country, the world, faces today, is the threat posed by Iran. The President in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief is uniquely positioned to effectively deal with it, the least of which is being politically free to deal Iran the just punishment, destiny it deserves, that is, to have Iran follow the path of our previous enemies, in being relegated to the dustbin of history.
DoD is probably waiting for the State Dept to come up with a more PC term to describe our enemies other than Jihadists.
There is no need to escalate.
But where do we strike Iran, exactly? Those cetrifuges could fit in Habib’s basement and a thousand other places.
I've been saying this since we invaded Afghanistan; that the long term plan was to surround Iran.
Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return

cuts both ways, however, karma is not a part of Islamic thinking, as far as I know. Still, guys, keep doing bad things like bringing in IEPs and killing innocent Iraqis, there’s gonna be some point where you are going to royally piss off some higher power, and even Allah won’t help you.
“So,What Are We Waiting For?”
I think it’s reasonable to speculate that an attack on Iran _today_ would:
1. Prompt an immediate spike in petroleum prices that would wreak havoc with the US and world economies, and,
2. Throw the presidential election to the Democrats.
No doubt that the Bush administration and the military has had plans and preparations in the works for sometime now. But I sense that Mr. Bush (and high-ranking “Republicans in the know”) have been afraid to act on them for fear of the ecomonic/political consequences, and rightly so.
I’m CERTAIN that Mr. McCain has been briefed on what is coming down the pike, and that Mr. Bush will hold off for the time being if McCain requests him to do that.
I predict that if an attack on Iran comes, it will be just AFTER the November elections, when Mr. Bush has become the lamest of lame ducks, but still has the power of the presidency and commander-in-chief to act. By then it will be too late for the ‘rats to even think of impeaching him (which of course they would otherwise try to do), and it also “takes the mantle of blame” off the shoulders of the incoming John McCain if he wins the presidency. Any action McCain takes after January will be seen as necessary to continue the policies of the previous administration, rather than the initiation of those policies himself.
The Democrats and the media will SCREAM about a late-fall attack. Let them. By then, it will be too late, and the Iranian dreams of a nuclear state will have been pummeled into rubble.
Of course, the attack will still send petroleum prices skyrocketing in the short term, but this MUST be the price we pay for removing the far greater threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. There is no way to avoid this if we are serious about the ongoing war with Islam, and serious about protecting Israel, Europe and HERE from a possible future nuclear attack. A difficult choice, but a reasoned one.
For Mr. Bush and the Republicans that must hold office after his departure, though, it is the only prudent course of action that can be taken.

sigh
I posted at #26 but your post is much more spot on! After reading your post it does make sense that Bush would do it after the elections and allow McCain to take over without the major blame.
Either way, the time is nearing to confront Iran with a major response.
Yeah, and it's almost $4 a gallon, too! I'm no greenie, but I think we really need to go for alternatives to oil. If we went nuclear, we'd decrease our dependence on Mid-East oil, and we'd have lots of depleted uranium for those cool DU rounds the libs hate so much.
No worry, our rebirthed nuclear industry would give libs plenty to whine and protest about, so the Cindy Sheehans of the world will still be able to find employment. It's a win-win for everybody!
There's a revelation.
Hopefully our intentions will be to return the weapons to Iran, with interest. Give them all to the folks in Iran who need them more that the Iraqi Terrorists. Surely there are some radical anti Muhlah students there who would appreciate the help.
Like your tagline!
I believe Iran is a “paper tiger”. Their economy is in
a shambles, They don’t have refineries to refine their own
oil. Iran is phase two of the strategic plan to pacify
the Middle East.
Iran is preparing for a suicidal attack they will institute or instigate in their belief that they can bring on ‘the twelfth Imam’. When you look at Iran through traditional build-up to war eyes, you miss the pure evil insanity of the leadership. The people of Iran must kill these evil bastards off or be incinerated in the coming holocaust their leaders want to happen for religious purposes.
What if Bush’s remarks earlier this week to disperse the tax rebates checks early was a sign of a military action against Iran is coming. He did mention this money could be used to help pay for rising fuel cost. All the pundants, including me, thought that was odd for the President to release the tax rebate early to fight rising fuel prices. Maybe he knows once we start the bombing, we Americans are going to need all the money we can get to pay the 6 or 7 dollar a gallon it will be. I think I’ll use my tax rebate to buy a bike.
“What if Bushs remarks earlier this week to disperse the tax rebates checks early was a sign of a military action against Iran is coming...”
I doubt it.
The Power? Maybe. The WILL? NO.
Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding!
We have a winner!
We need to pull our kids out of Iraq before we expose them to retailiatory strikes from Iran if we and Israel pre-empt.
