Overkill and Short Shrift - Wright Distraction Continues
NYT ^ | May 3rd, 2008 | BOB HERBERT

Posted on 05/03/2008 10:20:41 AM PDT by The_Republican

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is no doubt (and regrettably) a big issue in the presidential campaign. But what we’ve seen over the past week is major media overkill — Jeremiah Wright all day and all night. It’s like watching the clips of a car wreck again and again.

We’ve plotted the trend lines of his relationship with Barack Obama over the past two decades. What did Obama know and when did he know it? We’ve forced Barack and Michelle Obama, two decent, hard-working, law-abiding, family-oriented Americans, to sit for humiliating television interviews, reminiscent of Bill and Hillary Clinton on “60 Minutes” at the height of the Gennifer Flowers scandal.

We’ve allowed the entire political process in what is perhaps the most important election in the U.S. since World War II to become thoroughly warped by the histrionics of a loony preacher from the South Side of Chicago.

There’s something wrong with us.

Race is like pornography in the United States — the dirty stories and dirty pictures that everyone professes to hate but no one can resist. But I suspect that even porn addicts get their fill sometimes.

The challenge for the working press right now is to see if we can force ourselves past the overwhelming temptations of Wright and race and focus in a sustained way on some other important matters, like the cratering economy, metastasizing energy costs, the dismal state of public education, the nation’s crumbling infrastructure or the damage being done to the American soul by the endless war in Iraq.

A highly decorated Army ranger named David McDowell, a 30-year-old father of two from Ramona, Calif., was killed in Afghanistan this week. As I read his obituary, I noticed that he had been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq seven times.

So, Bob Herbert considers Rev. Wright a "distraction"?

Wonder how he felt about Bush's Texas ANG records...

Let me make sure I understand this, Bob:

You have written a story on Wright, complaining that there are too many stories written about Wright?

That does not seem right, how about if you just shut up?

IOW, move on people, especially you redneck gun-toting peons.

Your car wreck is our parade, Mr. Journalist. Excuse us while we watch that loon Jeremiah Wright pontificate over and over and marvel that the emperor has no clothes.

The folks going to Iraq and Afghanistan, for the most part, are volunteering to go back. ALL of them volunteered to serve.

Maybe they know something you don't NYT. Or maybe its somethig you are loathe to admit.

The Left (Herbert) considers the Wright fiasco to be about Wright.

It is not. It’s about a candidate for President attending a church with a Reverand that espouses racist views and hatred for America for 20 years, and claims not to know or be influenced by any of its teachings.

THAT, Mr Herbert, is what it is about.

"Make it stop! Make it stop!"

Its not a disctraction at all. It is going to DEFINE Obama and who he is because he spent 20 years in a close relationship with this goon. No matter what the Lying NY Times says.

Rev Jeremiah Wright to Retire in White Suburb

Jeremiah Wright Smiled After Taking His Shots at Obama

Rev Jeremiah Wright to Retire in White Suburb

He seems to be saying, "I got mine, Barack! I have my $ 1,000,000 luxury home. Not just a cardboard McMansion, Homey. But a 10,400 square foot mansion, next to a country club and golf course in the rich Chicago suburb of Tinley Park. In the 2000 census, just two per cent of Tinley Park’s 48,400 residents were black. 93 per cent were white."

Actually, Herbert had a far different opinion when it came to Bush
This issue remains pertinent because it foreshadowed Mr. Bush's behavior as a politician and officeholder: the lack of engagement, the irresponsibility, and the casual and blatantly unfair exploitation of rank and privilege.

[It’s about a candidate for President attending a church with a Reverand that espouses racist views and hatred for America for 20 years, and claims not to know or be influenced by any of its teachings.]

It IS about that. But it's also about seeing how competently a candidate for president handles a little bit of criticism. Just examine the manner in which Senator Obama has reacted to the controversy. He first tried to blow it off as unimportant and then he said that he didn't have any idea what the Reverend was saying (even though he is on record as saying he's been a faithful member of the church for many years). Next, he claimed that he didn't agree with the Reverend's views (even though he has written about how the Reverend has been a friend, spiritual adviser and mentor) and he was finally forced to denounce him completely, but only after taking public opinion polls on what he should do.

Part of the job interview for President of the United States is to prove yourself capable of acting like a competent leader when undergoing the public scrutiny that is a campaign. Obama’s behavior regarding the Reverend Wright is scaring a lot of Democrats by demonstrating that he may simply be a typical Chicago machine politician who has been promoted beyond his experience and shoved to the forefront by the Democrat Party for reasons that have more to do with image than competence.

Ah, of course! I see it now. The non-existent Texas ANG affair "foreshadowed Bush's behavior as a politician and officeholder".

But, as Obama's "mentor", Rev. Wright's proven racist, anti-American preaching doesn't "foreshadow Obama's behavior as a politician and officeholder".

How could I be so dense?

We’ve allowed the entire political process in what is perhaps the most important election in the U.S. since World War II to become thoroughly warped by the histrionics of a loony preacher from the South Side of Chicago.

The problem, Mr. Herbert, is that one of the candidates attended the sermons of that "loony preacher" for 20 years, called that "loony preacher" a spiritual guide, and provided significant financial support for that "loony preacher".

That's a very significant issue, and I am unsurprised that it has received significant play in the last few weeks since that same "loony preacher" has been making plenty of "loony preacher" remarks in the last few weeks and the candidate in question has been publicly addressing these same remarks.

The problem is that Rev. Wright is not a distraction from the issues, Wright represents the very essence of the ideology of the issues. Very few Americans were aware of the various forms of Marxist ideology that were insinuating themselves into our society, and didn’t really understand what they had heard about post modernist thought, Liberation Theology, or Deep Ecology, and a host of other far left movements.

Rev. Wright just brought it out in a way that everyone understands. If Rev Wright is a distraction from the issues, we need to redefine the issues.

Herbert feels bad that they must sit around listening to us question Obama’s judgment in pastors. Yet he doesn’t seem to mind that they sat in the pews of Wright’s church for 20 years listening to his garbage theology!

Idiot.

Obama has shown his poor judgment in people, by associating with such low life people, then pretending not to know what they were.

reminiscent of Bill and Hillary Clinton on “60 Minutes” at the height of the Gennifer Flowers scandal.

You mean the one where the media (60 minutes) edited as much of the bad stuff and squirming as they could out of the interview, which otherwise would have shown them as clearly being liars to ANYONE that watched?
