Rep. McDermott pays $1 M to Rep. Boehner in taped-call case

Rep. Jim McDermott has paid more than $1 million to House Minority Leader John Boehner, ending a decade-long dispute over an illegally taped telephone call.

McDermott, a Seattle Democrat, paid $1,093,297 to the Ohio Republican's campaign committee earlier this month, spokesman for the two men said Monday.

The payment is in addition to $64,000 McDermott paid Boehner in January, as part of court-ordered punitive damages in the long-running case.

A federal judge ordered McDermott to compensate Boehner for attorney's fees after Boehner sued McDermott for leaking the contents of a cell phone call that was illegally recorded in 1996.

A federal court found last year that McDermott had no right to release the call, in which Republican leaders discussed an ethics case against then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga.

A Florida couple recorded the cell phone call on a radio scanner and gave the tape to McDermott, who at the time was a senior member of the House ethics committee. McDermott leaked the tape to two newspapers, which published articles on the case in January 1997.

The Supreme Court decided in December not to revisit the case.

Boehner's spokesman, Kevin Smith, said the $1.09 million payment includes $628,000 from McDermott's campaign account, and about $465,000 from McDermott's legal expense trust fund.

Is this legal, to us campaign funds for settling court rulings that don't pertain to one's campaign?

Baghdad Jim just thought he was AWFUL smart, accepting the tapped phone conversations between Republican House leaders, and not having the least compunction about how that might be “illegal”.

Now there was a situation where the authorization for the tap was CLEARLY lacking.

McDermott didn’t pay anything out of his own pocket.

Maybe so, but as Kevin Smith pointed out, every penny will go towards defeating Democrats.

McDermott just paid with OPM (Other Peoples Money).

They should have removed a few of his fingers so he would not forget.

A scanner they supposedly bought at Radio Shack. Bull Shit. Whoever recorded the call had much more sophisticated equipment than radio Shack carries. I smell the Clintoons.

A Florida couple recorded the cell phone call on a radio scanner

This recording more than likely came from an eavesdropping program called echelon. It was put in place by Bill Clinton.

It is highly unlikely that anything of value could have been intercepted over the air.

Wireless switches are mandated to have "wiretapping" capability.

“Is this more of the culture of corruption?”

Frankly, based on what I have seen of McDermott, he’s not smart enough to understand culture of corruption. He’s just the most dim bulb in the string of bulbs that make up the democrat party congress.
Stupid, bombastic and useless.....but the folks in his district must think he is just grand to re-elect him time after time.

The next question that needs to be asked is where did that “modest, champion of the little guy” pant load McDermott get a million bucks.

Means nothing if he can use this to raise triple that amount. I can imagine the fundraising letters now. It’s little more than a whack on the pee-pee, to borrow a phrase.

Good scanners, I bought two at Radio Shack back then, purchased up to about the late 90’s can receive the frequencies of cell phones and also military frequencies.

The later units were banned from being able to get the military freqs but I am not sure about the cell phone ones.

It’s about damn time McMaggot coughed up the cash.

Oh wait, it didn’t cost Baghdad Jim a penny out of his own pocket, he used campaign funds.

Which makes all the sense in the world, considering his past ‘work’ on the Ethics Committee, lol

‘Ethics’ is to McMaggot what a Crucifix, Holy Water and the Name of Jesus are to demons possessing human bodies.

Methinks the reporter will be called into the corner office tomorrow morning for violation of protocol.

I think it is fine that the sOB has topay. The fact of the matter is that he ought to be in jail for committing a felony, and be removed from the house.

DemocRATS though cherish their criminals and elevate them.

Whatever the faults of the Republicans, and they are many, at least we weed the garden.
