NASHVILLE, Tenn.- There was a deadly gunfight at a liquor store in Inglewood Saturday night. An armed robbery suspect was gunned down, after trying to rob the place. But it wasn't a police officer who took action.
None of the clerks in Sinkers Wine and Spirits had a gun to protect themselves, but they said they're thankful one of their customers did.
Sinkers Wine and Spirits lost some of their merchandise on Saturday night, but Clifford Baxter is hardly upset. He's just happy to have survived the gunfight that took place in his store over the weekend when two armed men tried to rob Sinkers late Saturday.
"I was in the back room, and came out and a man walked in with a pistol in his hand, and I went back to call 911," said Baxter.
Meanwhile, police said the suspects pointed a gun at store clerks and forced two customers to the ground. The would-be robbers probably didn't suspect that one of the customers would be carrying a gun nor that he would end up using it.
Baxter believes the customer and the suspects exchanged about ten gunshots. The would-be robbers tried to flee, but one of the men collapsed at the scene and died shortly after. Police said the citizen had a valid carry permit, and a right to protect himself.
"A citizen just like a police officer has the right to defend themselves or others, if they're in fear of death or serious bodily injury and that right extends to using deadly force," said Capt. David Imhof with Metro Police.
Even though the store was closed Sunday, Clifford Baxter had to come to work to clean up,
and while the workers at Sinkers are armed only with broken glass and a mop they're thankful one of their customer protected them with something more.
Metro police are still out looking for the other robbery suspect. They are also interviewing witnesses in the case to make sure the citizen's actions were justified. As for the workers at Sinkers who were unarmed at the time they said they have plans to protect themselves in the future.

I’m in the process of getting my license for concealed carry.
Ten shots fired and no good guys hurt.
Looks like the perp will be sink'n 6 feet under. Nice
I’m sure his relatives will be flooding out the crocodile tears saying that he was a good boy and shouldn’t have been shot. The gun control advocates will trot them out to demonstrate the evils of citizens being allowed to defend themselves.
Irrespective of a permit, people have a right to protect themselves. The question is, under the law, how does one exercise this separate right without a permit?
Lesson learned, not too late.
It would be fitting for Perp the Second to face life in prison on account of Perp the First assuming room temperature.
Heh,heh, heh,It looks like there was another”Sheepdog” on duty looking over and protecting the flock!
Good shooting, sir!
Good thing it wasn’t a cop who shot the robber, or we’d be hearing about “cold blooded murder” by the police. If the dead guy was black, Sharpton would be down in a heartbeat to stir things up.
The only downside to this is that some whiskey was lost.
The observation that the article studiously avoids any sort of description of either the deceased robber or his accomplice leads me to the conclusion that both were black.
When seconds count, the police are minutes away.
The customer deserves a case of 16 year old Scotch.
dont forget DLR on self defense stories...
Which is why I can't understand the position of most police forces on citizens carrying legally.
You'd think they'd rather show, mop up and move on than have to justify a shoot, fill out endless reports, turn in their weapon, be assigned to a desk, face a board of review, face the media, face the family who is filing a civil suit and possibly lose his job and possibly have to pay damages to said family.
Hey Officer! We're on YOUR side!
HEAR HEAR! (somebody explain that to Daley)
Adrenaline can cause people to make some less than perfect choices. The see and hear about their fellow officers making less than perfect choices when confronted with an armed opponent, and they consider themselves to be better trained than the average citizen with a gun. There is plenty of evidence of cops doing really stupid things that brings the training of some into question, but on average they might be right.
In the end an officer's job requires them to be somewhat suspicious of citizens. Sometimes it obviously gets out of control, but some suspicion is a necessary part of doing their job.
That makes them a bad choice for a reasonable opinion about issues like self defense. Their job predisposes them to be suspicious of everyone else. If you talk to them, most know that they are overly suspicious, but it still can be difficult for them to step outside that suspicion and look at things from the point of view of a law abiding citizen.

Capt. David Imhof with Metro Police, He's our man!
Someone in Metro who has a clue.
In other news today, an armed right wing extremist went on a shooting rampage at Sinker's wine and spirits liquor store. Tragically, one armed bystander was killed.
Editorial at eleven....

Someone go high-5 Capt. David Imhof with Metro Police, and buy him a beer and a steak dinner. I’d do it myself, if I were local.
“A citizen just like a police officer has the right to defend themselves or others, if they’re in fear of death or serious bodily injury and that right extends to using deadly force.”
That is one of the most sense-laden statements by a LEO I have ever seen in the wake of a self-defense shooting.
Oh, and do the same for the citizen.
What???? Since none of the witnesses have holes in their bodies and a robber is dead seems justification enough to me.
I just love a happy ending.
*sniff*
Too bad one goblin got away. Maybe he bled out hiding behind a dumpster. (One hopes.)
That must be the NYC version.
Preferably not one destroyed by flying bullets.
This customer has done a service to storeowners and clerks all over the city. Robbers will be a little less eager to go into a store. Even if they have determined that the clerks are unarmed, because of company policy, maybe, they don’t know about customers or passersby and now they know that they don’t know.
When I first read this response I thought you wrote, "The Customer deserves a sixteen year old AND a case of Scotch"
Gotta wait until I am fully awake to read some of these.
Capt. Imhof seems to "get it" concerning armed civilian and is willing to say it in public. Too bad that so many of the other thousands of high level cops don't get it. Many of the cops on the street "get it", but the top ranking cops owe their jobs to liberal mayors and police commissioners and can't admit what they probably know is true without paying a price.
Perhaps the perpetrators were using the trendy and useless GANKSTA style sideways grip and target acquisition, thus insuring no rounds on target.
The good guy did the right thing.
I've never fired a round holding a weapon in that pose, but I would guess that one-handing it sideways while tensed for recoil would cause most of your rounds to fall right of the target.
Luckily for us shook ones, that posture is so darn stylish.
Aaawwwww, another happy ending!!!! : )
Though I did have to pay five bucks for the destruction of the target hanger.
At least my Ruger does.
