Of course nothing about pro-abortion Catholic democrats like John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi, etc that took communion during the pope’s visit.

Good point.
But the others are not in the New York Arena.
Egan should have drawn a line with all of them.

Kerry, Kennedy & Pelosi have ALL voted for abortion. They are no longer Catholics.

They’re not in Egan’s diocese and don’t even reside there on a temporary basis (as they do in DC, although they’re technically not in that diocese, either). Cardinal O’Malley of Boston should be dealing with Teddy and John Kerry, and the Archbishop of SF should be dealing with Pelosi; although, on a day to day basis, it should be Archbishop Wuerl of DC who should deal with them. He’s a known coward and devotee of the Democrat party, though, so he probably won’t do anything.

Not sure Egan came up with this on his own...perhaps a nudge by the pope? Giuliani’s marital situation also puts him out of communion. I am not sure what the point is of taking communion in a church whose beliefs you mock.

If he’s not going to do anything about it, Egan may as well keep his mouth shut.

Hmmmm...and which diocesan office gave Giuliani the hard-to-come-by, admit-bearer-only Papal Mass tickets, I wonder? If the Cardinal was seriously perturbed by the idea of Giuliani illicitly recieving communion why did he invite him in the first place?

HOw about we tax all churches?

Brilliant idea. Then all of the charitable work they do at no cost to you can then be paid for by people like you through higher taxes.

Cardinal Egan, you know full well that one receiving the sacraments without a proper confession and subsequent absolution is no good. Giuliani was simply going through the motions.

I really like Egan’s secrewt agreement with Guliani.

Similar to the secret treatment of Pedophile Priests.

What Crap!

It is a violation of Canon Law for anyone (layprson, priest, cardinal or pope) to give Communion to a person who is "obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin." This is not something which Cardinal Egan invented: it is something it is obligatory for him to enforce.

This means he must appeal to the person to renounce and repent the sin. (Something we all must do, friends: that's what the sacrament of Confession is for.) And if he refuses --- that's where the "obstinate" part comes in --- he must be refused Holy Communion for the good of his own soul: to prevent him from committing sacrilege.

The real scandal here is not that Rudy Giuliani has been chastised by his Bishop, but that something like 500 other 'Catholic' abortion-supporting politicians have not been similarly, and individually, called to task.

The Catholic Bishops of the United States, I am sorry to say, act as if they are above Canon Law: as if its requirements are purely optional.

Similar to the fact that in 1962 Pope John XXIII ruled that nobody with even a homosexual "tendency" would be admitted to the priesthood --- a ruling that was ignored by disobedient Bishops who, once again, acted as if they were above the rules of their own Church.

The fruit of that disobedience on the Bishops' part has been 40 years of ever-widening disobedience on the part of everybody else.

The problem is not that the Catholic Church is so awfully 'Catholic' --- that it has its laws and its lines of authority --- but that it is so often not Catholic "enough."

That is the pity and the shame.
