It’s an incredible story. A nationwide network of murderers. I have my own instant theory about a group that might be motivated to do such a thing, but hey, it’s probably just bias on my part.
Anyway, it’s an incredible story. I sincerely hope they catch the scumbags involved.

There was some theories on how they could get these guys into a vehicle since some of them could have put up stiff resistance. One theory was that a hooker could have been used to lure someone into a vehicle. I think that some of them could have been befriended in a bar and been given so much to drink that they accepted a ride. It is also possible that someone could be putting drugs in their drinks to make it easier to overcome any possible resistance.
On thing that was disturbing to say the least was that the FBI ruled out serial killings. The New York detectives produced some compelling information though.

That's why the sign over the entrance to NYPD's Major Case Unit says "Through these doors pass the best detectives in the world." It's in the water. Old Irish water!!

I hate to rain on everyone’s parade here, but those two retired detectives are chasing shadows.
In all but one case, they were ruled drunken drowning accidents. Young men do dumb things, esp when you add booze, night, and large bodies of water.
There are never any witnesses. They are all last seen leaving a party or leaving friends, drunk.
And, not surprisingly, there is no evidence of anything except that they drowned—they aren’t left dead on a roadside or strangled or anything like that. No, this is the perfect crime.
The perfect conspiracy executed over, and over with JFK, OJ, 911, and so on.
In one special case, the person drown without being drunk.
They’re using the one case of a young man who drowned sober to a legitimacy to their theory.
Anyway...chasing shadows. Over 10 years, 39 young men drowned, drunk in bodies of water, and one drowned sober.
All accidents. Even if the 1 kid were tortured and murdered, that doesn’t make all the rest of them murders.
That’s the most logical solution. Sorry to say it.

Its men, not cute chicks. Nobody cares. And, except for one Asian, the men are all white...now if it had been men of color murdered, Al Sharpton and Jesse "Hi" Jackson would be demanding a congressional investigation.

Young men do dumb things, esp when you add booze, night, and large bodies of water.Perhaps. But the painted smiley-faces found at so many of the murder sites are rather an odd coincidence, don't you think?

The only obvious way to track down the suspects is to go deep undercover in Irish pubs and drink lots of malted whiskey over a prolonged period.

City after city, when they'd find the spot where the body went in, they would find something else: The symbol of a smiley face. Yeah, painted smiley faces just show up at random at accidental drowning scenes.

I grew up in LaCrosse, where a number of these drownings occurred. I never followed this too closely, as I assumed that they were simply drunk. When I grew up in LaCrosse the legal drinking age was 18 and everyone pretty much drank like a fish, so it didn't seem that stange. I agree that that face is creepy, now I'm not so sure that they were accidents. I didn't realize other towns might also be involved.

It could be a black magic group like in the Son of Sam killings. Young atheletic men would be seen as having lots of sexual energy and as such would be powerful sacrifice’s. I tangled with some of these people and they are more common than you think. They believe they can get away with murder.

There was a photo of one of the smiley faces on TV today. It was a wierd looking smiley face and had a cross on the forehead.
I don't know if all the smiley faces look like that but if they do, it's a concerted effort.

"I have my own instant theory..." I do too. Rumors of such a group have been "out there" since Jacob Wetterling.

"Yeah, painted smiley faces just show up at random at accidental drowning scenes"
the street name written in a distant location, too. it's a taunt.
"In Michigan, they found something strange among the group's
graffiti: the word 'Sinsiniwa.' They couldn't figure out what
it meant until a few months later when they arrived in
Dubuque, Iowa to investigate the death of Matt Kruziki.
His body was found on Sinsiniwa Avenue."
"Sinsiniwa" is way to much of a stretch to call coincidence.

Very creepy. I kind of dispelled it as something out of the tabloids, but they do have some oddly compelling commonalities.

“His body was found on Sinsiniwa Avenue.”
No that is the weird part. A body in Michigan was found then 2 weeks later in Iowa they found another body and that is where the Sinsinawa written.
Sinsinawa was the street in Michigan where the detectives think the body was put in the water.
Now that is another part that makes it weird. Reference at one murder scene to a location from the previous murder.

Or the victims were targeted. Then the targeted victim is stunned with a stun gun. Even if the victim was was seen by witnesses close to the party or bar, the stunned person could be explained away by the criminal to anyone that the victim had too much to drink.
Just a thought, among many.

The REALLY weird part will be when they find a reference at the murder scene that refers to a location for a FUTURE murder. (Although they may not want to use something like “Sinsinawa”, but maybe something more like Maple Ave. and 5th Street.)

Then again... if the cops found “Maple St” at a crime scene there would be even more mystery and confusion.
There are “Maple St” at like every one of the 20k towns, ciies and boros in the U.S.
Very few Sinsinawa street names.

what about the smiley face found at each scene? They weren't found at each scene, only at a few places during a decade-long investigation. Notably, they only found one (eight years ago) in Wisconsin and none in Minnesota. Yet these are two states where many of these murders were supposed to have taken place.
