MIAMI - The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq.
The ad says President Bush has talked about staying in Iraq for 50 years, then plays a clip of McCain saying, "Maybe 100. That'd be fine with me."
The announcer then says: "If all he offers is more of the same, is John McCain the right choice for America's future?"
Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said the ad deliberately distorts what McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, said.
The committee's chief counsel, Sean Cairncross, said he sent letters Monday to NBC, CNN and MSNBC insisting that they stop airing the commercial.
At issue is McCain's answer, in January, to a question about Bush's theory that troops could be in Iraq for 50 years.
McCain said: "Maybe 100. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, that'd be fine with me, and I hope it would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al-Qaida is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."
Democratic Party chief Howard Dean said "there's nothing false" about the ad.

I thought they were demanding they pull the ad because it shows American soldiers getting killed.
I’ve seen the ad, and it didn’t ACTUALLY show American soldiers being killed. It shows two American soldiers standing together near a tree, and a very obviously shopped/edited in explosion of some kind, and a quick cut to something else. It in NO WAY looked like actual footage of a day of war in Iraq. Having said that, the far worse thing is the obviously dishonest editing which jumps from
“100 years.....” to “that’d be fine with me.” , when that is IN NO WAY what he said/ this is the kind of jokey editing that is only taken “seriously” as humor, when it’s done on Letterman or Leno.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
This "reaching across the aisle... let's all get along..." is a bunch of BS. President Bush started this and we're always on the losing end. We never play soundbites from these libs proving what nasty, hatefull lying bastards they are.
Typical RNC/GOP personage:
“We never play soundbites from these libs proving what nasty, hatefull lying bastards they are.”
Why not? It’s the YouTube age. Dont wait for the RNC to do it, do it yourself and show the world!
What does DNC chairman Howard Dean say about his own organization's ad? "We deliberately used...some ominous...words. This isn't...very upfront about...John McCain"Do you suppose Dean would still think quote mining isn't a distortion?
Are there any adults left in the DNC or RNC? This is like Junior High stuff.
No one is amused but the pundits and spinmeisters.
It does try to make it look as though the soldiers are blown up. Also, it is obvious the ad was edited.
McCain should have never made that stupid statement. He should have known that it would be used against him.
Howard Dean has the ethical standards of a cockroach and should be overridden whenever possible.
It’s time that we support politicians who state the obvious truths, and fight those who falsely use those statements.
Their quote is so purposefully deceptive it can only be called a lie. They think it will stick.
Excellent post!
I have seen the ad many times and they have someone else talking with mCCain’s picture as if it’s McCains words , the ads clearly an invention. Fortunately I have no sympathy for Mr “ reach out to democrats Maverick”
“RNC demands networks yank McCain ad.” Curious headline, seeing it is not a McCain ad at issue.
IF politicians (of any stripe) had to tell the truth, the airwaves would be eerily quite. Blackbird.
If they can't hit a curve ball they don't belong in the big leagues.......
I'm sick and tired of all the whining coming from both sides.........
“Whaaaaa! Mommy, make those meanies stop!”
Hey, why not have McCain just apologize for the 100 years remark and Move On? It worked so well over the Wright-Obama ad in NC.
Spineless twits.
If McCain is going to beat Hillary, he needs to put someone like Huckabee on the ticket. I know a lot of folks don't care for the "Huckster" but he'll help win some red states and the evangelicals (including blacks in the bible belt who like Huck). He's strongly pro life and, he could take Arkansas and the other southern red states from the Clintons. At this point, it's about winning and beating Hillary. I don't think Obama is a factor any longer -- especially if he loses Indiana and narrowly wins NC.
That's what I gathered from another thread. If it is just that McCain is taken out of context...no problem. That's politics.
But video of soldiers begin hit by an IED...wrong as two boys...you know the rest.
Because there is no reason to apologize.
Exactly.
Just like the ole “withering on the vine” ad from the newt era. dnc losers can’t help it. They LIE as easily as breathing!
Where is the RNC ad about the FEC now that the Voter ID issue is settled?
I work for a living. The RNC needs to earn its pay.
