New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed paid family leave legislation into law on Friday afternoon, making the state the third in the country with such provisions.
The legislation, which has been strongly opposed by state business groups, provides up to six weeks of paid leave for an employee to care for a newborn, newly adopted child or a seriously ill family member during any 12-month period.
In a statement released after the signing Friday, the New Jersey Business and Industry Association said the law "will force businesses to pay for temporary workers, overtime, or lost productivity in their workplaces," and "put [businesses] at a disadvantage with competitors in neighboring states that don't have this mandate."
The association said New Jersey lost 10,500 private-sector jobs in the first quarter and that the law "could not come at a worse time."

Do you think he cares?
So take your family and leave you nincompoop! Or is it ninnyhammer?
right on dude, blame the victim
I have no idea what a "ninnyhammer" is but when I see someone post this simplistic solution "pack up and move", I have to wonder if the person saying it could pack up and move so easily. Have you no property or family ties where you live? Can you leave your job or business so easily?
I have lived in blue Illinois for 40 years and I am now retired and free to move. I still have family here and property. I'm looking for suitable real estate in Missouri but haven't found it yet. No major life event is ever simple.
this a-hole governor has yet to CUT any program or any spending....corslime and all lib/dems answers to everything is tax more to give to others.....
viva ~ karl marx!!!!
Victim? Who's a victim and a victim of what?
Dog Bark Tree is a victim of the politicians in NJ.
You ain't lying there!
Well that’s not exactly true. He is planning on cutting the Agriculture Dept and closing some WMA’s/State Parks. We will grow less and have less chance to enjoy the limited outdoors here in NJ.
Whyizzit that Democrat governors and Democratic legislators like to run businesses out of their state. Here in Wisconsin we’ve gained Minnesota businesses because the Liberal Minnesota DFL party keeps increasing the tax burden on businesses in their state. And, with Gov. Doyle, the Wisconsin business climate isn’t a whole lot better.
Now I have to pay in to a system I can never even use, as our company has less than 50 employees- and these companies
are not included, but we still have to pay in roughly 0.68 per week. Cut spending? No way- this guy pushed a program to give free needles to drug users, but one woman I work with who has diabetes pays through the nose for her needles!
I was born and raised here, and it makes me sad what they’ve done to our once thriving state.
Exactly.
Women of child-bearing age will have a difficult time finding a job thanks to this touchy-feely liberal bullsqueeze. Why should I have to pay for YOUR time off?
I've been misunderstood.
I was suggesting that the dangerous character in the NJ statehouse get the hell out!
Unfortunately for Jerseyites, their entire elected entourage is NDG!
So now, child bearing age women can sue for discrimination.
Unfortunately I didn’t phrase it right. The strong suggestion was for John to pack up.
Another step on the road to complete government control and eventual takeover of all privately-owned businesses.
Otherwise known as marxism.
What is the smallest business size this affects (i.e., # of employees)?
a form of ethnic cleansing, the socialists chasing out the entrepreneurs. To me, this is a hidden blessing of the alternative minimum tax. If the taxpayers of NJ allow their politicians to run amok with programs, then their state taxes should be disounted at the federal level. Of course what the state politicians are counting on is that, as these programs proliferate at the state level, then they’ll fob them off on the federal government.
