Jim Geraghty Reporting

BARACK OBAMA

Jeremiah Wright: ‘We cannot see that what we are doing is the same as al-Qaeda, under a different color flag.'

Hugh Hewitt offers new audio of two sermons of Jeremiah Wright, one from September 2001 and one from April 2003.

Permit me to propose a new rule: If your mentor of 20 years has ever declared the United States to be ‘the same as al-Qaeda, under a different color flag, calling on the name a different God to sanction and approve our murder and our mayhem!’ you are ineligible for the Presidency.

In the first excerpt, Wright urges his congregations to say with him, "enemies," as he describes Jesus' enemies, "a provisional government with all of the political power and an occupying army."

Wright describes Roman soldiers who mistreated Jesus as "Commandos.. trained in urban command and trained to kill on command... the Third Marine Regiment of Rome," and that Jesus was mistreated "as a prisoner of war."

He describes the Roman presence in Jerusalem as "Operation Israeli Freedom." (So in this America-as-Rome metaphor, is Abu Zarqawi Jesus?)

"It was the Italian Army that led Jesus to Calvary Friday morning."

America, the modern day Roman soldiers, came to Iraq to crucify Hussein, the modern day Jesus.

But praise be! Hussein has risen again! Hussein walks amongst us!

Hussein will take America to the promised land of total surrender and defeat that all guilt-ridden whities so yearn for!

Praise be to Hussein!

Quit taking his actual words and taking them out of context. I am sure when he compared the US to al-Qeada he meant it in a positive way.

No. That only applies to mainstream churches and ones without large African-American congregations. How do you think the Clintons got away with it?

Here’s a link to a video of the entire sermon. Videos 2 & 3 cover most of rev. Wright’s comments that have been discussed.

That Obama would say THIS about his association with Bill Ayers tells you all you need to know about him:

"...The notion that ... me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn't make much sense...."

Under al Qaeda rule the man would be missing fingers, hands and his head; whereas, under Democratic rule, if he loses anything, he's clearly lost his head for not reasoning this out.

Exactly! Hearing the context of the sound bites is even more damning than the sound bites alone.

It is disgraceful. The intellectual level of these talks is beneath contempt. That two Harvard Law grads would chose this congregation before all others speaks volumes about them.

I occasionally heard similar talk at the Seminary I used to attend. The Romans were portrayed as evil political occupiers according to an oppresor/oppressed template. Nothing but warmed-over Marxism. It was usually a scripture scholar who would promote these interpretations.

I once raised the following question: If the Romans were so evil, why does Jesus reserve some of his highest words of praise for the Roman Centurion? The Lord praises the the Centurion with the words, "Such faith have I not found in Israel." But if the Romans are evil occupiers, then the Centurion must be extra-evil because he's an agent of the empire's military arm. Why then would Jesus praise the Centurion? Doesn't this show that Jesus did not use the power/oppression template to judge the people around Him? Didn't Jesus judge people individually, according to their holiness and love of God? Didn't He have a higher measure of value apart from a person's class status?

Of course, I got a lot of hemming and hawing, a lot of song and dance. I got everything but a straight answer.

How such convoluted thinking every gets any prominence is an illustration of actual hatred dominating a person's thought process. The shame of it is: he has an audience. The tragedy is: that one of them wants to run the country.

Well why wouldn't they be to everyone but themselves. I guess someone taking over your country and meaning to rule it forever is not evil in your mind.

Jeremiah Wright sees no difference between America and Al Qaeda? In an earlier generation, a lot of liberals saw no difference between America and the Soviet Union. Its called moral equivalence.

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
