The Austrian children kept in a cellar for their entire lives speak their own language using animalistic noises rather than words. Stefan Fritzl, 18, and his brother Felix, five, learned to talk by watching a television in the dungeon where they were held with their mother Elisabeth Fritzl, 42.

While all of this is appalling and the father/grandfather is truly a monster, I don't understand why they can't talk properly. They were able to hear their mother speak and hear speech on TV as well. After seeing pre-schoolers from other countries able to speak accent-free English within a couple of years after getting here (apparently from watching TV), it seems strange that the 18 year old would have trouble speaking. Are there other factors - physical abuse, brain damage, etc?

Maybe the inbreeding has had an effect? I agree with another poster - These kids will be studied intensively and will never have even close to a normal life.

” Are there other factors - physical abuse, brain damage, etc?”

You mean, besides the same man being the father and grandfather?

That’s what I’m thinking too. It sounds like mom tried to teach her kids language and reading. But I wonder, after so many years in their hole, if she just gave up?? (And not blaming the mom in any way). Also, if all there is to do is eat, sleep, go potty and watch TV, how much language does one really need?

I can’t imagine the horror.

The quote that got me was when the little boy looked up at the moon and asked “Is that God?”

Obviously it was not all grunts, and that he had learned about God somehow. And mom must have taken good care of them to survive that long in such terrible conditions.

Limited exposure to objects in life may have not required much speech.

Another thought not being able to physically experience things like sun, drive, wind left no need for verbalizing.

I wondered the same thing as you. I’m thinking it might have something to do with the lack of air. I read that the investigators could only work in the cellar for an hour at a time because of the lack of air, so perhaps they did have a lack of oxygen.

Only time and many, many medical examinations will really tell the truth. The sad thing for these poor children is that they were captive for years by their monster “father” and now they will be captive to all the academics and scientists who will want to study them.
