Wright: This Wasn't an Attack on Me, It Was an Attack on the Black Church
National Review Online ^ | April 28, 2008 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 04/28/2008 6:51:11 AM PDT by Aristotelian

Watching Wright at the National Press Club, I thought the headline would be that he said we have witnessed an "attack on the black church, not an attack on Jeremiah Wright." But he's hitting a wide variety of notes... hitting the Bush administration for "cutting billions in food stamps to pay for war in Iraq." Wright mentions his Goddaughter arrived in Iraq last week; he declares that those who questioned his patriotism used their positions to avoid military service.

Hits those who "worship Sunday mornings in a black clergy robe, then burn crosses on Sunday evening with a white Klan robe."

"The Christianity of the slave-holder is not the Christianity of the slave."

UPDATE: Wright says, "launched by people who know nothing of the African-American church"... How much must one know about the African-American church

On Farrkhan: "How many people do you know who could get one million people on the mall? Farrakhan is like E.F. Hutton. When he talks, black America listens. Whether they agree with him or not, they listen."

On Obama's reaction: "We both know that if Obama had not said what he said, he would never get elected."

A genuine laugh: "I'm not running for office... I am interested in being vice president."

Asked about God d*** America: "I'm not a spiritual mentor... I'm his pastor. I told him that if he's elected, on November 5, I'm going after you, because you're now a representative of a government (check transcript?)... It's about policy."

"We have never apologized for slavery. We have never apologized for Japan."

I missed it, but I understand that he said, "You can't do terrorism, and not have it come back to you."

"He had to distance himself from those statements because he's a politician."

Wright comes off as mean-spirited, belligerent, egotistical, cynical, nasty, dishonest and condescending. Not at all Christian.

People get pleasure out of watching someone else get away with something. That explains Reverend Wright.

The following is not an attack on Fred Phelps. It is an attack on the White Church:

USA Today reports:

Here’s what Wright had to say in response to allegations that his sermons, widely circulated on YouTube, were unpatriotic: I feel that those citizens who say that have never heard my sermons, nor do they know me. They are unfair accusations taken from soundbytes and that which is looped over and over again on certain channels. I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did [Vice President Dick] Cheney serve?

Update at 9:47 a.m. ET: He defended his association with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

“How many other African-Americans or European-Americans do you know that can get 1 million people together on the Mall? He is one of the most important voices in the 20th and 21st centuries,” he says.

“When Louis Farrakhan speaks it’s like E.F. Hutton speaks. All of black America listens. Whether they agree with him or not, they listen,” he adds.

Update at 9:49 a.m. ET: Wright says he warned Obama, a Democratic presidential hopeful: “If you get elected, November the fifth I’m coming after you because you’ll be representing a government whose policies grind under people.”

If he says it’s an attack on the “black church”, he can then say any criticism of his remarks is racist. See how that works? This kind of stuff has been going on for decades. I’m not going to rationalize someone’s stupidity and obnoxiousness because he claims to be an African.

This guy is a lunatic of the first order, a charlatan, a bigot and a demagogue.

He is pissed, and he seems to have been calculating over the past few weeks how he would get his revenge.

He is accomplishing a lot on this speaking tour, and it is as fascinating as it is frightening.

Lastly, his persona is a blend of Fred Sanford, Kingfish, and Professor Irwin Corey.
1. He is very impressed with himself.
2. He is determined to torpedo Baraq’s candidacy.
3. He is determined to make Baraq’s failure a result of white racism.
4. He is doing a scorched-earth, hell hath no fury, tour to vindicate himself.
5. He is dangerous.
6. He is exposing the old OJ verdict factor to have worsened since that trial.

I think it's all coming down to the first commandment. His god is his race rather than Christ. My church preaches Christ crucified, his, the black man crucified. He needs to sit down and talk with someone and get his theology straightened out.

The more Wright opens his mouth, the deeper he digs the hole he's got himself and Obama in.

But Wright's a gift. In his prayers that God will damn America, he stated what the Democrat Party of the 21st century stands for--for all to hear.

Separatism from the other side. Only instead of in public schools and water fountains, it’s in an even more basic area - religion.

Everything he says, from the victimization to the chickenhawk comments, from blowback to slavery, has been said a million times. It’s standard leftist dribble. You see it at every anti war protest. From smurf Dennis K to RonPaul bots, nothing new here. Read it on every pro-US or conservative youtube video. Read it on a leftist blog any day of the week. Hear tools from hollywierd parrot it after smoking dope and listening to some hippy spew it. It’s no wonder his “church” had ties to Hamas.

The sad thing about this whole story is that people actually honestly believe this crap.

If BO gets elected, it shows that white America is not as racist as Wright believes. His election would threaten the entire race-huckster/victimology business as well as Wright’s world view.

You know, we vilify him, and criticize him, and can see all his nutty errors and egotism. But he’s not interested in us.

For every 20 people this man angers, there will be one black person that jumps up and says, “Yes, yes!”

That person is now his. I think Wright has a demonic vision of a new black power era, with his cultish religion at the core. And a LOT of money (he wouldn’t live in that house if he didn’t like it.) And who really knows what Obama is?

If America elects Obama, they will deserve every thing that happens. No one can say we weren’t warned.

"We have never apologized for slavery. We have never apologized for Japan."

I got news for you, Wright, you hate mongering, race bating garbage.

Over 360,00 dead American white men already gave you all the apology you shall ever see from me and mine, with another 275,000 injured.

YOU owe them an apology...big time.

As to Japan...no apology necessary there either.

We stopped the war by killing a hundred and thirty thousand with those bombs, and avoided a single American casuality. If we had invaded Japan, which was the next step, then there would have been millions of Japanese dead...most at their own hand...and there would have been something on the order of 200,000 American casualities.

I THANK GOD Trumnan droipped those bombs and will apologize to no one for it...much less the likes of you.

Even the Japanaese do not ask for an ‘apology’ for this.

An awful lot of them are smart enough to see the same thing- that a prolonged war would have meant hundreds of thousands MORE dead, and the Japanese emperor had surrounded himself with yes-men who told him what he wanted to hear: that they were winning.

I don't think anyone has ever gotten 1 million people to assemble on the mall. Farrakhan didn't--just because he called it the Million Man March doesn't mean that one million men actually took part.

Jim Robinson could have called his March for Justice on Oct. 31, 1998, "the Million Conservative March for Justice" at that rate, and then claimed that 1,000,000 people took part.

Those who study history and are honest about it, know the truth, both for slavery and for World War II.

Wright, Cone, Obama, and their ilk are simply not honest about it and are trying to use those events and their perverted interpretation of history to get gain, power, and wealth.

Age old story, replayed before our eyes once again.

If his political rantings against the United States constitute the mindset of the "Black Church", then I'm against the black church as well. Wright is nothing but a falsely enraged bigot, displaying his wares in order to draw in more money.

I wonder if religion constitutes any part of the teachings in his church. I wonder if it enjoys the tax-exempt status that is given houses of worship.
