f television is the nation's mirror, then no two TV characters reflect the intensifying "two Americas" gap better than Chris Matthews and Jimmy McNulty.
A recent New York Times profile of Matthews describes a name-dropping dilettante floating between television studios and cocktail parties. The article documents the MSNBC host's $5 million salary, three Mercedes and house in lavish Chevy Chase, Md. Yet Matthews said, "Am I part of the winner's circle in American life? I don't think so."
That stupefying comment sums up a pervasive worldview in Washington that is hostile to any discussion of class divides. Call it Matthews-ism an ideology most recently seen in the brouhaha over Barack Obama's statement about economic dislocation.
The Illinois senator said that when folks feel economically shafted, they get "bitter." Matthews-ism spun the truism into a scandal.

I refer to them as Manhattan-Martini-Marionettes. Matthews is an spitting, elitist, preening socialist.
Was this article posted on FR?
You left out that he laughs like a teenage girl.
Sorry :-)

"The Matthews were photographed in their picturesque Victorian home in Chevy Chase after both had returned from challenging days at the office. Kathleen,an award-winning reporter in the nations capital for 25 years, still anchors the 5 and 6 p.m. news for WJLA Channel 7."
I don't think it's been posted on FR since it's from a NYT magazine section.
The author is an elitist who is angry that Matthews is giving elitists a bad name.
Wonder who plays that baby grand?
What a pompous pouf - surprised the Mrs. isn’t sporting jodphurs and a riding crop.
The black lab is a nice touch....bet he stays in the yard most days.
Just your everyday, lunch-pail toting, DBM commissar...
Matthewss contract expires next year, and NBC officials clearly would like to renew it for considerably less than the $5 million a year he is making now.
Matthews mentioned that he and his wife, Kathleen, have been contemplating a trip to Damascus. Its something they have wanted to do for a long time. But he worries that he might make an inviting target for a kidnapper.
I can imagine getting some big-name media figure would be a big propaganda catch for them, Matthews said. You can imagine what the neocons would say if I were kidnapped. Theyd be like, See, Matthews, terrorism isnt so funny now, is it?
A number of people I spoke with at NBC said that Russert can be disdainful of Matthews, whose act he often sees as clownish. They also told me that Russert believes Matthews is something of a loose cannon who brings him undue headaches in his capacity as NBCs Washington bureau chief.
Matthews is also aware that little brother Keith Olbermann has become the signature talent of MSNBC. Matthews seems less than thrilled with co-anchoring MSNBCs election coverage with him, as he has done on many nights during this campaign.
When Olbermann is on the same set, Matthews appears different restrained, even shrinking at times. According to people at NBC, Matthews has not been shy in voicing his resentment of Olbermann.
Friends who have known him a long time say he worries that the suits at NBC want him out.
There has been long-running speculation that Matthews could be a candidate to replace Bob Schieffer, whenever he retires, as the host of CBSs Sunday morning show Face the Nation.
The more intriguing notion is that Matthews could challenge Senator Arlen Specter, who is up for re-election in Pennsylvania in 2010.

I noticed that little nugget about a trip to Damascus. Isn’t Syria on the terrorist state list?
It was the last time I heard...
I had a slightly different take on it: the author is a progressive elitist who is annoyed that Matthews etal, claim to be, and speak for regular working class Americans, because, well, that's what he wants to do.
I wish they'sd all just STFU, and let working class Americans SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
