Did Arab tribes have the cultural beliefs that Muhammad codified in Islam, or did he come up with the wacky, anti-woman stuff on his stuff? I always assumed that he just took what already existed, and made it the law of God, but he was so crazy, he may have just taken his own miscogenistic beliefs and made them into a religion.

I read a book awhile ago that I dismissed as being ignorant. The author equated Islam with a Satanic cult, complete with the worship of Ishtar (the symbol of the crescent moon) etc.

I hate to admit it, but the more I read about Islam the more correct I think the author was.
