With Barack Obama drowning in Rev. Wright's waves, all Hillary really needs to do is keep her head down and show up on time to be endorsed today by NC Gov. Mike Easley. The last thing Clinton needs is to make a gaffe of her own.
Now let's grant that the one we're about to discuss ranks rather low on the Gaffe-o-meter. If Sniper-gate was a 6.2, this might be a 2.1. But this particular misstep does have the demerit of undercutting a major Clinton campaign theme. Hillary's strategy nowadays consists of appealing to middle- and lower-income voters. Call it the Beer-and-a-shot Shtick. She's a Gal of the People. Not snobby like those Obamas. You know, like Michelle, who complained to a group of women in a struggling area of Ohio about her difficulties in spending $10,000 a year for various lessons for her kids while paying off student loans for her sojourns at Princeton and Harvard.
But that's exactly the kind of mistake Hillary has made. Today's Good Morning America played a clip [date and place unidentified, but presumably from the IN or NC campaign trail] of Hillary saying this to a crowd:
HILLARY CLINTON: Some people say, "oh she is tough." Well, if you'd had my life, you'd be tough too.

Hillary pity party ping to Today show list.
How hard is it if somebody says "you're so tough" to say something like "Well, I just play the cards I've been dealt" or something?
But that's not in her character (such as it is).
How hard is it if somebody says “you’re so tough” to say something like “Well, I just play the cards I’ve been dealt” or something?
Or better yet, “I’ve had it very easy compared to the millions of Americans who have to struggle every day to make ends meet.”
Turn it around and show some empathy for the "little guy", instead of grasping for sympathy FROM him.
Of course, that would require actually HAVING some empathy for the "little guy", and we know how THAT search would turn out.
I agree that at first blush this doesn’t seem like a major gaffe.
However, as the remark-—and the gall of it-—settles in over time, I’m not so sure this won’t be as cutting as her other “I’m tough” stories-—taking sniper fire and so on.
This one really is salt in the wounds. It brings up so much, including all about “her life” that has to do with what she-—and the COUNTRY-—has been through with Flubba. IOW, not only is this statement arrogant and obscene on many different levels, it also reminds the nation of many of the reasons the Witch has gone through whatever hard times she thinks she’s suffered.
And those reasons, which also affected the nation, are avoidable for the rest of us if people will wake up and not vote for her.
OTOH, she may be making a calculated appeal for the “wronged little ole woman” vote.
Narcissists can't show empathy. It's not in them.
The only tough thing about Hitlery is the seat of her pantsuit. Now, THAT'S tough!
My bet is that she's incredibly nervous, and way overcoached.
She's nervous because she's not used to speaking among the peasants and being watched and recorded (I would be nervous, too, though you have to get over it at some point).
But she's also trying to remember all these rules and tips that her advisors are cramming into her, and she can't think about them all on-the-fly.
She remembers that she should laugh at this point, but not until a moment has passed, and then it sounds unnatural, because it IS.
Bill was soooo much better at doing all that, but smoothly.
if you don't care about my troubles, it's only because they haven't been explained to you properly yet.
Let me tell you about the time my grandfather took me duck hunting in the woods of Pennsylvania when I was a girl. He had just been laid off from his 20 cents-a-month job at the toothpaste factory, along with 800 other folks, and lemme tellya, the sniper fire was intense....
Other than being married for thirty years to a chronic philanderer, what about this woman’s life has been so hard?
Cry me a river, Hillary.
Shame on you Hillary! Shame, shame, shame!
sw
Other than Watergate, has she ever had a job? Does she have any managerial experience or any history of making good decisions?
OK where is the requisite “Leave Hillary Alone” girl.
That is all you need to know. She thinks she is constantly being wrong by not yet running the world. Hillary is a very selfish and angry women and payback time is coming if she ever gets control.
VRWC, moveon.org, Bill Richardson,
and you know the best evidence to support the contention that Bubba and Hillary are not racists?? They gave Ron Brown equal opportunity along with Vince Foster.
Wonder what preceded the remark as I took it to mean she withstood the arrows of the VRWC and the public humiliation of Monicagate which made her 'ready on day one' to take anything those big bad republicans will send her way.
“Cry me a Whitewater.”
LOL, Good one Mark!
