Chavez orders expropriation of Venezuela's largest steel maker

President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday ordered the expropriation of Venezuela's largest steel maker after attempts by the government to acquire a majority stake in the company failed.

Venezuela's government will turn Siderurgica del Orinoco, which was controlled by Luxembourg-based Ternium SA., into "a socialist company," Chavez told workers gathered at a Caracas theater.

Sidor, as the company is known, "has now recuperated by the revolutionary government," Chavez said.

Since winning re-election in 2006 on promises to steer his country toward socialism, Chavez has made nationalizing major industries a top priority.

His government last year seized majority control of the country's largest telecommunications and electricity companies, and of joint oil ventures run by some of the world's largest oil companies. Earlier this month, he announced plans to nationalize cement companies including Mexico's Cemex SAB, France's Lafarge SA and Switzerland's Holcim Ltd.

Chavez ordered Sidor nationalized earlier this month, siding with workers who sought improved salaries and benefits. Venezuelan officials had been talking with Ternium representatives to negotiate a price for its 60 percent share in the company, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement.

Is this the company that is controlled by Russian mafioso, or is that a different company?

Oh, yeah. Marx was right - not about running factories with Workers' Soviets, but when he said that history becomes farce the second time through. Huey should take a look at what became of Lenin's attempt to do this sort of thing. It lasted about 18 months and nearly broke the country.

When we invaded Iraq there was talk about not being able to sell the oil because there might be some question about the legal title to it. Why isn’t the output from stolen Venezuelan companies considered stolen?

It is now past time for someone to do a bit of “wetwork” on this power crazed junior Castro, and sanction his a$$ with the most extreme prejudice.

Quite frankly, if I had the means - the equipment - I would happily volunteer for the task.

Not that they would list that information with EDGAR but I’ve not heard that.

IIRC, it was Rep Waxman who said oil for reconstruction without UN SC resolution may be illegal. But all proceeds should (but isn't) go into a coffer and alloted for IRAQI use. It pays for salaries, reconstruction, etc. There's mismanagement of those funds, and not enough offsetting US taxpayer contributions.

So, the money from Iraq is going into Iraq, not “stolen.” It's capital building wealth, as opposed to Chavez stealing wealth and not creating other wealth. IIRC, there's been plenty of international laws on expropriation.

If you haven't followed it, Hugito is running PDVSA, the state oil company, right into the ground also.

Bullet day is less than 3 years away.

Hugito, la primera dama de Cuba.

Or, as Bugs Bunny would put it, ''What a ma-ROON!''.

I'm extremely disappointed with EVIL BIG OIL and BIG STEEL. They let this two bit thug steal from them and yet he's still breathing. Shameful!

I remember when EVIL BIG OIL would do wet work on lone inventors to snuff out them and their 100MPG carbs, and now Chavez takes all their stuff and nothing. Sigh... :)

Due to expanded communication capability in today’s world, Chavez cannot do this. The Church, however, IS already suffering under him and will continue to suffer there....just as the majority of the Venezuelan people are suffering.

<——[thumbing through his phone book finding the names of all the Petroleum companies summarily expropriated by Chavez and his henchmen, and the names of the execs and supervisors who were, along with their wives and children, escorted at gunpoint out of their homes and offices, and off of land they legally, rightfully owned...]

brrring!:

“hello mr. Evil BigOil Exec - listen - I have what should prove to be an interesting proposition for you. Yes, mmm-hmmm, about this tinhorn, mr. chavez.”

“Wellllll - let me just ask you, how many of your firearms-owning former employees would enjoy a scenic excursion to beautiful Venezuela..? on the ‘Q-T’, of course...”

“Well yes, it is nice of you to offer the use of your retrofitted corporate jet and helicopter, thank you. I believe those would be - mmmm - handy. My bank account number? Well, which would you rather - the one in Zurich or the one in the Grand Cayman Islands? Zurich? Ohhh - you know Dieter too? Isn’t that a happy coincidence!”

“A replacement for Hugo? Well, gosh I don’t know - who do you recommend? Yes, yes - I know - a trained chimp COULD do a much better job than he has...of course.”

“We’ll be in touch again soon - yes, thanks - you too. Have a nice day!”
