RENO, Nev. - Scientists urged residents of northern Nevada's largest city to prepare for a bigger event as the area continued rumbling Saturday after the largest earthquake in a two-month-long series of temblors. ADVERTISEMENT
More than 100 aftershocks were recorded on the western edge of the city after a magnitude 4.7 quake hit Friday night, the strongest quake around Reno since one measuring 5.2 in 1953, said researchers at the seismological laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.
The latest quake swept store shelves clean, cracked walls in homes and dislodged rocks on hillsides, but there were no reports of injuries or widespread major damage.
Seismologists said the recent activity is unusual because the quakes started out small and continue to build in strength. The normal pattern is for a main quake followed by smaller aftershocks.
"A magnitude 6 quake wouldn't be a scientific surprise," John Anderson, director of the seismological lab, said Saturday. "We certainly hope residents are taking the threat seriously after last night."

Well Reno, welcome to world of California earthquakes. It doesn’t matter where in the country you live, a person or family needs to prepare for disaster or emergencies of any kind. Every household needs to prepare and it only makes sense to do so.
Except here.

I know she’s a tough stud, but I don’t think Janet Reno is any match for an earthquake.

An earthquakes is just like Janet Reno. She killed off men, women and children at the drop of a hat and with no remorse. They don’t harm each other out of professional courtesy.
Of course not. One guess is as good as another. Nothing "scientific" about it however. So called "scientists" sitting around doing nothing except maybe playing cards were caught off guard just the same as everyone else.
Decades of government grants and reams of graph paper haven't given us any more capability to predict these things any better than the dreams of an old Indian chief did.
Generally, if you see a pressure ridge gaining height rapidly, you know something just might happen.
Well there’s one good reason to live in Boston i guess...
How many times will casinos see “Tilt”.
I check the USGS page every day and I’ve never seen so many quakes in the U.S. as I have in the last few days.
Seems like there have been more lately. Not devastating like the San Francisco one, but a lot of small ones as you say.
