Pa. senator says slavery would pass in a secret ballot

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A state senator told a black pastor testifying at a committee hearing that, given the chance to cast secret ballots, his fellow legislators would vote to legalize slavery.

Sen. Vincent J. Fumo, D-Philadelphia, made the comments Tuesday during a hearing on a Republican-sponsored bill to amend the state Constitution to outlaw same-sex marriages and civil unions, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on its Web site Wednesday.

“What you are advocating here is that we take away the rights of a minority. And I don’t think that’s right,” Fumo, a staunch defender of gay rights, told the witness, Gilbert Coleman Jr., senior pastor of Freedom Christian Bible Fellowship in Philadelphia.

He added, “If we introduced a bill on slavery, it might pass. That doesn’t make it right.”

Coleman, who was testifying in favor of the measure, responded: “I doubt that sir.” “Oh, don’t bet on it in this General Assembly,” Fumo countered. “I know some people up here, especially on a secret ballot, it would be almost unanimous.”

Fumo declined to comment Wednesday, but said he would release a statement through his spokesman later in the day.

Fumo, who is white, is in his last months in office after a 30-year career as a state senator. He decided not to seek re-election because of pending federal corruption charges that accuse him of using his state staff for personal and outside work.

The Senate Appropriations Committee could vote on the gay marriage measure as early as Monday.

A committee member, Sen. Pat Browne, R-Lehigh, said Fumo lost control of his emotions.

Asked whether Fumo owes an apology to his fellow lawmakers, Browne said, “If he is serious about those comments, then yes he does.”

In a lot of the cities where they live, they're not allowed to own guns, but it's not because they're gay.

Forcing a subordinate staff member to become your personal servant is as close to slavery as we have in this day and age. Seems as though he is projecting his own thoughts and feelings to his peers.

But he's correct. There's always been a substantial number of peple in PA's legislature who would vote for out and out slavery. They certainly vote for totalitarian traffic enforcement standards (which are never enforced), and hard core taxes, so why not simple slavery?!

Exactly.

Homosexuals have EXACTLY the same rights to marry another person as heterosexuals.

My favorite is the hospital visitation sham, I am still waiting for someone to give me the name of a single hospital anywhere in the country that prohibits a homosexual’s partner from visiting.

“No one has a right to be married.”

Yes, they do. Just because a right is not listed in the Constitution does not mean that it does not exist. It says so in the Constitution itself. The Constitution does not say that you have the right to have children, or the right to buy land, or the right to own property, or the right to live in any state you choose, but those rights undoubtedly exist.

However, the states have the power to recognize or not recognize marriages based on what the states laws and constitutions say.

Slavery is just very poor economics.

But it is a natural outgrowth of the government, or some elite group, assuming full responsibility for the welfare of individuals, dictating their actions from birth to where, when and how they shall die.

Trouble with slavery is, that the individual placed in the box at a very early age, who does not fit the mold, keeps breaking the expectations. These are the individuals that either cause society as a whole to advance, and bring higher and higher levels of civilization to the world, or they break the existing society and take everybody back to a state of far less reliance on the accrued wisdom of the ages, essentially destroying the accomplishments and grandeur of the past.

Is there slavery today? Yes. Every illegal immigrant who pours over into a neighboring country today is essentially bonding himself or herself out at indenture, voluntary or otherwise. Human trafficking all over the world keeps houshold help, sexual objects and poorly compensated individuals tied to a position that often is FAR less then their potential and the world is the poorer for that artificial constraint.
