Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly/Nadeam Elshami 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 05/02/2008 Pelosi Statement on Disappointing April Jobs Report, Fourth Straight Month of Job Losses

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement this morning after the Department of Labor released its employment report for April showing a loss of 20,000 jobs, the fourth consecutive month of job losses:

“Today’s jobless numbers, combined with slowing consumer spending and nearly flat wage increases, are additional evidence of the need for Congress and the President to work in a bipartisan way on additional steps to get our economy back on track.

“Many Americans fear losing their jobs, many fear losing the homes; and most everyone is worried about losing their standard of living. The New Direction Congress has responded by passing Recovery Rebates, which millions of families are now receiving.

“We will soon act on comprehensive housing legislation that provides the most assistance to Americans of any plan yet to help them refinance and keep their homes. We should also extend unemployment insurance for Americans whose benefits will soon expire and offer additional food stamp assistance to families struggling with rising food costs. We are also calling on the President to act to combat record gas prices by halting the filling of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

“We urge the President to work with Democrats in Congress to speed economic recovery and to provide critical relief to American families.”

State of the Bush Economy

Job Losses: In April, Americans suffered the fourth straight month of job losses totaling 260,000 since the beginning of the year.

Unemployment: The number of unemployed Americans is at 7.6 million – 800,000 more than one year ago -- with 1.4 million of them looking for work for more than six months.

Energy: Gas prices are at a record $3.62 a gallon and the price of a barrel of oil spiked to a record $120 this week.

Food: Consumer food inflation has been running at a 5 percent annual rate in the past three months – with the largest price increases in white bread, up 16 percent in the past year; milk, which is up 13 percent; and eggs, up 35 percent.

Health Care: Since 2001, premiums for family health coverage have climbed 78 percent, with workers paying more than $3,200 per year.

Yep... Yappers all right!

I wonder if Nancy understands that while employment rolls may be down, the unemployment rate is flat. Perhaps people are retiring? It is the start of the baby boomer wave.

Retirees will drop your employment rolls but not add to the unemployment stats. I guess good old Nancy wants to see grandpa and grandma working until their 90!

Is that why the unemployment rate is down to 5% from 5.1% and the Dow is up?

Amazing:

By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer 9 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Employers cut far fewer jobs in April than in recent months and the unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent, a better-than-expected showing that nonetheless reveals strains in the nation's labor market.

For the fourth month in a row, the economy lost jobs, the Labor Department reported Friday. But in April the losses totaled 20,000, an improvement from the 81,000 reductions in payrolls logged in March. Job losses for both February and March turned out to be a bit deeper than previously reported.

The latest snapshot of the nationwide employment conditions — while clearly still weak — was better than many economists were anticipating. They were bracing for job cuts of 75,000 and for the unemployment rate to climb to 5.2 percent.

Hey Pelosi.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

You bitch.

The unemployment rate moved from 5.1 to 5.0 and Nancy says she's disappointed.

Can I question her patriotism?

The only thing that would make Peligro happier is for all the Military in the middle East to be killed and America to lose the entire middle East to the Islamofascist scum.

What is this woman thinking or smoking? Who the hell elected her and what were they smoking?

I’d love to see the treason and sedition laws enforced in this country.

Hey Pelosi: Study the USSR’s various Five-year plans to get their economy on track. You’ll find many useful ideas in those old documents.

Yo Nancy. You do realize that the logical cause of this has been your Democrat controlled Congress? Prior to you Democrats taking Congress we had record employment levels. Rather then whine and yap, maybe you best get off your butts in Congress and actually try DOING something for a change.

Where’s your plan to reduce gas prices that you promised Nancy? Huh?

The thing that kills me is that, while the Democrats have been in charge for the past two years, and while things have gotten progressively worse over the last wo years, the Democrats are blaming President Bush for the state of the economy.

What's worse is that McCain is trying to distance himself from Bush and he is also blaming the President. The result is that approval rates for Republicans are tanking all over the place.

Sorry b***h. What about the people that did NOT sign a ARM that was a financial time bomb? What about the folks that are fighting to save enough money to buy their FIRST house the right way? She is going to tax them to bail out the stupid ones.

Here is a thought. Let the stupid ones loose the house and help the smart ones that are saving up a reasonable down payment buy it with a mortgage they can afford.

Pretty radical, huh Nancypants?

The “bad economic performance” began with the election of the Democrats majority in 2006, and their actions, more than anything else have,

(1) helped set the stage for higher gasoline prices - ethanol mandates and more proof the U.S. will not increase domestic fossil fuel production, even in the short term;

(2)helped keep mortgage money tight - seeking to keep investors and buyers from taking the natural losses that a bubble market must take;

(3)helped move tons of dollars from equities to highly speculative commodity and commodity futures markets, raising commodity prices of every type (oil, grains, raw materials) ,for the short term - convincing investors to expect repeal of U.S. tax cuts on capital gains and dividends next year;

(4)teamed up with the media to sell depression era feelings about the economy, for their own selfish political agenda - creating the consumer psychology of lower expectations which can become a self-fulfilling call for a recession.

BLS’s best estimate is that 703,000 more real people were actually working at real jobs in April than were in March, and that 1,810,000 more were really doing so in April than in January: http://www.bizzyblog.com/

Instead of dealing with the cause, they are going to take more money from those who still have jobs, and give it to those don’t.

MORE TAXES always mean LESS JOBS.

After all , the money has to ‘come’ from somewhere (your pocket).

And, it is not going to come out of their pocket. They have huge investment shelters that keep your hand away from their stack of chips.

It’s like a lifeguard that will keep throwing inner tubes to you, which are added to your bill, but won’t pull you out of the water.

We will soon act on comprehensive housing legislation

Affirmative action with a new face. Most of these actions
are Black and minority only. I remember back in the 80's when the Gov
was pushing small business loans. So, I took my proposal to the SBA
and they actually laughed at me because I was white, and loans were for Blacks only.

I'm suprised Pelosi didn't come right out and ask America to demand what she really wants: all Conservatives mail in their bank and savings account numbers to the nearest Democrat National committee headquarters.

In return she will promise that they will take Only What They Need (or What's Fair) whichever is larger.

Pelosi Addresses the nation on the lastest Job Figures:
As you know, in 2006 we in the Democratic Party ran on a promise to change the direction our country was heading. Today we have the latest confirmation that we have kept our promises.

Leading up into 2006, the nation had endured several years of declining unemployment. As you know, when more people are employed, fewer can take advantage of government assistance. But since the Democrats took over congress, we have reversed that trend, with unemployment now up over half a point.

While this past month's figures did show an alarming drop in the percent of people who are unemployed, we promise America that this is only a temporary glitch. We will work, with or without the President's help, to get this key number back on the right track toward large-scale unemployment.
