Roger Waters Uses Coachella To Deliver Strong Political Statement (Endorses Obama, rips America)
Festivalwise.com ^ | 4/28/08 | Jason Gregory

Roger Waters used his headlining set at the Coachella Festival in Los Angeles yesterday (April 27th) to deliver a strong political statement against the US Government.

Following a performance which included a complete rendition of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, Waters dispatched an inflatable pig across the crowd.

On the side of the pig was the message "Don't be led to the slaughter", which was accompanied by a cartoon of Uncle Sam wielding two bloody cleavers.

The underside of the pig had the name of Barack Obama along with a ticked ballot box, reports the Associated Press.

Waters, a well-documented supporter of the democratic candidate, has continued to make his political feelings known over recent weeks.

Writing in the Independent recently, Waters described Obama’s main rival, Hillary Clinton, as "ghastly", saying that she would invade Iran if her bid to become America’s first female President was successful.

Water’s set closed a hugely successful Coachella Festival, which also saw headlining performances from Prince and Jack Johnson.

It's bad enough when American rock stars preach at us and tell us who to vote for. Now British rock stars are telling us who to vote for, all while mocking our country.

It certainly is bad enough that young people actually pay attention to the opinions of so called stars. Whatever happened to entertainers just entertaining? Bring back the good old days.

F%$@ Roger Waters.

My wife and I walked out in the first half of his concert in Gainesville, VA last summer when he started in on this same BS.

My mantra for “activist” musical performers of ALL stripes is as follows:

“SHUT UP AND PLAY/SING!”

It’ll be “interesting” to see what happens if he does this in Houston. The Woodlands Pavillion banned Ted Nuggent after making politically insensitive remarks at a concert there.

But they were ok with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders asking if there were any meat eaters in the audience and then proclaiming that we can all “choke on it”.

Yeah, I went with some friends to see the Pretenders several years ago at that theater downtown at Bayou Place (I believe it was called Aerial Theater at the time) and she did that "Meat is Murder!" crap and also made snide remarks about how all we Texans have guns.

Before the concert, we made a point of eating at Harlon's Barbecue next door and having the meat combination platters. As the theater door attendant tried to hand us anti-meat pamphlets, we said "No, thanks. We just had some GREAT barbecued animal parts next door."

I won't go see them again. I used to like their music, but I won't pay good money to have some liberal preach her garbage at me.

And then their newspapers (Daily Telegraph) point at L.A. as a third world city, due to the high percentage of Hispanic immigrants in the workforce.

“Rog is a Caliphoney these days living in LaLa land escaping British tax rates.”

Actually, he lives in New York. But you’re probably right about the “escaping high British taxes” thing. Led Zeppelin did the same thing. Which makes Waters a hypocrite, as much as he rails against the US. If he thinks our ways (high freedom, low taxes) are so bad, why is he living here? Like a lot of liberals, he likes to talk a good Marxist game while living a capitalist lifestyle.

Roger Waters was the front man for the group Pink Floyd, he along with Sid Barrett, Nick Mason, David Gilmour and Richard Wright put the genre of Acid (or psychedelic) Rock on the musical map. Their Album "Dark Side of the Moon" sold over 15 million copies in the U.S. and over 40 million copies world wide. It spent over 740 weeks on the Billboard Top 200, more than any album in history.

With that said, I still love listening to Pink Floyd; Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, in additon to Dark Side are all awesome albums.

Roger Waters is a political idiot as are most of the clowns in the entertainment industry. I just have to ignore their childish political views, they just do not live in the real world.

Why do people care about this a**hat and his politics?

Do you care about the musicianship of politicians?

No?

Then why care about the politics of musicians?

Especially foreign musicians who choose to tell tell you how to vote in YOUR OWN country, not theirs?

For every impressionable young person who may think Waters, Sir Elton, Bono or any other foreigner giving Americans advise on how we should vote is "really cool, man", there are many times more older and wiser voters who realize the damage this kind of 'support' does to the "supported" candidate.

Please keep it up Roger. Your big pig Obama balloon stunt may seem like a success while preaching to the choir at your concerts, but once the majority of Americans learn of your foolishness, you only end up being mocked at the expense of yourself and your anointed candidate.

The old guard musicians in England are now seeing their country become a balkanized nation of press two for english and foreign language market signs.

When Westerners establish businesses and communities in other nations, it is called “imperialism” and spoiling their sovereign language, customs, religion, etc.

The Left is against the West and has been for 100+ years.

If Rog is not a US citizen, can he put forth such political advertising for the Obama campaign? Isn’t that a form of contribution?

Actually, Roger Waters is not just a Liberal - he is profoundly anti-WAR - that being WAR of any kind for any purpose. His father was filled in WWII before young Roger ever got to know him. It was this very thing that led to creation of The Wall and The Final Cut. The Final Cut is basically a lashing out against the Falklands mess between England and Argentina. This continual struggle for creative rights and their application is what caused him to leave Pink Floyd and start a solo career. Evidently, the other members of PF didn’t want to be part of Roger’s rants anymore. His work since the split has been very good. Try not to read too much into his politics. He has a perspective that would be great in an ideal world (No war), and we should strive to someday achieve that. (If only those Islamofacsists would leave us alone). As an artist, he is really something else - blending in a lot of background sounds and such - Dark Side of the Moon was a masterpiece. His politics don’t surprise me. His album Amused to Death is about the first Gulf War. It is musically intricate even tough I disagree with the lyrics. Heck, I like Green Day even though I totally disagree with their lyrics and stances. I won’t let a musician’s stance drive me away - although it is disappointing to see them do something so stupid as to alienate half of the fanbase.
