THE BLACK CHURCH | On the verge of making history, Obama opens a can of worms
The Chicago Sun-Times ^ | April 30, 2008 | Mary Mitchell

Well, it is likely that Sen. Barack Obama won't be going back to Trinity United Church of Christ.

Not after this.

On Tuesday, Obama responded to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's ill-timed defense by condemning his former pastor's fresh comments as "ridiculous," "outrageous" and "appalling."

"When he states and then amplifies such ridiculous proposition as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS, when he suggests that Minister Farrakhan somehow represents one of the greatest voices in the 20th and 21st century, when he equates the United States wartime effort with terrorism, then there are no excuses," Obama said during a press conference.

"They offend me. They rightfully offend all Americans and they should be denounced," Obama said.

This is a sad day for Black America.

At a time when African Americans are on the cusp of watching a barrier come crashing down, up jumps a divisive issue that is being driven by those outside of the black community.

Obviously, Wright's timing for a press conference about his sermons couldn't have been worse.

Still, when Obama says he is "offended" by Wright's latest comments -- given in defense against an orchestrated assault on his character and on his ministry -- he's opening up a can of worms.

There is no institution in the black community more respected than the black church. And the notion that white pundits can dictate what constitutes unacceptable speech in the black church is repulsive to most black people.

Even so, after Wright's fiery speeches surfaced on the Internet, most African Americans understood why Obama had to distance himself from Wright.

Obama's cross-cultural appeal, which, by the way, made some blacks suspicious of him early in his campaign, is largely because of his ability to make white people feel comfortable with his blackness.

But Wright speaks to a different audience, and that audience has been supportive throughout his ordeal.

On Monday, for instance, when Wright spoke at the National Press Club, the predominantly black crowd cheered, clapped and punctuated Wright's speech with shouts of "amen."

So, when Obama says America was "offended" by Wright's harsh language, he isn't speaking for or to Black America. He is speaking to White America.

As much as I want to see Obama make history by becoming the first black man to be elected president, I don't want to see a warrior like Wright denigrated to prove to white voters that Obama is not a radical.

When Obama denounced Wright's angry words but refused to disown him, it signaled that he understood the sensitive tightrope he is being forced to walk.

His "outrage" over Wright's latest remarks signals something quite different. With the gap narrowing, Obama advisers are obviously scrambling for every white vote.

But really, what more should blacks have to sacrifice? Their dignity?

Frankly, Obama and Wright risk becoming metaphors for the ongoing struggle of blacks to unite politically.

Obama shouldn't have held a press conference to deal with Wright.

He should have been able to pick up the phone.

If someone had predicted all of this a year ago, they'd have been committed to an institution or at a minimum, laughed out of the room. So it's "whitey's" fault that Barack Hussein Obama had to denounce Jeremiah Wright? That is rich!

The author assumes this cheering section, including Nation of Islam, represents black Americans.

Wrong. And the silver lining here is they've been exposed, and set back in their goal to be the Black Church, which they never were.

Black have their racists too. And strangly they too wear robs while they do their dirty work. Racism is a nasty thing no matter where you find it. The media has given these racists a free pass for far to long. Special treatment for any group should no longer be tolerated. the time for tolerating the intolerable is past and the time of equality is apoun us. Every individual should be treated the same before the law.

What does this mean? Call whom--Wright? What good would that have done; the object was to propagate the idea that Obama disagrees with Wright's outrageous pronouncements. So he had to use the media.

IMHO, Obama has hurt himself far more than he’s helped himself by his ‘condemnation’ of Rev. Wright.

It’s not likely to change his perceived radical leanings to undecided voters, and now he looks like (and IMHO, *is*) an opportunist who will throw his “spiritual mentor” and anyone else under the bus to save his own skin.

Just my opinion, though. I might be wrong. :-)

I agree with you. Reading the article highlights the convoluted attempt at logic that anyone on the Left must use to justify their destructive actions. It once again points out the level of mental illness they suffer.

Minister Farrakhan

The fact that BHO still uses the title Minister to refer this vile P.O.S. tells me he still doesn't have a clue.

"There is no institution in the black community more respected than the black church. And the notion that white pundits can dictate what constitutes unacceptable speech in the black church is repulsive to most black people." Does that mean that the "black community" supports the type of speech demonstrated by Wright? I thought preachers talked about brotherhood and love of ones fellow man....go figure.....

"And the notion that white pundits can dictate what constitutes unacceptable speech in the black church is repulsive to most black people."

So then I guess if we flipped the switch and found out that John McCain's preacher at his little Baptist Church was glorifying Jim Crow and God setting in order how things ought to be and using the "N" word in the pulpit you would be okay with that. Right? Yeah, this author would be one of the first ones out there condemning McCain for associating with the preacher.

I refuse to believe that educated black people agree with this nut. I believe having worked many professionals that also happen to be black that many black people are silent on political issues.

Professional blacks have no more in common with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Rev. Rong than they do with David Duke. However after 20 years of seeing how conservative blacks are treated by these so called leaders, they have learned to keep their mouths shut.

Blacks are less free now than they were 40 years ago. However the masters have changed. They lack the money and power base to fight The charletons such as Rev Rong. They have seen how Clarence Thomas and others have been treated - not by whites but by blacks. Freedom of speech is only allowed if you are attacking white people and are backing the so called black leaders.

So, the best time would have been the week after the election... when President nObama announces his Executive Order that all those typical white people's income will be garnished until all slavery reparations have been paid in full, eh?

Jeramiahd is a racist buffon. After his claptrap about black and white children’s brains and their differential learning styles, I expected him to haul out quotes from Afro-Racists Frances Cress Welsing with her melanin theories about White supremacy, which according to Welsing, began with the birth of albinos in Africa. These “recessive genetic mutants” began to mate with one another and multiply, producing what is now known as the white race.

Besides masking their African origin and proclaiming their affinity with Greece, whites avoid the true meaning of skin whiteness: “a mutation and genetic deficiency state from the Black norm, ‘hue-man’ norm.” White supremacy is a psychological defense mechanism to genetic color inadequacy (whiteness). Dr. Welsing believes whites are “genetically vulnerable,” and therefore overcompensate for their insecurity with oppressive behavior towards people of color. Or Leonard Jefferies, who believes that White people are Ice People who slunk around in the caves of NW Europe untill the black man came along to enlighten them. Wright has appeared with these two at various conferences and venues to add his own supplement to this Afro-Racist drivel.
