Stop Apologizing for Being an American
Townhall.com ^ | May 2, 2008 | John Hawkins

Posted on 05/02/2008 4:13:58 AM PDT by Kaslin

A couple of days ago, I had the misfortune of being on a BBC radio show with an American college professor who sounded like he had read one too many Noam Chomsky books.

Let me give you a short impression of the guy: "Blah, blah, blah, racists! Blah, blah, blah, of course Jeremiah Wright was right when he said...blah, blah, blah. No wonder people are angry at America!"

Not to disagree with Professor Crabby McCommiePuss, but there is no nation in the world that has more to be proud of and less to apologize for than the United States of America.

Of course, the standard liberal reply to that usually goes something like this: "So, you're saying 'we're perfect,' huh? Well, what about slavery and the Indians and dropping A-bombs in WWII and the other 497 things on my 'What I Hate About America' list?"

What about them?

Men have been enslaving other men for thousands of years. It's nothing new. What was new was a nation so disgusted by the practice that they fought a Civil War to put an end to it.

But, what about the Indians? Sure, we took their land and treated them brutally. However, my friend, that's just the history of the world. There probably is not a square yard of earth on the map that wasn't taken by force from one group of people by another group at one time or another.

As to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, given the fanatical tenacity with which the Japanese had been holding on, we probably saved hundreds of thousands of civilian lives by dropping those bombs rather than invading the mainland. Much more importantly, we saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of American soldiers who had risked their lives to protect their country and free the world from the Nazi/Japanese vision of the future, which was as George Orwell described it, a "boot stamping on a human face - forever."

We could go on and on with these "The glass is half full! No, it isn't, it's half empty" examples, but why should we do that when we can consider all the good America has done in the world during it's historically short reign as a super power.

We've saved the free world from tyranny in the 20th century not once (WWI), not twice (WWII), but three times (the Cold War). We've done more to promote capitalism and democracy than any other 20 nations combined. We've gone to the moon, we've fed the world, and we've fought more tyrants, terrorists, and thugs than any comic book super-hero. Speaking of comic book super heroes, American gets the same sort of "Daily Bugle" treatment that Spider-Man did in the comics and the movies. We shed our blood and treasure by the bucket load to do good and the headlines in the paper read, "Out-of-Control Menace Terrorizes Populace!

Probably the best example of this is the topsy-turvy world interpretation of the events that led up to 9/11. It goes all the way back to when the Soviets waged a war of conquest on Afghanistan. Of course, when the bad guys are kicking in your door, who ya gonna call? The United States, of course -- and we delivered. We gave billions of dollars' worth of aid and weaponry to the Mujahideen, which they used to drive the Soviets out of their country. Then, a little later on, when the Afghan people were starving, which country was supplying most of their food even though we weren't particularly friendly with their government or their pals Al-Qaeda? That's right, the United States. Sure, we could have pointed to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and said, "Afghanistan isn't friendly to us, so let them starve," but we didn't do that because we're a compassionate people. Then, the terrorists based in Afghanistan pull off 9/11 and what's the liberal/European reaction? "The chickens have come home to roost" or alternately, some variation of Amos Brown's comments,

"America, America. What did you do--either intentionally or unintentionally--in the world order, in Central America, in Africa where bombs are still blasting? America, what did you do in the global warming conference when you did not embrace the smaller nations? America, what did you do two weeks ago when I stood at the world conference on racism, when you wouldn't show up? Oh, America, what did you do?"

What did America do? America helped Afghanistan drive out the Soviet Union, we fed them; then they repaid the favor by bombing the WTC and Pentagon. After that, instead of walking in there and killing everything that moved, we responded by getting rid of the tyrants that ran their country, giving them billions in aid and installing a democracy which has been defended with the lives of American soldiers. Moreover, this is not an aberration; it's typical of American behavior since the start of the 20th century.

But, instead of thanks, we get grumbling, complaining, and snark not just from people who live in nations that are only free and prosperous because of our help, but from people who've managed to make wonderful lives for themselves in this country.

Yes, we live in a country where celebrities who've become rich and famous sneer at the country that gave them that opportunity, where college professors teach their students that the country that's given them an opportunity to get an education is evil, and where small patriotic gestures like saying the Pledge of Allegiance or wearing a flag pin are considered anathema by many people on the Left.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm sick of it. As far as I'm concerned, America, along with capitalism and Christianity has been one of the greatest forces for good the world has seen in centuries. Moreover, Americans have no need to apologize because our ancestors did something we sneer at today in the civilized nation they helped bring about -- because we're prosperous or because some snobbish liberal or foreigner doesn't like us.

Quite frankly, if you think America is a terrible country or isn't an incredible force for good in the world, you're either stupid, ignorant, hoodwinked, blinded, crazy, or liberal, which all too often, turns out to be a combination of all five of those characteristics.

A fine rant but...”you’re either stupid, ignorant, hoodwinked, blinded, crazy, or liberal, which all too often, turns out to be a combination of all five of those characteristics.”
...that’s six characteristics to a math major!

Six, or a hundred and six ... there are doubtless many reasons why jerkwaters like "Professor Crabby McCommiePuss", and their devotees spew this hate America crap.

You can bet your bottom dollar that of those many reasons are not Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I would have had a hard time, not cold-cocking Professor Crabby McCommiePuss, and leaving him in crumpled world of hurt in a pile, on the floor.

I think he’s saying that liberal must include one or more of the five characteristics... stupid, ignorant, hoodwinked, blinded, crazy. Usually all five.

This is a letter I wrote to my Pastor after his Beat up whitey Rantings, It was disgusting.

Dear Pastor Stowell,

I am absolutely positive that you are not shocked that I am writing, we have had this conversation about illegal immigration before. What I am particularly astounded at is your willingness to beat up on “WHITEY”

I mean even though I am a woman of Mexican decent, we Mexicans are white. I am really tired of being beat up on because I am white. After I got home Saturday, I was particularly beaten down by your sarcastic name calling and labeling.

Truthfully though you are to late. My reputation has already been dragged through the mud and I like Attorney Kris Kobach (assistant to Former Attorney General John Ashcroft) who are credible American conservative loving Christians have been dragged through the mud by the best of them. Pro-illegal alien Communist leaning groups have beat you to the punch, Sorry to inform you.

http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?pid=1532

I particularly noticed how hard you were on people like me and “oh doesn’t make you mad when they cut in line?” Comment about illegal aliens.

The scales were pretty tipped. Who have you been talking to Pastor Stowell? In fact I am absolutely devastated and dismayed at your willingness to turn a blind eye to the devastation happening in this country. Either address it evenly or don’t address it at all. Quit giving a FREE pass to people who are disrespecting this country.

It sounds to me like you have been listening to all one side of the coin, I would welcome the chance to sit down with you and tell you some of the facts I know, that will break your heart. It is time for you to be fully informed if you are going to go around and address this issue of illegal immigration. The least you could do is to get yourself fully informed so you can give an informed opinion. Being one sided doesn’t cut it Pastor Stowell, you are given more credit than that and people expect alot more from you!

I am proud to stand in the face of wrong doing and tell the truth. If you read the smear job on me in this article I linked, now I am wondering if you believe it? Do you believe I am a hate monger Pastor Stowell, or part of a HATE GROUP? Or do you see it for what it is? I am honored to stand for all of the people who have suffered greatly, lost homes, jobs and senior citizens who have payed the price and felt the affects of illegal immigration, my eyes have been opened to them and their suffering.

I continue to stand with many Christians in this battle for the sovereignty of our nation. The huge communist element in these groups do not preach Christ, but instead preach “MARXIST LIBERATION THEOLOGY”

Pastor Stowell, with all due respect, I do not have what it takes to preach a sermon, and may I suggest Pastor that you do not know the facts and the toll of devastation Americans (Black, white Hispanic, Asian) have incurred at the hands of illegal immigration. Because if you knew, I am sure you would address this great atrocity.

The part I missed in your sermon was when Christ pointed out the woman’s sin, You did an excellent job on beating up on WHITEY but you never got around to pointing out the sin of the illegal aliens, you glossed over it.

You talked about the ministry Harvest has for illegal aliens. That’s great I agree, your sarcasm was not. To think you know the hearts of conservative Republicans and can lash out at us like you did....there are no words to describe. Yeah go ahead lump us all together! We are all the same! Hate Mongers! In fact I must hate myself, after all I am of Mexican decent. Come on Doctor Stowell.

I could have even taken 50 percent reprimand to illegal immigration to 50 percent to Folks who you think come from an intolerant heart, but it did not happen. So, your harsh words and sarcasm I took as approving of stealing, lying and cheating and families being devastated. I never thought I would see the day that you would make light of this kind of sin.

Well I guess since you are leaving, this is open season to use the Harvest Bible pulpit for your political rantings. It is an abuse of a powerful place, the Harvest Bible Chapel Pulpit.

By the way, I wonder why our public school kids are stealing, committing suicide, and killing each other?? Maybe, when they see society turn a blind eye to illegal aliens and all the devastation that has gone with it, they figure it is OK to do what ever they please with no consequences.

Well if you haven’t deleted this email by now, from some Right Wing, Republican, intolerant hate mongering Mexican .....congratulations.

I had the honor of meeting and testifying in Washington D.C. along side James Edwards Jr. Who gave a compelling paper on an Evangelical view on illegal immigration and Biblical principles, I have included it for you.

Yep, and a slightly different punctuation would have helped, to separate liberal and take us to the punch line. Nevertheless, an excellent rant and we all have need of its ammunition! I hear anti-American rubbish every day from someone or another or both! :)

Rush Limbaugh yesterday (Thursday) had a rant about why blacks vote Democrat despite what the Dims have done to them over time. They blindly vote that way at their own peril. The same “you’re either stupid, ignorant, hoodwinked, blinded, crazy, or liberal, which all too often, turns out to be a combination of all five of those characteristics” rant can be applied to why blacks vote Democrat. And those voting on the left side are the ones who complain the loudest about who they vote for. If they were smart, they would pay attention to Obama and vote for change and get the Dims out of congress.

People around the world don’t hate America. The left and the Islamo-nazis around the world hate America. In the last few years the people in dountires with previously leftist/anti-American governments have elected pro-American governments in Germany, Japan, South Korea, France(!!!), Italy and Canada, to name just a few. And oh yeah, Iraq and Afghanistan. Yep, they sure hate us.

The fact that people keep coming here in droves, legally and illegally, tells me that things can't be all that bad here. It reminds me of a graduate student we had in our department from Iran who was over here during the hostage crises and when Kiermeni and his thugs were consolidating their power. This guy would go on and on about “evil” America and how bad it was and how terrible it was to support the Shah, blah blah blah. Then something happened to him. He graduated. His student visa was invalidated. He couldn't get a job. Faced with the prospect of deportation back to his wonderful homeland from this terrible, evil country, he filed for political asylum. When that was denied, he filed suit against the INS for the right to stay here. Interesting case, no? This was such a terrible place, until it came time to leave it and go home. Then things were different. I wonder why?

To most of the ignorant left wing gasheads, America is a force for evil. Yet imagine a world in which we did not exist. It would be a much poorer and backwards world. Has anyone calculated a dollar amount for how much money we have given, in terms of charity and economic development, to the world? The amounts would be staggering. Perhaps so high it could not be calculated. Yet to the elites we are the bad guy. How they miss the old USSR. And I suspect their elitism and dislike for the USA will persist even after one of their own is in the White House.

My nephew went to Germany a few years ago (just after Bush was reelected) and the Germans were giving him a lot of grief. They could not understand how America could elect such a leader.

He said that he had just visited the Jewish death camps and he didn’t think that they had much room to talk about electing leaders.

They didn’t give him any more flak for the rest of the trip!

Think of every major world disaster in the last 50 years and the US was on the forefront of giving aid. When the tsunami struck in SE Asia affecting many predominately Muslim countries where were the Muslim charities? How many millions of dollars were raised and donated by the ordinary people of Iran, Saudi Arabia etc.? Compare that to the amount of aid from foreign countries, especially Muslim ones, that "poured in" to help the victims of hurricane Katrina.

If the US is such a pariah in the world maybe the next time there is an earthquake, tsunami or other major world disaster the US should just stay home.
