Barack Obama's problem winning votes from working-class whites is showing no sign of going away, and their impression of him is getting worse.
Those are ominous signals as he hopes for strong performances next week in Indiana and North Carolina primaries that would derail the candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton, his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination. Those contests come as his candidacy has been rocked by renewed attention to his volatile former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and by his defeat in last month's Pennsylvania primary.
In an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll in April, 53 percent of whites who have not completed college viewed Obama unfavorably, up a dozen percentage points from November. During that period, the numbers viewing Clinton and Republican candidate John McCain negatively have stayed about even.
The April poll — conducted before the Pennsylvania contest — also showed an overwhelming preference for Clinton over Obama among working-class whites. They favored her over him by 39 percentage points, compared to a 10-point Obama lead among white college graduates. Obama also did worse than Clinton among those less-educated voters when matched up against Republican candidate John McCain.
"It's the stuff about his preacher ... and the thing he said about Pennsylvania towns, how they turn to religion," Keith Wolfe, 41, a supermarket food stocker from Parkville, Md., said in a follow-up interview. "I don't think he'd be a really good leader."
Just before the Pennsylvania primary, Obama said many small-town residents are bitter about their lives and turn for solace to religion and guns.
Recent voting patterns underscore Obama's continued poor performance with these voters, who are often pivotal in general election swing states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Just like Richard Nixon said about Poppy Bush, that he was basically worthless, but he had IOU's and resume franks and chits from all over the place, and you had to do something with him -- so Nixon appointed him to stuff, just to get him the hell out from underfoot.

I don't think anyone gets it. Hillary has shot her wad,made Obama look like a Black Panther in a business suit and exposed him as being UNELECTABLE. Her campaign is probably spreading the rumors hot and heavy that he is a MUSLIM. In the meantime she dons the pink pantsuit and goes on O'Reilly of all places and he proceeds to kneel down and kiss her Big Pink Butt. Doesn't old Hillary look so moderate these days.

Hillary fits all of the Obama characteristics you mentioned except she is white.
So my question is:If these white working class voters truly want a patriotic,Christian Second Amendment protecting candidate,then why are they not CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS and voting along those lines?
My answer is that they want the free goodies just like the blacks do.They just feel more confortable when a white socialist gives then out than a snooty black lawyer from Hawaii.

More to the point, they feel that a black Democrat is going to exclusively look after blacks, and working class whites will pay the price
I was thinking about this the other day, the ironic thing is that in the end, the first black POTUS will more than likely be a reasonably conservative republican, not a democrat. I'm thinking that most Americans have gotten beyond the black issue, with character the primary issue. Just think about all the black politicians on the democrat side - baggage challenged, every single one. Joe Biden actually had it right - BO seemed so clean, etc. (I'll add, for a black democrat), but no one at that point had looked through his stuff.
With that said, signing up for 4 years of BO, given his to date revealed baggage is too much to ask of most voting Americans - he's actually a scary person at this point.
Of course, the Cool thing is that through all the new news sources, we are exposed to all the 'stuff' about candidates that is some how exposed by some great people, unlike the old days. Sorting through BO's baggage, along with the Hillary contest has been one of the most entertaining dramas of this young century.
As an aside, the 'Pastor' issue settled my question relating to why so many black churches were not more influential in the black community - turns out, more than a few, preach hate.

Not hogwash really. The people who thought Obama charismatic and who were fainting were not the people that are turning away from Obama. He’s still got the over-educated white vote. This article was about him losing support among working class whites. There are many reasons why they are not buying Obama. Mostly the fact that they don’t feel any kinship with Obama. I suspect one reason is that they are fed up with affirmative action and see Obama as an affirmative action candidate.

Read the article. Read the polls. The more educated the white democrat voter, the more likely that voter supports Obama. Obama supporters are typically black or college educated white. He usually does quite well in black neighborhoods or college towns. In fact, the reasons he’s been favored in NC is it’s high percentage of blacks and it’s high percentage of up-scale and more educated whites.
Clinton’s are typically older women or non-college educated working class.

The reason I ask is that I am degreed, and have post-graduate credentials, as do most of the people with whom I work. And, I’ll tell you, even though we work in Chicago, most of us are vehemently opposed to Obama.

Understood. I was commenting on the polling that has been done. Polling only reports tendencies. I’m sure there are PhDs that support Clinton but it is more likely that a PhD would support Obama. While this is just basic probability and statistics it does explain why Obama is favored in NC and Clinton in IN. It’s the demographics. The more urban, the more up-scale, the more black, the more support for Obama.
When I mentioned ‘over-educated whites’, I was really referring to the tendency for locations with major colleges to go overwhelmingly for Obama. While I haven’t seen the numbers, I suspect that college professors are much more likely to support Obama than Clinton.
