Anti-war Cindy Sheehan files to take on Pelosi

Peace activist Cindy Sheehan wants to snatch House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's congressional seat from her in November, but first she's going to need the help - and signatures - of 10,198 friends and supporters.

Sheehan was at San Francisco City Hall on Friday to take out papers for her independent run for Congress, but without those signatures from voters in the district, her name won't show up on the ballot.

"It's an uphill battle," said Sheehan, who vowed to run against Pelosi in July after the speaker refused to start impeachment proceedings against President George Bush. "But I'm excited about the signature-gathering process. It's going to be an opportunity to talk to people about our campaign."

The 50-year-old Sheehan, whose son, Casey, was killed while serving in Iraq in 2004, became the public face of the anti-war movement when she mounted a demonstration outside Bush's Texas ranch that lasted from 2005 to 2007.

But what is the reality? Yesterday I paid $3.60 a gallon. Nearly double what it was when big tuna promised “elect dims and we’ll bring a change to gas prices.” I cant afford anymore of dims’ changes.

Since she hasn't filed the paper yet, she doesn't have to account for what she has done with the money. Actually, I think it's illegal to solicit and collect campaign funds if you are not a legal candidate. Oh, wait! laws only apply to conservatives and republicans. Silly me.

Pelosi's strategy is to act as if Sheehan doesn't exist, much as she has done with her Republican opponents for the past 20 years. Her campaign ads will basically present her as if she was running unopposed and just wants a validation of her mandate. That's a winning strategy for incumbents in safe districts -- paying attention to an opponent only legitimizes them. If Sheehan were somehow to show threatening poll numbers that would change quickly to a run-to-the-right strategy. There's a very strong template for San Francisco (mainstream) Democrats to run right (in local terms) to defeat left-wing challengers or incumbents -- it's been the standard way that the Mayor has been elected for the past 30 years (Feinstein, Jordan, Willie Brown (second time) and Newsom all depended upon doing this to win).

What's interesting is that Pelosi's is probably the only Congressional district in the country where the Democratic primary electorate is more conservative than the general election primary electorate -- the number of Republicans and right-leaning independents who get added to the mix in the general is outweighed by the Greens, Peace and Freedom's, and left-leaning independents who get added in.
