What Bill O'Reilly Did for Hillary Clinton
New York Observer ^ | May 1, 2008 | Steve Kornacki

Posted on 05/02/2008 9:33:23 AM PDT by kingattax

Independents and Republicans are free to vote in next Tuesday’s Indiana Democratic primary – the latest do-or-die test for Hillary Clinton. And Independents and Republicans – along with a healthy dose of Archie Bunker Democrats and a scattering of masochistic liberals – also constitute the core of Bill O’Reilly audience. So, in a way, her appearance on his show Wednesday night was a logical exercise in voter outreach.

But that’s only if you ignore history. O’Reilly, whose Fox News program debuted (in a different time slot and with precious few viewers) way back in 1996, has spent the better part of the last decade telling his flock that Clinton and her husband are to be considered ideological and cultural enemies. And Clinton, the woman who defiantly lashed out against “a vast right-wing conspiracy” in 1998, mostly embraced that hostility, knowing that it only made her – and her husband – more popular within her own party.

And yet there she was on Wednesday, sitting down with the self-proclaimed “culture warrior” for a hastily arranged and wide-ranging interview that was taped in South Bend earlier in the day. O’Reilly’s introduction to the interview, which will air over two nights, pretty much explained the Clinton campaign’s rationale: The campaign, he said, contacted his staff on Monday morning with word that – after years of shunning him – she’d be happy to carve out an hour for him on Wednesday morning. Thus it was Clinton herself who sought a spot in “the no spin zone.”

The reason can be spelled out in two words: Reverend Wright.

O’Reilly called him “a loon” several times tonight and for months, along with other Fox News hosts, has feverishly highlighted the retired minister’s most inflammatory words, elevating Wright – and, by extension, Obama – onto a level of cultural enemy-hood in the O’Reilly universe that even the Clintons never approached. The Clinton campaign, remember, called O’Reilly on Monday, just as Wright was forcing his way onto the front page of every newspaper in the country.

If there was any doubt over the very specific purpose of Clinton’s visit, she erased it right away.

“Do you believe this Reverend Wright guy?” O’Reilly asked.

“I’m going to leave it up to the voters to decide,” Clinton replied.

Wright isn’t on the ballot. But her point was clear enough.

She went on: “I take offense at [Wright’s words]. I think it’s offensive and outrageous…it is part of just an atmosphere that we’re in today, where just all kinds of things are being said and people have to decide what they believe. And I sure don’t believe the U.S. government was behind AIDS.”

This went farther than Clinton has previously ventured. Weeks ago, she went out of her way to make clear that she would not have been a member of Wright’s church, but she mostly left Obama to sort out his own mess. That she picked O’Reilly’s forum to broadcast the explicit suggestion that voters should use Wright’s words to judge Obama speaks volumes.

After Clinton took a few more shots at Wright, O’Reilly expressed some backhanded sympathy for Obama, asserting that “his whole campaign has been derailed by some loony guy” and asked Clinton if she, too, felt sorry for her foe. Not surprisingly, she didn’t answer. At this point, O’Reilly was doing her work for her.

Of course, Clinton paid a price for going on, too. Having accomplished what she wanted to with the Wright question, she then had to deal with all manner of scattershot and self-absorbed questions from O’Reilly. He asked her if she was aware that she would “bankrupt the country with HillCare” and informed her that her plan would force him to pay for health care for “someone who’s taking heroin and drinking a bottle of gin a day.” He also demanded to know the details of his own personal tax bill under a Clinton presidency.

On these topics, the old battle lines that made O’Reilly and Clinton natural enemies for years were clear. Clinton defended herself spiritedly, bantering playfully with her inquisitor and even working sly praise for Ronald Reagan into one of her responses.

But this was all secondary. The purpose of Clinton’s visit wasn’t to win over O’Reilly on health care or taxes or energy policy. Her goal is merely to make sure that O’Reilly's audience – which doesn’t have a Republican primary to vote in these days – feels like she’s like them in a way that Obama isn’t.

It’s funny what a common enemy can do to even the most entrenched antagonists

Oh good gried, the liberal MSM are simply hysterical.

No one on the Right will vote for Hillary Clinton because she appeared with BO, or will vote for her because of Wright.

What nonsense.

I stopped watching him years ago. And when he had the audacity to go after Freep, I wrote him off completely. To paraphrase the Sopranos, I’m sure he had his head so far up Hillary’s b**t she could taste Brylcreem.

"Well at least he got Archie Bunker right even though that boob Lear had him portrayed as a Repub."

I am stunned by the number of people who seem to think that the positions of the parties somehow reversed when it came to the question of race. As if somehow all of the Dixiecrat racists had switched parties without catching too many people's attention. The bigotted racists always were, and still are - the Democrats. The Republican position has not changed one iota, it has always favored self-reliance and personal responsiblity for all citizens regardless of race.

This is why Republicans are against socialist programs, they prefer for people to take responsibility for themselves and their own lives not because they want 'to keep the black man down' as the Democrats claim. Such a claim, in and of itself promotes racist values. Unfortunately, far too many Americans have been fed this bile for so long they cannot taste how bitter it is.

Whenever I hear such claims, I immediately stop what I'm doing and give the people a lecture on the difference between socialist programs and personal responsibility and how it relates to race and our two parties. Every time I explain it properly I am greeted with wide eyed understanding and people who say "wow, now I understand what's going on between the two parties perfectly. The things which had confused me before make sense once you drew the line there instead of along racial lines."

Why MSM types love the Clintons:

Their daily scandals provide perfect fodder for the sensationalist news that diverts us from the real issues of our times(Anna Nicole, Jacko, Natalie Holloway, on and on)

Plus, they would sell out anyone or anything, say or do anything for their own gain. No wonder self-serving whores like O’Reilly suck up to them whe it suits him. Not only does he get a scoop, they are kindred spirits

I’m sure there are other reasons too

Even though I despise the woman I thought it was a good interview. She would have never come on FOX if she was in the lead. I know in her own mind she thinks she is having to crawl on her hands and knees by going on evil FOX. Too funny. Hey, Hillary too little to late.

For what it is worth, I saw part of this program last night before I turned it off…Hillary made me ill. Bill was not weak. He was being polite which in too many cases politeness is considered a weakness. I don’t remember the questions, but Bill asked the witch a question which she skirted. He asked it a second time in a different way and she skirted it again. Therefore, he went on to the next question.

Bill considers his viewers as intelligent who could see through her continuous charade. Don’t come down on Bill. He does not consider us morons.

He did not have her on his program to insult her. It was so we see her raw and ugly.

Yeah. He spent more time after the interview asking other guests to critique how HE did. That was seriously weird, Bill....

I love O’Reilly threads. They always show the similarities between DU and FR. Weird fringers whose heads almost explode everytime they hear something that doesn’t fit their narrow, twisted, minority ideology.

It was a good interview on the highest rated cable news program in America.

Maybe you should post this in a form letter so we can all spout it and distribute it. That must be the key, telling them how it is because they sure can’t answer any questions! Especially, why are you democrat. The vast majority are because they were told to be. That is all they know.

I also turned it off.

O'Reilly is one of the worst interviewers on TV. He doesn't ask softball questions ala Larry King. His problem is that he has never learned how to frame a simple, direct question. He tends to throw together five or six questions, and deliver them in one of his patented tirades. It is only too easy for a clever interviewee like Hillary to pick whichever of those questions she wants to answer, or even to ignore the silly questions altogether and just make a speech. Good interviewers also listen to the answer and follow up where appropriate. O'Reilly was too busy putting together his next speech/question to pay any attention to what Hillary said. I would give the portions of the interview I saw a D+ (the "plus" representing the fact that he did manage to get her on his show).

O’Reilly would do the same thing for Obama. Bill’s behavior is exactly what I expected it would be from a man that has been trying to land these types of interviews for years. A “tough but fair” interview. He wanted to do the same for Kerry. And in the future he will do the same to any major presidential candidate that wants to be on his show. It’s all about the ratings and ego for Bill.

“Even though I despise the woman I thought it was a good interview. “

I thought it was pretty good, also. Hillary has been almost as bad as Obama when she’s unscripted, and as much as I disagree with her, she certainly stood up for herself and didn’t back down, she didn’t stammer like Obama. O’Reilly did bring up the issue of socialism, she tried to dodge it by saying they said that about Teddy Roosevelt (did she REALLY say Teddy, I thought it was Franklin, but maybe both of them) O’Reilly said lots of people think he was a socialist, she said “I think he was a great American.” Very emphatically. I heard that as an admission, and an unashamed one, of her socialism. And I thought it was amazing that he got that out of her.

Actually not. She appeared first with Greta Van Susteren in an interview several weeks before Obama.

After years of professional coaching, and thousands of hours of spouting the same facts and figures ad nauseum , professional makeup, and very expensive hair and clothes, her performance was just that.....a well scripted and acted-out charade of candor and sincerity.
It was a sham.
